View Full Version : Engines engines ohh the choice...
Currently I'm in the middle of a project nova which is going to be my main car used for work, getting to shows, meets and throwing round country lanes ;)
I've been looking at different engines for the project that are lighter than a 2.0l xe but still have enough potential tunability to keep up with one.
I like the idea of small engines with big power cas its more funn when u beat something bigger, The only problem is I'm stuck on which engine to go for.
So far i have though of:
1400 16v -
1600 16v -
1600 8v -
1400 8v -
1300 8v -
What I think I'm going for is a 1600 8v from a Gsi with webber 40's replacing the injection system, head work and 285 cam with a few other bits and bobs, after talking to various people, this set up works pretty well and wont cost the earth to complete.
I could go for a 1600 16v and do the same which according to zelos has a potential 210 bhp. . . Arrggg I cant decide
Any help or suggestions will be wicked lol
Cheers

Keep it simple.
Always have a better handling/braking car than having too much power.
But, I'd go for the 1.6SXi mk2 Astra engine...It's a real beauty!

Get a 1.6 16V  My mate has one in his nova and he only don a couple of mods and it is quick.

for the ultimate go for the 1.6 16v route
but personally im stickin to the more traditional 8v
i have plans
i like the 8v's cas there simple plus im pretty new to the whole engine mod's etc so i want to keep it simple.
I've already got a 1400 8v but i'm unsure on what they can produce.
For what i'd be best sticking with my 1.4 8v

What about a 1300 16v susuki swift GTi engine. Seem to produce very good power, and are still a rarety.

if you've not got something sensible to say dont say anything!!
i would probably go for the 1600 16v with throttle boddies
have a look at
http://www.novaload.net/features/viewfeature.php?ref=56
this is would be v.expensive though compared to the others even with carbs because it might be difficult to convert to dizzy ignition and you would need a mappable ecu for the ignition as well. i have seen some of the 16v on carbs but i'm not sure how it was done, or the spec. also if you wanted to keep the injection to save problems, it wont cos changing the cams will cause a problem and again you will need to get a mappable ecu, thats what total vauxhall say anyway, they did a 1400/1600 16v tuning guide a few months ago.
if you don't want to spend loads go with the 1.6 8v.

WTF youv'e obviosly not seen much autograss racing.
the suzuki engines are more common than you would think
does anyone have anymore details about dropping one of these in a nova.
e.g. engine mounts, wiring, gearbox, driveshafts? hubs? what needs changing

sorry but i wouldn't put a non vauxhall engine in a nova, thats just the way i am, and i suspect that most nova owners would feel the same.
maybe we should start a poll and see what other people think.
a mate of mine reconed the 1.8 8v are suposed 2 best 4 power 2 weight ratio dunno how true but worth considerin i recon

umm a 1.8 8v will weight exactly the same as a 2.0 8v its the same block etc
both those lumps aint really as good as a 16v so i'd guess either the 1.6 16v or 2.0 16v are the best power to weight as standard

i would go for a 16v motor. harder to work on than the 8v's but a far superior, more modern engine.
