View Full Version : Loom wrapping

Right-o,
The Nova currently only has its stock wiring as I removed the alarm system and what-not during the cars time at the bodyshop.
The current loom and the LET loom has taping around it to at least bunch them up together. I wanna do the same with the other wires. When the alarm wiring, HID wires and additional wires go in what would be the best way to contain all those wires to make it look like one loom/bunch of wires rather than loads of little wires dangling and loose. Same goes for inside.
Is there special tape that can be bought? I've prevşously wrapped wires in electrical tape but after a while due to heat the glue starts to melt and get's real messy. I'm considering making use of wiring clips which should help carry wires and secure them to the body but wanted to see if there are any wrapping available for looms.

Sh*t... I'm a right :tard:
Also called fabric tape.
Another thing, not sure if its what your looking for, but the plastic corrugated stuff might be a good shout?
vehicle wiring products are you friends :)
also a company that makes magmawrap sell good wire coverings too

You mean those plastic tubes/pipes you get as a cable tidy for PC's and stuff (but obviously a lot smaller in diameter)?
That fabric tape on eBay looks the stuff to keep things wrapped up nicely, and I'm sure the LET loom would benefit from some of that too as no doubt it's started to unravel.
Any place you know of Stuart that does those stuff? On on eBay having a look.

I have used self amalgamating tape for harnesses in the past, looks neat when done carefully.

Difference between the above and fabric tape?
get to a scrappy, find an ecotec v3eccy and pull the loom coverings off, its that crinkley stuff, then just trim and fit, et voila, oem.

Meh, allow going to a scrappy to rip stuff off. Will need to be cleaned etc and I can't be bothered. May as well buy new so I can get a good length of the stuff and just start using it.
I was going to suggest the plastic tubing stuff too. Get some brightly gay colours for added bling :d

whats wrong with good old insulation tape..... 69p for good stuff from wilko etc
looks gash, proper trunkling is where its at.
looks original....... where is his proper trunking???
Electrical tape FTW lol **** messing around with plastic

Ahh good thinking Mr. Souf :thumb:

Coz electrical insulation tape, starts to peel away and the sticky glue stays on the wires making them dirty and hard to clean as well as a PITA.
if you use decent stuff, and wrap it properly & make decent straight ends, it can look fine.
Once old black insulation tape gets wet it can peel etc, I done my nova loom last year, spent ages doing it, 12months later and its looking ****e/

aircraft style loom FTW
pics?
Already tried insulation tape time ago. Almost all of em started to peel at the first few cm's and it would leave all of it's stickyness on the wires.
insulation tape is the spawn of satan for this kind of job.
pics?
Same as this. But a normal engine or internal loom, all labelled & ready to remove/install countless times with minimal effort.

Tricks you into a false sense of security. You think you've done a good job and it looks nice when it's just been done but after a while it startes to peel muhahahahahahaaaaa :witch:

ahh right all plug and play. that would be a nice mod.

Im not talking about aftermarket management, just using that pic to give you an idea of what an "Aircraft" style loom is.
*Doesn't read it all and dives in*
Loom tape FTW. Insulation tape is nasty stuff once it heats up/ages etc.
The stuff Rob refers to is called conduit. It took me ages to find somewhere that supplies it in BLACK! lol
It seems everyone wants to wrap their loom in vivid colours. :/
This goes back years though, i've always been one for the subtler mods. Wrapping pointless parts of my loom in bright blue conduit somehow never appealed to me. Something that would usually not be seen with the bonnet up now draws your eyes to it. "Oooh look, you have horn wiring wrapped in that gay blue crap. Nice" lol

oh right you're actually talking about the way it's been wrapped. Sorry dude it's been a long day lol

Yep, can get entire car looms aswell as engine looms done the same  trick as fook but muchos costly :(

Non adhesive loom tape from Vehicle Wiring Products is you best bet. Part numbers TNA19 & TNA25 iirc(I used to work there for a couple of years). Convolute tubing is very good but makes the loom very bulky, good for areas where the loom could possibly be damaged.
Have a good look on VWP as they will have everthing you may need and the guys there are very helpful.
Will dig out some pics of my loom

^thanks mate, that should come in handy
I can image it costing a fair bit. I'll stick to car style looms, aircraft maybe another time :)

My electical first aid kit, all quality non insulated terminals. No Blue/yellow/red crimp terminals here!

