Canister thing...

While trying to take my mk2 front bumper off the other week i came a bit unstuck. I was following the haynes manual and all was going well. I tackled the drivers side first then moved onto the passenger side. When i went under the wheel arch and was looking around directly behind the front bumper where the bolts should be that hold it on, i just couldnt find them but what i did see was this black canister about 10cm/10cm/15cm high. I think it was hiding the bolts, and i didnt want to try to take it out cos i dont know what it is or what it does. There seemed to be a tube going in the top and one coming out of the bottom??
Any ideas lads, can it be easily removed?

yup you can remove it fine it is the active carbon canister it is for imisions control undo the 8mm bolt and pull off the pipes then you can get to the bumper bolts
