Thinking of purchasing this camera before i go to London next month to catch some quality images of the city.

Any opinions on this camera would be very much appreciated before i blow 570+ quid.

Thanks. :)

My 400D is awesome. The 500D is step up. So it should be even better.

I wanted the 400D off a mate when he was selling 1 in really good nick second hand but someone got there before me.
He has now upgraded to a 450D but for the sake of £50 to get a 500D i mite aswell just do that.
HD recording aswell :)

prefer the nikon d60, thats what we have, or ask ade what he uses.

NovaLad

The Nikon seems to be much more expensive.
I'm not looking to spend anymore than what the 500D is at.

Also has anyone got a spare camera bag going cheap or for free if i get it :) lol

true but you pays your money mate. its also extremely easy to use and a far more quality product.

NovaLad

I get what you mean but i'm not in a situation at the moment to be paying more than what the 500D is asking.

Tis a shame but you got to make do with what you can afford and not skint yourself sometimes lol

I was about to call bull**** on that, but I guess you're referring to the D90's metal body over the XXXD's plastic one?

Novalad, how big are your hands?

If they're not tiny then get a used 40D instead, and use the change to spend on lenses. Ade and I are 40D users, my better half uses a 400D because it fits her hands better, but I find it limiting. The XXD's have metal chassis whereas the XXXDs are plastic - drop an XXXD onto a hard surface and its knackered. Also the XXDs have the big jog wheel on the back, and more controls at the top - its much easier to use these than to have to use the screen and menus of the XXXDs all of the time.

I see buying a new, entry level camera body as a waste of money - they don't hold their value like the others, in fact they pretty much halve in value as soon as you've bought them. You could spend £200ish on a used 400D and some of the change on an ultrawide lens to do things like this (http://i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp133/micallef1990/zetec%20s%20halfords%2050mm%20and%2010-20mm/IMG_2589.jpg), and this (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4142/4814084430_2500cc2346_b.jpg), and this (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4099/4813464070_48fe407ccc_b.jpg).

For the most part, what you can do with a DSLR is limited by the lens(es) that you're using, and most people forget this.

450d here, no problem with it.

DSLR's do seem to have spiked in price (new) recently though.

Dan, can you link me to your wide lens please?

I paid £400 for my 450d starter kit when they had been released for less than a month so the price for the 500d seems a lot?

Also i got erm, slightly large hands and dont struggle at all with the 450.

All of my wide stuff is done with a Sigma 18-50mm F/3.5-5.6 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sigma-18-50mm-3-5-5-6-Digital-Cameras/dp/B002EDNAIK), it cost me about £80 brand new at the time.

The ultrawide pics I linked arent mine because I don't own an ultrawide yet:cry: . They were taken with the Canon 10-22mm and the Sigma 10-20mm and the photos were stolen from here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=312255) and here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=143064).

I used to think that the size of the 400/450D was fine too, until I handled one of the larger bodies. I'll take some pics later of each one in my pig-tit fingers lol.

Prices for new gear shot up massively when the exchange rates changed as the recession started a year or two ago.

Ditto, now is not a great time to buy a brand new DSLR. Was looking for my dad a few months back; I bought my 450d brand new a couple years ago for £350ish (inc £50 canon cashback), now its selling for around £480? lol

aye we paid £300 for our d60, that was 12 months ago. now the equivalent is around £100 more. cracking camera, just about to buy a 75-300 (i think) lens.

Sigma 18 to 70 dc macro. To replace my Canon 18-55mm kit lens.

Really like the Sigma lenses. My 700 to 300 zoom is too.

Welsh Dan
26-07-10, 10:43 PM
Is that the f/2.8 one? I'm a fan of Sigma stuff too. My father in law has the Sigma 110-300 f/2.8 and its an awesome lens.

I have nowhere to put my ring finger or little finger on the 400D, it seems normal going from a compact to a camera of that size, but not after you've handled a larger body :).

If you have problems handholding the Sigma 70-300, have a play with the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS. Its a much easier lens to use.

See this always happens with lens talk, i just about think i have sussed out what i want then someone else mentions something else.

I like to think i can use my camera very well but would like to get some new lens's, get confused and just dont bother.

Just out of curiosity whats the price difference for a sigma and canon like for like mega wide lens?

Just a note i have the standard canon 18-55mm and a canon ultrasonic ef100-300 at the moment.

Welsh Dan
27-07-10, 12:33 PM
The Sigma can be picked up new for around £450, the Canon is nearer £650 from the UK or £550 from Hong Kong.

