Hi guys. I been hanging round here for a little while now. Pestering everyone with (mostly) stupid questions. So I thought it was about time I started a project thread to show what I've got myself into :thumb:

I bought the car from a place near Birmingham (found it on piston heads) as a stolen recovered. Didn't look too bad in the add.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0021.png

So I borrowed a trailer (thanks Bouch) and off I went to pick it up. Didn't get any photos of the journey but her it is at it's new home.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_00352.jpg

Started stripping it and got a little depressed to say the least :(
Is it asking for too much to find a Nova with no rust for £125? Don't think I'm being unreasonable lol
Anyway. Here's what I found.

Seen worse battery trays though

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0085.jpg

Took a trip to my local Vaux delear to see what panels they had. Only a door skin (which I needed seen as the door lock looked like it was removed with a shotgun.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0088.jpg

And a complete front end.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0089.jpg

And some more pics of it nearly stripped

Well. Can't get to sleep yet so I thought I'd add a little more. While going around the car I noticed the previous owner repaired the lower corner with a piece of tin and a ball pein hammer

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0616.jpg

So as you can see I had a grind around and decided to but this

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0617.jpg

I'm not much good with a welder but I got a mate who knows what he's doing so I'll leave that up to him (when I can nail him down).

I also started to clean the seam sealer out the engine bay ready for him to stitch weld

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0615.jpg

Not the best picture I know. I'll get a better one next time I go out.

I've ordered 2 new sills which should be here by Tuesday. I had ordered two front wings also. This one turned up

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0618.jpg

But I was told by the supplier they cannot get a driver side for me
This is very annoying as I need it to line up the front end for welding.

While I am waiting on new panels (and trying to nail down my welder friend) I decided to find all my old E16se parts which were scattered around all my family members garages from when I moved house a few years ago.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0040.jpg

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0045.jpg

And proceeded to clean it all up and rebuild it with new tappets as one of the old ones came out in 3 parts when i tried to remove it :tard:

Small update.
Finished stripping the seam sealer in the bay today

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0621.jpg

Looks like this will need some attention:roll:

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0622.jpg

thank you Mr postman

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0620.jpg

Hopefully get the bay ready for these some time this week.
I cut this rusty bit off today, and was wondering, do I need to replace it?

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0623.jpg

As it's not structural?
then i could do the same here

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0624.jpg

Also started blasting the areas for stitch welding

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0619.jpg

But decided not to do any more till I get a face sheild of some sorts as my goggles didn't protect my cheeks at all lol

I'm also gonna blast my rear axle and hopefully get it powder coated too

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0626.jpg

That's it for today.

I've decided to go for a C20Let engine when it's done and I've seen the conversion kits on the bay. But are they any good?
Don't want to post the link incase I get in trouble!

I wont buy the engine till the cars finished but I want to make sure I get everything ready before it goes for paint :thumb:

untill water gets in there and rot's the back chassis leg from the inside out, they your up **** creek without a paddle

Patch it up using abit of an old wing or doorskin dude, will prevent any water getting in there in the long run :thumb:

shrtwrec20
09-07-10, 10:44 AM
Well seen as that chassis leg has holes all the way across the underside as standard I don't think water getting in the end will make much difference.

Hope you lot are having a good time at Billing. Seen as I can't be there I'm gonna do a bit on the car today (it's the last day of my holiday so this will be it for a while) and I'll post my progress later.

Unfortunately no mate. It Pi55ed down here today and my workshop roof decided it was gonna start leaking right above the car. And as there is no suspension, wheels etc i could do nothing but cover it over and wait. I started cleaning up my wheels in the garage. They're heavily curbed so i'm gonna give em a fill and paint.

Here's one
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0629.jpg

I know they're probably not to everyones taste but they came off the first Nova I ever owned, and I love em. Gonna take them all into work next week and sand blast them first.

Unfortunatley the wife is going out with friends for the day tomorrow so i'll be looking after the terrors all day and wont get a chance to do any work. Hopefully Sunday if it's dry I can get the roof sorted and do a bit then.
Monday will be my first day back at work in two and a half weeks so afetr that I'll only get maybe one day a week I can do any work :(

mk1nova_rich
09-07-10, 10:32 PM
shame about the roof :( and them wheels arnt too bad. Cant say they are to my taste but cheaper than getting some new wheels, especially if you have access to sandblaster for refurbing :thumb:

Right. Only a small update today. After fixing my leaky roof I grabbed my trusty scraper and wire brush and went hunting for more rusty bits, and boy did I find some lol

And can anyone tell me what the hell this is for?
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0641.jpg

As if it's not needed i'm gonna plate it up.

I had to remove my under carpet foam type stuff as where the leak had been dripping on it there was new life starting to form :tard:
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0634.jpg

Yep. It's a mushroom!

