You think it's bad now? Today's cars are faster than the group B cars, wait till 2012 if the rule changes go ahead then you'll want today's cars back.

WRC is fairly boring tbh, and if they make it worse next year then its got to spell the end for it. imo they should never have banned group B, i cant even begin to comprehend what group B would be like today if it were still about, other that totally insane. motorsport used to be for manly men, and the thought of health and safety would have been laughable, now its just an empty husk of its former self, taken over and mollycoddled by the nanny state/planet.

This is a kindof my old attitude.

But then, is it really worth every stage, risking you life for a plastic trophy?

Seems the people watching can say "faster faster faster" when they would be reduced to tears if sat in a propper stage car.

It was banned for good reason, and now, with modern technology the cars as faster then they were in group b;)

Might be faster but there not half as much fun

the trouble is,the cars these days dont have any character or reputation like the cars of old

I wouldn't say the cars are boring but the drivers are, the only 2 drivers with a character is petter and hening

Loeb also IMO. WRC is sh!te though.

Are we really sure the current spec WRC cars are quicker than the Group B monsters? I have my doubts! Especially as the RS200 Evo could manage 0-60mph in like 2.3 secs in the wet/gravel IIRC.

1. group B cars were very fast tractors that looked vaguely like cars. they were also death traps.
2. wrc cars are fast & exciting...... maybe not on the telly, but they are
3. the new generation wrc cars are 1600 turbo, they will also be very fast.
4. its the rallies that are crap, not the cars. the old RAC was a national event with stages all through the land, taking 5 days... the modern wrc events are in one tiny area with doubled up stages....

Doesn't answer my question or tell me anything new though. lol

The best forms of motorsport (IMO) come from that based very losely on production cars.

The last impreza before the hatchback thing was put up against an audi quattro time on a stage and beat it easily, they're slower in a straight line but the control they have now and cornering ability just outdoes group B by a mile.

so a MK2 ESCORT & a groupA imprezza(mcrae) or evo(makinen), which are still very closely based on production cars don't fit your idea of the best of rallying????

1993 btcc was still very production based & an absolutely stunning year of motorsport, none of this reversed grid cobblers, no stupid bodykits, or flared arches.

I remember 1993 BTCC very well, but it wasn't the best years. I also agree the reverse grid tombola crap is a joke. Nowt wrong with the aero additions and millions of £'s in R&D though.

You're right, those rally cars don't stand out as the 'best' for me. I liked the mental days of crazy budgets and building things to go as fast as they can, like the Super Tourers.

I also understand why it all had to end (different reasons per sport) but IMO those were the finest days.

I personally thought the epic battles between Rikard Rydell and Alain Menu were some of the best BTCC days.Wait....this is a Vauxhall forum lol So inevetibly it will be John Cleland in that "donor" lol

if you want crazy looking cars, go & look at rallycross, or a decent national rally series.. you get all sorts, maybe the british hill rally championship is worth a look, they are all home built 4x4 specials with massive engines

I also have no intrest in wrc as such, however there is loads of lower level rallying that is much more fun to watch! I went up to the wyedean rally and they had some fairly impressive cars up there including some gp:b stuff like 6r4's etc!! You can get right up close just like the old days! There are also the slower stuff but its all good and well. There was a newly rebuilt mk2 escort which i had a nose around before it went out running a high speck c20xe, he managed to right it off completly in his first outing....luckly he and the co driver walked away but the mental driving IS still around in rallying today!!

^ Yeah, but it's a shame that the best we have to offer these days is not marketed as such. The FIA would have you believe that the WRC is the be all and end all, when as you rightly say there is so much more going on with ex-works cars in lower level competition.

I do like Rallycross Mowgli. The amount of SWB Quattros, 6R4's and RS200's that have been crushed coming off the line is criminal though lol. That sport has always amazed me with how much money/R&D are in the cars yet the prizes are surely relatively low?

Seeing as we are on a VX forum:

Now that was a good battle. lol (1993 right Mowgli?)

soper was sent out to make sure cleland didn't win the championship, and he succeeded. murray walker nearly exploded while commentating (live) on it. i also believe it was the last race with in car microphones & live broadcasts...after cleland got hit......

theres something else, commentators these days are just so boring,Murray Walker spieled a load of sh1t half the time but then would interrupt himself when summat happened to someone.he made the races more exciting, especially F1-Now that sad boring nob Brundle does it,and who is that other dullard??

That Adam from the BT adverts lookin mother fcuker on the F1 reminds me of some random office w4nker lol. Always looks out of place IMO.

Agreed on Murray addign some spice, no matter how annoying.

I need to watch the Soper Vs. Cleland battle again. One finger salute = Murray saying 'I'm going for first place' LOL

the other bloke was on radio 5 live, so getting all the info across & lots more because you can't actually see it, is his thing. but it doesn't work on telly.. the radio 5 team now are actually quite good.

but at least the racing got way better this year. its odd that the fuel stops were added to in 1994? to spice up the racing... but their removal has made it so much better. I don't think schumi would have been so dominant if he's raced all those years on crappy tyres & full tanks..