Looks OE mint. Is that loom tape fabric or plastic? I've got that convolute section on the Nova already and it's in good shape. I was actually thikning to run the harness clips (which secures the covolute) round the other side of the slam panel so it is hidden.

^easily done. Exactly what I did on my white & red Nova's.

Really enjoy doing vehicle wiring and neat wiring makes an engine bay look so much better. Also neater usually means safer, dodgy electrics can be disasterous.
Novasport. Your kit looks like my mates. Like you say, none of those crappy blue/yellow crimps in sight! Reliable and awesome.
I agree on the conduit stuff, only for areas it may rub etc.

Its a self clinging plastic, needs finishing with a dab of contact adhesive on the end or adhesive tape.
Non insulated terminals are so much better to use, they are much more secure than squashing a bit of coloured plastic around the wire!
I picked them up while I was still working there and ordered a load of the push on plastic insulaters as fitted as OE.
The one thing I kicked myself for not getting was the top of the range crimp tool, was about £25 with my disco at the time but now its shot upto about £70-80!

Im one for less wires lol in the current build I reduced the internal loom from 25 wires to about 9 lol
Looks a sterling job tho!

What happened to the other 16 wires? Replaced with bluetooth?
What happened to the other 16 wires? Replaced with bluetooth?
Completely removed the circuits all the way upto the where the internal loom joins dash/ecu loom (not in a nova btw)
Rear audio x4 wires
Aerial x2
Fuel cap R/C/L x2
Rear wiper x2
Boot door R/C/L x2
Boot courtesy light x2
Boot alarm soloniod x2
I think there was actually more then 16 then?
All im left to do now is dash out an trace all wires back to the ECU &/or switch's. Also removed a 2" diameter loom from under front seats for elec/heated mirrors/heated seats/elec windows :) Oh an bypassed the standard immobiliser ;)

Thinwall wire is good, about half the size & prob weight of the equivalent standard wire so good for no compromise lightweight builds

Looks like I'll be probably going for this tap and some quality terminals. :thumb:
And for extra fun, make the Loom all one colour :d
Just tag the wires
ala clifford?
for my next trick i'll make a motronic ecu from a utterly butterly pot, some twigs and a dead sparrow. light weight and faster.

Funk that, it'll take ages. I'll just stick to how it comes but just wrap it nice :)
dosent take that long tbh... no longer than faffing about with different colours. Plus its even cheaper as you jsut buy one big ass reel of say white thinwall and be done it with :)
Surely if you're only using 1 thickness of wire it's not as light as it could be :p

I'm no re-looming the car, I was just after some tips and recommendations on products so I could re-wrap parts of the loom that have started to unravel, so it's looks clean and tidy.
:)
Surely if you're only using 1 thickness of wire it's not as light as it could be :p
For 'most' stuff you can get away with one thickness :)
The ratings are just a guide anyway lol (fire)
Wires thinner than the fuses for lightweight win lol
And for extra fun, make the Loom all one colour :d
Just tag the wires
and how do you tag the wires successfully??? jcb's have completely yellow looms with printed on wire numbers. the ink washes off with pretty much everything, fuel, oil, wd40, rag, looking at it for a few minutes etc.....

VWP sell tags that slip on the wires.. simplez
are they numbers or little coloured bands like smaller versions of those pigeon marker things
can get both iirc.
also you can put a written label into some clear shrink wrap and shrink the ends only. works well but makes for a bulky setup

Or use a wire tagging machine. Were it prints what ever you want/type onto a wire or a heat shrink sleeve

That would be quite trick, will have to see when I come to doing it.
just get to a scrappy & nab a correct age loom of a vauxhall car, then rob the wires you need for any stretching or modifying of any loom. then solder join them & use heat shrink... that way, the correct colour bits still do the right jobs...it is rather cheap & the haynes book still reads right in case the loom gets damaged or the tags fade..
try www.polevolt.co.uk (http://www.polevolt.co.uk) - cheaper than vwp on most stuff iirc
also the braided sleeving is really neat imo, and easy to use