Then I decided to turn my attention to the sh!t tip that my workspace had become and spent most the day sweeping up and having a general clearout of the area so I could work around the car a bit easier.
I also cleaned the engine bay with a scotch bright pad just so it didn't look too sorry for itself
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0633.jpg

Then I thought I'd use the rest of my time putting up some lights so when the dark nights start to roll in, I'll still be able to do some work when I get home in the evenings.

I knocked up some brackets. (they're not pretty but they do the job)
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0643.jpg

and after a lot of running cable, playing with fiddley conectors, trying to get cable to go through the garage wall without getting lost in the cavity, and ofcourse a lot of swearing. They were working
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0644.jpg

I knew that I did that electrical NVQ all them years ago for something lol

Anyhows. That's it for now guys. Hopefully I'll be able to get hold of my welder mate some time this week and get on with some real work. I need to fit my strengthening kit, stitch weld the bay, fit two new sills (which I have but didn't get photos) and fit the front end (but first I need to get a driver side wing which I can't find anywhere).

Thanks for reading. Hopefully next week I'll have more to report, but then again, with me going back to work this week I wouldn't hold your breath

Hi guys. Not had much time for this lately as I've been stuck on night shift and by the time I get home in the morning I'm too tired. Anyway, won a c20let on eBay yesterday. Here's a pic off the listing

Hi guys. Small update.
I arrived home yesterday and was met by a courier (only a week late).
Here's what he had for me
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_06432.jpg

opened up

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0646.jpg

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_06442.jpg

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/IMG_0645.jpg

It's had:
New sump
New oil pump
New timing belt, tensioners, pulleys and water pump
Freshly reground crank (+0.25mm) with brand new shells and bearings, oil seals and rtv red on output side.
New sump gasket with magnetic sump plug.
Block shott blasted back and hand painted black
Coscast head shott blasted and handpainted silver.
Valve stem oil seals replaced along with bronze guides.
Valves were polished and re-ground.
All new nuts and bolts for rocker, sump etc.
Group A , 4 leaf head gasket.
XE cam fitted to inlet side and timed to suit.
Polished chrome dipstick pipe.
Polished chrome water rail.
Genuine vauxhall cool running thermostat.
Braided water pipes for the turbo.
Hybrid turbo rebuild using k24/k16 mix.
Uprated actuator.
Custom, made to order 10mm HT leads in blue.
A full mixture of samco and roose silicone pipes.
Brand new intercooler with custom pipes and silicone joints.
Custom loom, simplified to run the essentials. Mated to motronic ecu with eds phase 3 chip.
Aluminium crank pulley.
Brand new twin piston BOV
Injectors were cleaned via ultra sound.

I've also been supplied with a staggered step racing oil seal for the turbo which I will need to fit.

Unfortunatley we had a few problems in work so I was called back in and didn't get home till 7.00 this morning so I been way too tired to do anything today.
Tomorrow I'm hoping to get my old E16se off the engine stand and put this in it's place so I can have a good look at it.
Finish the sand blasting in the engine bay, and drill out all the spot welds ready to fit the new sills.
My mate who is doing my welding has been really busy lately so progress has slowed right down. I might of found someone else who can help me but I'll have to see how that pans out. Might even have a go myself in the engine bay. :tard:

Anyway next on my list of parts to buy are some solid engine mounts. An F28 box as this engine came with an F20
Shafts,
Hubs,
and all the conversion mounts I will need.
Unfortuneatly I have no idea where to get this stuff.
I've seen these on the bay but I'm not sure if they would be any good?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230302373603&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230302373603&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT)
Opinions please?

Also a friend of mine came round today in his XE nova. He said he didn't need to lower his driver side engine mount as the mount kit he bought accounted for the height difference. But the bugger can't remember where he got it. Anyone got an idea?

Thanks guys

As if it's not needed i'm gonna plate it up.

If youre referring to the hole in the picture that is your drain hole for tha battery tray, dont plate it over as you will have a swimming pool under there when it rains!

And if you mean the other bit on the inner side of the splash guard that is where the bottom of the aerial mounts onto the splash guard, its been snapped off and put back in upside down, but can be removed and plated should you wish, although if its not rotted around there id leave as you wont see it and plastic is lighter than metal lol

shrtwrec20
01-08-10, 02:38 PM
Thanks spudley. I did mean the aerial bit. It doesn't look too healthy so probably will cover it up. Gonna have a bee sting on the roof anyway.