I'd love an ultrawide lens, but that £80 sigma I have will fit the full frame cameras aswell. A 10mm lens on a camera like mine or yours with a 1.6x crop works out to have the same field of view as a 16mm lens on a full frame camera like the 5d. You can pick up a used 5d mk1 for the same sort of money as the Canon 10-22mm lens. When I get that money, thats my dilemma lol.

Ben
27-07-10, 01:01 PM
Well funnily enough i am going to Hong Kong in December, i might buy the cheap sigma to get used to it and then have a hunt round the markets out there.

Based on using my old mans D70 then D80, I hate the fecking things. NOT intuative to use and irritating.

ollllllly's dx (cant remember what it is) seems a hell of a lot easier to use than the pikey amatur range of nikons.

I took a punt on the Sony A100 a few years back, ok its a bit boggo but its easier to use than the equiv nikon of the time etc. Plus I'm a tard when it coems to photos lol

Another vote for the 40D here. I went from a 1000D to a 40D and I've never looked back, the 40D has enough quality/features to outshine my talent for a long time. I definately prefer the larger size of the 40D (mine is even bigger than Dan's in the pics as it has the battery grip fitted). It does get pretty tiring on the wrist with the 70-200 2.8 and 1.4ext fitted though
Plus you are definately better off investing in top quality lenses. Second hand lenses hold their value very well as long as you look after them :)

Its just my stedyness is all, when i use my 400D i sit my ring and little finger under the camera (on the base)

Cant believe the size difference. I have a battrey grip now so it feels bigger.

yu cant compare the 40d to the 450d - the 40d is far superior in build quality and general perfoemance.

I use a canon 40d for work and a canon 7d - both due the the frames per second - both with Canon L glass lenses and the quality is stunning especially as most of my work is indoors in low light at speed.

The Canon 500d is a good entry leven DLSR and prices have dropped in recent months but its still lots of cash for what it actually is.

Personally I'd take a peek on ebay and get a second hand 40D or 450D. Both have good screen resolution and are solid and reliable with lots of firmware updates to remove annoying post development bugs. Once you get a second hand camera just insure it with Domestic and General - costs about £10 a month depending on the make and it covers EVERYTHING. Well worth it.

Lens wise the old saying is the body is nothing unless you have a good lens and it rings true for any DLSR. If all your doing is wanting to dabble with slr's then the Canon range is superb for lenses. Tamron, Sigma and Canon make lenses (Canons can be expensive though) but again ebay comes to the rescue.

Do your research though - this is a great site for information -

www.fredmiranda.com

Its a massive site reviewing Canon, Nikon and a host of other manufacturers with lenses, bodies and other equipment.

TBH the make of camera you go for is like buying a car - you're either a Canon or Nikon person. Both are very similar in performance functionality at the entry level and it's just a case of make a choice within your budget.

Oh and if youve not got it already get photoshop or elements 8 because you'll be forever tinkering once youve processed your images.

Hope this helps...

Ade

Ok guys need some advice on amazon...

Is it a con or is it really that cheap to buy stuff on there? lol

Comet wanted £579 for the 500d with the lens and £30 cash back but you get nothing else with that other than the usual strap and charger.

Oh and an extra £90 for 3 years warranty.

Amazon on the other hand...
500D camera, lens, 4gb extreme SD card, Cam bag, 3 years warranty, card slot stick. all for £555???

Is there a mistake there? :S

I don't see anything about the camera bag, card and reader for £555 though. Just buy the camera for £506.98 on that link, then get a cheapo branded 4Gb mem card and bag elsewhere (or elsewhere on Amazon).

Don't bother with a card reader for a PC, its really not worth it. In fact its more of a fag to use one, as the camera software does a much better job of copying and organizing all your pics.

Probably not all of them. I'd ignore the zooms - zooms have come on massively since then, but the primes will be worth trying. Do some reading before you stick the lenses on your new camera though - the last thing you wanna do is smash the mirror!

Jeeesus, kids these days. I remember doing B&W dev with the curtains closed and a thick duvet to keep the light out lol

I've got a Canon AE-1 and my dad has an AV-1 (or it might be the other way round... lol). I still rate them favourably against digital. Its odd, I also find shooting with a 35mm SLR to be easier than a digital; the whole thing about "oh you can't see the pic until you've developed the film" is nonsense, if you've got a good eye and know how to use the camera you know how the pic will come out.

My dad also has a large format film camera, that takes great quality pics.

Too true on citilink!

I had an item delivered from Taunton. Citilink came to my house when nobody was home, put a card through the door. So I rings the number on the card. Woman on the end of the phone says they can only redeliver the item between 9am and 5pm and can't guarantee what time it will arrive within those hours. Or I could pick up from the "local" depot in Bristol.

Fcuking idiots. It would have been easier for me to pick the item up from the seller myself in the first place rather than travel almost 3x as far to get to their depot!
