So my car cut out and wouldnt start again and I checked a few things then got lazy and got the auto electrician round. He had a look at the car and told me that I need to replace the electronic ignition box pictured. Anyone know what this is called? I'm struggling to find one and was wondering if any other novas (1200, 1400) use the same part??

I dont think all 1300 came with this part?? Its bolted to the ns inner wing and is wired direct to the coil with the wire that has the connector on it. the other half of it is wired to the distributor.

The two plugs it plugs into are sitting at the join between the headlight and the grill as i've moved them there to try and get a better photo.

I really need to replace this asap so I can get the car back on the road so any help appreciated. :thumb:

ps I know the wiring is a bit of a mess. I had a new front panel put on and the guys who fitted it didnt put the wiring back properly. eg wiring going under the radiator hose next to the fan but i'll sort that once its running again.

I think i can short the circuit to get a spark but i've not looked yet. if I cant find a replacement within a week i'll try and bypass it as I really need the car on the road as soon as possible.

Anyone else with a 1300 with or without this part??

If I'm correct the box only controls the idle, was fitted to early 1300's distrubutor has 5 wires, later ones have 2 wires and no box on the NS chassis leg.

I had my early SR ignition fail twice with this set up, both times it was the 6 pronged module in the distributor itself.

Symtoms on mine were...

No Spark at all
No life on rev counter when cranking the engine

Look this item up on Fleabay, this is what failed in mine twice

Hope it helps

royston, its definitely not the 6 prong module thats failed. I have a brand new one fitted now anyway because I did originally think it was that so changed it. my autospark said its not the problem though. he said I need this box to get a spark again and then possibly a new induction loop inside the distributor to gain a strong spark as mine was quite weak. I think thats what he called it anyway, I know what part it is to look at.

you say you had your sr fail twice with this setup, do you still run this setup or something different now? Also do you know if the box comes on any other models or just early sr's??

I now run a later distributor, this system I believe was only fitted to early cars/sports.

I keep the old set up a spares for the Sports!

From memory, so I could be wrong, the module in the distributor tell the coil when to fire, when mine failed there was no spark/revcounter action.

As I said previousy I believe the box on ths chassis rail ony has an input to controlling the tick over, there is (pictured) a vaccum sensor coupled into the system, so would expect there still to be a spark if this bit is defective, I thought you could remove it and it would still function, but I can't prove my theory here.

If the induction coil, as you put it is weak I'd be looking to replace it/try another distributor.

i'm trying to find a distributor just now.
you are correct, you can still get a spark without the box but thought I would see if I could get another one first.

what all would i need to change to the later distributor set up that you now run?? just a late distributor??

cheers +rep

Yes, a later distributor, preferably with the std plugs on so it'll plug straight in, the rest of the vacuum sensor and box/wiring becomes obsolete