And as far as any progress I was hoping to make today, that has gone out the window as was called to work again early hours this morn and it looks like I'll be here till tomorrow :(
oh well. More overtime means more pennies for parts I guess lol

Not the sort of update I wanted to make :(
Got a chnce yesterday to look at the engine after work as I finally finished on time for the first time in over a month.
Turns out the turbo is knackered. I felt some play in the impeller. When I looked into the air intake side I could see the compressor wheel was damaged and the nut which should hold it on was missing
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/Problems/IMG_0650.jpg
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/Problems/IMG_0651.jpg

and when I turn or move the turbine shaft the compressor side doesn't move, indicating the shaft is broken.
I contacted the seller today and he says it was fine when it left him, which is obviousley a load of crap, and now he's trying to blame me

I've also noticed the cambelt indicator needle is pointing to used not new

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/Problems/IMG_0655.jpg

And this thing at the bottom of the sump has been filled in with some sort of black silicone.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/shrtwrec20/Nova%20stuff/Problems/IMG_0653.jpg

Also the timing belt cover shown in the ad wasn't supplied. Instead I got this item which will not fit as it will not go over the idler pulley!

Want to hope that nut hasnt made it through to the inlet :(

Not good. Dont want to make things worse, but theres no vernier pulley to say the inlet cams been adjust which the xe cam needs. Tension is well below what it should be too, the new/used marks are in the middle of that block

start a paypal dispute and its so frustating when you buy something and not even get a chance to hear it run then get the blame when you havent even started it. Or make the trip in person is what i would do.

I would of made the trip in person but I got this thing from Glasgow and I live in south west wales. Would of been an 8 hour journey. Wish I had now though :(
I've open a paypal dispute, and an eBay one. I will also contact visa tomorrow to see if I can maybe claim that way and get them to fight the case as the item is not fit for purpose. :(

Well, small update on my engine problem. ebay decided I could return it for a refund, which they would cover, but I couldn't be refunded for the original courier charge £120 and I would be responsible for the return charge also, another £120. Then I would have to find another engine and probably have that couriered etc. So I decided to keep hold of it, and fully strip and rebuild it with some uprated parts where possible.

My F28 G/B chassis mount has finally arrived and I'm finally due to finish night shift this week. I bought myself a propane space heater so I will get some propane this week and hopefully get back on track.

I want to consentrate on the shell for now. I think if I can get all the welding finished and get it primered and painted, a major milestone will be reached, and I'll have a lot of extra space which is currently taken up by all sorts of panels and interior parts lol

hopefully have a real update for you after next weekend ;)

Can you try for a partial refund given it's damaged/not as described but you want to keep it due to postal charges?

I tried that. Was only asking for the price of a turbo overhaul to be refunded, I never asked to return the item. When I phoned an ebay customer service advisor I got next to no help. The conversation went somthing like
ebay:Hello Mr Ebans
Me: Hi, it's Evans
ebay: Yes Ebans, How I can help
Me:I only wanted the item repaired, If I return it can I get the courier charges refunded also?
ebay:Yes you post it back then get money, not post cost though
Me: (explained how much it costs to post etc, it can't fit in envelope)
ebay:Yes you post it back then get money, not post cost though
Me: I'm not really happy about this, could i speak with your supervisor?
ebay supervisor:hello
Me: (explain situation
ebay supervisor:Yes you post it back ten get money, not post cost though

I proceed to bang head on wall and hang-up

lol

Shame to hear about the engine mate youve gotta be so careful when buying engines that you havent heard running, gunna be an awsome car when its finished tho good luck with the rest of the build.

Just ask for a refund of whatever percentage of the original cost you deem to be fair given it's condition that you didn't know about. It doesn't work out for you to post it back cost wise fair enough but paying full whack for something which is obviously not right is ridiculous.

Well, had a few hours in the garage today after I sobered up. it's amazing how little alcohol it takes to get you on your way when you aint drank in a few months lol.

I got the engine into place today, so i could get the F28 mount welded into place, and found it was rather far away

So i trial fitted my new front end (sorry no pics of that as i was a little pre-occupied) and that wouldn't line up either. Looks like the leg has sprung away a bit  So i'm gonna have to find a way of sorting that before I weld the mount in proper.

While I was doing that my mate was cutting away what was left of the old sill and he got the new one pretty much lined up. Gonna hang the door next to get all the gaps set tidy then weld it in place.

lol, **** news about the LET.

on the problem about alingment.

take out the LET.
put the front panel on, it can only really go in one place (read the guide in my sig)
put it in place, put on the tie bars so you know they line up,
then weld it in place so you know its all ok.

put a big ratchet strap around the inner wings to put them in if it needs it!

and then once the front end is solid then hang your massive paper weight in there lol if its still out (which it shouldnt be) then ask :)

Hi guys. Another small update. I'm finding it hard to get the time to work on this, but I've promised myself it will get finished :)

Had a few hours on it the other day so hung the door and managed to get the rear quarter panel lined up and tacked in place.

Haven't done the sill yet so that will be lined up again next and welded in also.
A friend of mine has an XE nova so I took some measurements in the engine bay and it turns out my chassis legs haven't moved at all. So I'm gonna try hang the engine in place again hopefully, later today or tomorrow if the wife gives me some time, lol and I will space it out with some washers. Once it's lined up tidy I'll make some proper spacers on the lathe in work and use them for the final install :thumb:

On a side note I got myself a new everyday drive. Here's some pics :d
