Identifying a big block gearbox

Am I right that the letters and numbers that show if the box is long or close ratio should be written here:

not sure whether they say bought the ratio, but just behind the gear housing on the box it should say f16/f20 usually just beside the gear selecter

or take it all apart and start counting all the gear teeth and work out the ratios:d go on be bravelol

Weird ratio's? All F20s have the same 1st to 4th gear ratios. It's the 5th gear/Final drive which is different.
