You can do that without linking it surely? In fact it would be to your benefit if you're actually looking to buy it, as all you do by posting it on here is advertising it further...

Martin, wind your neck in. Its been covered time and time again about how ebay links are disallowed in the general forum, and how we tend to be more lenient in the club area - as you're a club member, you were able to post in there. I know you're aware of this as you've commented on threads where this subject has been brought up before.

As people seem to moan about it being different rules for different people, we took a blanket ban on ebay links in the general areas. We do not have time (or often the ability) to check every single link posted, and to avoid the "oh but xyz person posted one wah wah wah" messages, hence the blanket ban.

As pointed out above, if you do see a rogue link on the forum, its probably one we've missed. If that makes you irate, use the report button.

A side note - when we say ebay links, we mean ebay items in general. Posting an item number does not mean you get round the rule

As for asking about a purchase from poland or whatever, you could have simply asked for people's opinions on buying items from poland or overseas or wherever via ebay. No need at all to post the link.

i can understand the ban on peoples own ebay links, and people asking "is this worth" or have you seen this ebay links/threads.

but when im asking general help on a possible dodgy item i think the ebay link is relavent.
even more so, if i said, i wanna buy a turbo from poland, someone might have had a good experiance from poland before and advise me so.

where as the ebay add seems abit dodgy hense me posting it.

i was not aware of the club section posting. i will keep it in mind now.

and you say the item number doesnt get around it, i see alot more item numbers being posted then links etc.

personally it doesnt bother me when any ebay links are posted, i think there are enough people in the world other then on here which would show a item its true value.

Jack
28-06-10, 01:19 PM
Again, if you see item numbers being posted its because we've missed them. We don't always see everything that gets posted.

There are many reasons why we don't allow ebay links - ebay don't pay us for a referral service, so why should we use our paid-for bandwidth to generate traffic, bids and income for them? Why should we undermine our own busy trader area? How can we moderate sales hosted? Should we take heat when someone buys something linked on here and blames us when it all goes south (we get enough poo when people buy from bad sellers on here as it is!). Etc.

I was looking at clarifying the rules a bit further with regards to ebay links etc the other day. I might prioritise that now lol

MK999
28-06-10, 01:23 PM
Ironic punishment ftw imo, all those posting ebay links, get everything they want to buy sold to someone else for the next month lol

bmw156
28-06-10, 01:38 PM
jack i agree that ebay doesnt pay png etc etc all the poiints you made.

but sometimes i will see a pic which has been hosted from ebay, when someone is asking about an item, its easy enough to "get around" the png rules.

i hear what your saying, but i think like you say the rules need to be clearer. or have an ebay section like many other forums :)
i think ebay is such a massive thing/place that it cant be ignored.

You have said before how you dont like the rules etc, so basically, if you dont like it, dont come on/go elsewhere?

There is no need for a ebay section, Whenever im on mig i never search it, if i cant find it on ebay, im not going to find it in a ebay link section.

Bingo.

Even a 'special' ebay forum is just FREE advertising for the scumbags, why should we give up our time to another forum to be moderated without the benefit of getting a traders free for it?

How does posting an eBay link differ to someone posting a link to a product from Courtenay, Amazon, MIGWeb etc?
Or infact any link to site sell selling stuff?

Because the prices dont jump higher as soon as they're posted, and no one else thats been watching it misses out because some pleb thats never gonna use it and doesn't want it decides it'd be great to add to his collection of bits. If you want it, you can search for it.

Ebay links were banned in the novatrader area for reasons as have been covered previously.

This was then extended to cover other classified listings, such as Pistonheads. Mainly as people were just honking up a link to a PH ad with no further details; again, PH don't pay us for a click through service.

We then found that people were sneaking in "wow, look at this item on ebay/PH" threads into the general forums, so the fairest way to combat this was to extend the ban to the wider forum. This also avoids any confusion and masses of threads like this. The rules were a little shady on this subject, so as a result have been cleared up.

As for posting link to shops - established retaillers tend to carry high stock and fixed prices, so the number of visits/purchases rarely affects prices. Also they don't function in an auction manner, so again sending high traffic their way won't affect prices. If the club sees a particular shop/retailler become very popular, we may approach them for a club discount/affiliation scheme.

We respect the fact that most rare parts are found on ebay. This is why we're more relaxed about links being posted in the club chat area (don't take this to mean you can do a free for all in the club chat area; the rules still apply, just relaxed somewhat [edit] this means don't post stuff for the hell of it, or non-interest items, or your own items etc..).

and it came up. seeing as it was cheap, but high risk, i wondered if anyone would buy it. i was never interested in buying it my self, seeing as my turbo is in good condition!
Fine, but maybe someone else had their eye on it. So you've pretty much admitted that there was no reason for posting the link at all.

The membership generates enough money to keep the site running smoothly.

I do not intend even for a second to have adverts flashing up everywhere, or between posts like some other forums. I think it looks uber untidy. We are not a business, I'm not sure how many times this has to be bludgeoned into people. Yes, we charge for traders to use the site to sell, because it is unfair to expect membership money to go towards the hosting of such adverts, and yes, we charge for using the banner at the top of the forum, but that is as far as it will ever go unless the money we generate from memberships falls short of what it costs to run the site.

As for the bleating about links to other manufacturers or suppliers, I do not see 5 links to Courtenay, for example, posted up every week. If I did, then yes, maybe there would be a problem, but i dont, so there isn't.

Ebay has its own search function, and if you are unable to use said search function to look for things, and have to be spoon fed links to items via threads on PNG, then you are either very lazy, or very stupid. Which one you are is entirely up to you.

As Jack said, we have left the option for posting any interest links, such as funny listings or rare parts or fat fingered listings that may not show up on a normal search, in the club members section, but again, this is not an excuse to go 'oh look, a Nova is for sale!' every fecking day!!
