That's what f1 was all about for me, none if this crap like today!

Because I'm an old man, I can remember all the early 80's F1. Miles better than now.

Even Diaz and Cruise were entertaining. Best Topgear in a longtime.

Captain Slow FTW.

i can only echo what the other 2 old farts have said, anyone that has never seen the older stuff really should make the effort, totally different animal in racing sense even if only for the pure skill and nerves of steel to achieve what they did compared to the new breed :thumb:

exactly my thoughts, until tonight i dont think i had ever seen any footage of senna doing what he did very well, the part where he got out of his car to go and check on the driver that had crashed in front of him, i cant even imagine any of todays drivers doing the same

It shows how quick F1 cars were when a current F1 driver has a smile on face.

A true racer - a legend and in my eyes hard to beat, 50 this year was a surprise.

What a driver...I would rather watch older F1 than the new seasons. Todays drivers arent anywhere near senna. He is a true legend and sadly missed.

ive said it time and time again senna is the greatest driver ever to grace f1 imo

i remember him wrestling a crap mclaren against mansell in the williams which was by far the better car and senna regularly coming out best, at one qualifying sesion he realised his car was too slow to get pole in a normal way but the timing line was just out of the final chicane (think it was france not sure as i was only young) and instead of settling for 3rd behind the 2 williams he banzied the final chicane in qualifying spinning across the line due to the totaly ridiculas speed he went in at and taking pole, now that is real balls in cars with no real aids and alot more dangerous, a real shame he died with so much left infront of him.

i missed top gear will i player it after moto gp

and cant wait to go see the documentary film thats coming out about his life.

senna was my hero as a kid

So impressed with the speeds and way he drove with one hand. Didn't know they where manuals.

Not an F1 fan, but the footage was amazing.

tonights Topgear was pretty awesome tbh. i've never been a real fan of F1, but that footage was astonishing. i've never seen anyone handle a car like that in my life.
and i would never believe any driver would get out of their car in the middle of a race to help another crashed driver...

At least now some people who regularly say Brundle was an 'Average' driver can understand the sort of machinery the drivers of that era were racing.

Senna's death lead to the gradual taming of F1 which in a safety aspect is a good thing, but safety also removes some of the wildness, and much like the group B cull in rallying and the death of the supertourers, has left us with pretty watered down motorsport which is a shame.

I can admit I actually had a tear in my eye at the end of that film, a very fitting tribute IMO.

Also a good way to show the younger generation that Shumacher wasn't the first to show complete aggression in a championship deciding race lol

I glad I saw senna racing when I was younger, he also saw his nephew as a future talent and I hope Bruno can bring the senna name back to the top step of the podium,

Also 2 point about his car
1: that turbo looked fooking huge!!!!
2: 1 man to start it, unlike when Hammond drove alonso's renault F1 car it took an army to start and run it,

Next weekend don't watch the grand prix, try and find a DVD of a mid 80's race instead.

I think the reason why I hate F1 so much now is because I grew up watching racing akin to the ilk of Senna on a Sunday afternoon. They weren't scared to dive into a corner to try and push someone else out. The cars really did need a very high standard of driver skill to control, especially when you see how skittish they were. Now its all downforce and computers and auto boxes and blah.

and i would never believe any driver would get out of their car in the middle of a race to help another crashed driver...
You never watched WRC then? That used to happen all the time.

The thing that does grate me however, is even just watching those clips that TG showed, you can see that if Senna was racing today, he'd be labelled as too aggressive or arrogant. Purposefully driving into another car to take both out at the first corner so that he won the championship? Shooting up the inside of another car just as it takes the line through a corner, forcing it to run wide? Even Martin Brundle said he used to do it on purpose to push the other driver out the way. If that was anyone today, they'd get black flagged for it, yet because Senna did it he was a "genius".

I think his death marked the end of F1 as a tough wheel-to-wheel racing sport.

I've never been a fan of F1 or known a lot about Senna and that era of racing, I do have it recorded on my Sky+ and looking forward to watching it, after the good things people have said about him

the film by all accounts is awsome detailing sennas life bruno says the family are very happy with the upcoming film and that its a true reflection and fitting tribute the directors have also managed to make it with senna narating using previous interviews i think that will be a little spooky but will definatly be going the cinema to watch already got the browny points by watching twilight so heather has been warned were off to see it lol

As I said on FB, while Senna aws a legend, ALL of the drivers from that era were heros compared to the post 2000 lot.

I mean drifting the car round bends and sitting up eachothers asses finding that moment to pass.... EPIC!!!

Just watched TG. An awesome episode I agree.

Brilliant tribute to the F1 great that was Ayrton Senna. Some excellent footage, and they showed him in a very good light. Nice to see one of todays best drivers being so open about how 'easy' and safe it is now in comparison too.

I also remember where I was the day he died. Those were the years I would never miss an F1 race!

Cameron Diaz also. :d :thumb:

Has been a good weekend for retro F1. There was a piece on Jim Clark on the build up to the qualifying which was really good too, despite it being presented by Jake "lanky streak no talent" Humphreys

Agreed with everything said in this thread. I have been a big fan of F1 since 94/95 but sadly was too young to remember the late 80s and senna's death. I also agree that his death changed the sport and had to be made safer, is a shame but i guess it's better than seeing your heroes die each week. Also i agree that the cars arnt as fun to watch this past decade but i think this season has been one of the best for many years and has so much going on so all is not lost.

Has anybody got a link or even a youtube video to a long tribute to senna? I've always seen 5 minute ones but wouldnt mind watching a full program about his life tbh.

AS much as I loathe bikes, the motogp gents seem to manage doing similar speeds to F1 while much more exposed and they arent dying week in week out.

An element of danger would make you a better driver instantly lol

how about retro f1 racing, like the "top hat groovy baby" touring car series?
now i'd pay to see that.

i remember exactly where i was when senna crashed.... my landlord/neighbour came rushing into my house cos his missus had the telly on something else, and he'd heard it on the radio. we sat there watching them slowly get him out & put him into a helicopter... everyone was shocked. to a lot of us, senna wasn't necessary our favourite driver, but we all respected him & his skills.. the men from those days were the last of the bravest..... mansell, prost, piquet & berger would wring superhuman performances out of those beasts, week in, week out. the cars were still drawn by hand, and the aero stuff was so basic, but that gave them such beauty. the new stuff is way faster, but not nicer.

anyone who saw the 1st lap of the 1993 donington grandprix will never forget what senna could do that nobody else could.

small side note.. the car he died in was an absolute dog. the benetton was way faster. schumi really believed he had killed senna by forcing him to push the williams beyond what it was capable of to keep ahead of his own car...

Bikes arn't strictly that much more dangerous than cars though to be fair. Cornering speeds are way lower, which is normally where accidents tend to happen, and also most of the time they get spat off onto the tarmac instead of being burned to death in a fiberglass coffin.

before i get slated I'm not saying its 'safe' of course lol, just its not as dangerous as some might think.

if i could find the whole race, i'd post a linky for it. the rider who fell off, stoner, was still so far ahead of the pack that he finished second by about 15seconds. it was the best bit of gladiatorial racing ever televised. it was a case of whoever was going to lose the battle.....

they were going over the top of the hill & on to the corkscrew on one wheel. then rossi was on the inside of the kerbs.
