View Full Version : MK1 C20LET track car
As some of you know I bought this a few weeks ago, its pretty much perfect but I will be adding a few things to make it even better.
Plans are to:
- Change suspension (probably going to get some GAZ coilovers)
- LSD
- Move battery to the boot and recloate the air filter to where the battery is
- Fit the fibreglass bonnet and tailgate that I have already
- Get some 15s
And maybe a few other things

Are you keeping the Orange and blue theme? I strangely like it
Well, I want some Cesaros so might get them done in orange too and see what they look like

Or Anthracite with an Orange rim
agreed
Small update.
Car started life as a 1.2 so the beam didn't have an anti roll bar, I had a GSI one in the shed which I put on, also had 2 bushes but they're much stiffer than the standard one so I'm guessing they're made of some sort of poly.

Backs are rubbing when going round corners :( , what can I do about that?
They need the orange lip :thumb:
Loving the pics outside St James Park
Shouldn't rub being that high at the back:confused:
I'd of bought 45's, has it been lowered?
They rub when the suspension is moving, not all the time.
And yeah of course its lowered, have you not seen the 4x4 standard nova height? lol
My old Nova was lower and used to rub a fair bit
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff175/Rysee_sri_130/04102009047.jpg
Can't see why they are catching, are the shocks in good condition? Are they uprated ones? I asked had it been lowered due to most lowered Novas having the rear tyre in the arch and yours isn't, I can only presume it looks high due to being 'stripped out', I've seen vauxhall wheels on Novas with -100mm springs without any issues, the 50 profile tyres won't be helping though

Update time.
The 20XE engine is sold, I wish I did a few track days in it but never had the chance, oh well.
I picked up this to go in:
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc250/Mieran2010/Nova%20L/DSC_9553-2.jpg
C20LET engine running 291bhp, the engine swap should be straight forward plus the car is already been strengthened up front so no need to do any welding.
Also picked up a mech type F28 on Friday and my GAZ coilovers are in the post, I went for 350 front and 250 back.
GAZ coilovers arrived.
Fronts are 8" and 350LB
Rears are 10" and 250LB

How come these have two adjuster platforms per coilover?
So they lock together, and dont adjust themselves.
Also, spreads the load over 2 sets of threads, not just one:thumb:
Lock them together?
Matt, it was never on the C20, look at the pics/last page lol.
Car looks good mind ;)

Rears have an allen grub screw.
garethcolley
03-08-10, 10:22 PM
I have GAZ short bodied and they only have one per coilover. Each has an grub screw though?
I though it might be so you could keep a fixed pre tension on each unit by having one at the top.
My rears have a screw as well, just the top one.
I think its a bit pointless them giving you 2 adjuster platforms and only 1 C spanner lollol
F28 on an xe?

F28 is going in with the C20LET.

Makes more sense now lol
Intercooler arrived this morning

Still need:
- Exhaust system
- Fuel pump
- Boost pipes
- Air filter
- Clutch
If anyone has an exhaust system for sale please let me know, or if you can make one let me know too :thumb:
Progress is happening in the background but I haven't took any pics so thats why there wasn't any updates.
Scrapped the F28 idea and went for a F18W, got it and sprayed black.
Also put the engine in today.

Thats one of the cleanest shells around buddy!!
I would personally leave the exterior how it is, but maybe drop another 20-25mm.
Also, what sort of power are you going for with the let?
Any strengthening plates gone in?
Or is it just stitch welded?
Will deffo be going lower when the GAZ stuff is on and as for power the last owner said it produced 291BHP, not sure how true that is but he did take me for a spin when it was in his Corsa and it was scary fast lol
Strength wise its got a full kit welded in and about 90% of the seams in the car is been stitch welded
Its very clean underneath too:

Now get back on with the nova..

Liking zee astra, looks nice on the turbo rims
Small update:
Bought an Ashley 2.25" Nova exhaust system and standard c20let downpipe which will be chopped and welded to match
Also bought one of these Nortech oil sensor blanking plates, the sump will have an 8v gasket when it goes on

Most of vacuum pipes are now on but having a small problem which I posted here but still no answer:

Need an exhaust system for the coupe, not sure to go for oval tailpipe or 3" round?

Take it your looking at Ashly systems?
Try GT3 or Cybox on ebay.
Yeah I'm on a budget so Ashley is my only option. They do a full system for £195 posted.
I was going to get a centre section and backbox which is £150 but today I noticed the flexi under the manifold is blowing so I need to replace the centre pipe too :(
Started on the bumper to make room for the intercooler.
Not finished yet as you can see.
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc250/Mieran2010/SNV85085.jpg
Also found breather pipe that goes from turbo to rocker cover on ebay so bought that.
I need the gasket that goes between turbo elbow and the downpipe, vauxhall want too much, anywhere else sells these for a decent price?
what do vauxhall want for it?
Its just a crushable silver gasket isnt it?
£35 or something like that
I think its a conical type, something like this

should go really well with the let in it, top project
Cheers :thumb:
As for the gasket I found out that Volvos (s80 iirc) use same diameter too so I'm going to get one of them and try it.
I got mine from Vauxhall, was £15 on the TC That's the elbow to down pipe yeah?
Yeah elbow to downpipe
Also going to need a 3 bolt flange to weld on the exhaust system, if I can't find a universal one I'm going to buy a gasket then take it to a engineering place to replicate a copy of it in SS
Got the bumper finished today.
Not 100% happy tbh because I took off a bit more than needed on the bottom right corner but not a major problem, I'll get it fiberglassed next year before it gets resprayed.
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc250/Mieran2010/Nova%20L/Image017.jpg
Also cut the bumper bar
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc250/Mieran2010/Nova%20L/Image016.jpg
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc250/Mieran2010/Nova%20L/Image015.jpg
Looking good. Planning on doing many trackdays next year or?
Yeah planning on doing knockhill in march, few local lads organised it, I think there is about 15 of us going.
Small change of plan. Intercooler now will sit outside the bumper because I didn't want to cut any of the metal or hacksaw the bumper anymore.
Doesn't look that bad tbh
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc250/Mieran2010/Nova%20L/SNV85096.jpg
Also bought this for the wideband sensor:
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc250/Mieran2010/Nova%20L/SNV85091.jpg
And received gasket for the downpipe:

looking good :thumb:
Whats wrong with running the intercooler pointing up towards the slam panel, then you'll only have to remove the centre brace, got to be a better option than running the 'cooler in a vulnerable and unsightly manner.
Centre brace is already been removed and still no space
So there's no room between rad and rear skin of the bumper?
Rad won't be sitting in the normal place, it will be in the centre and coming forwards which leaves no room for the cooler without chopping things up
How father forward? (what turbo? Mine rads about an 1inch father forward, so i bought the slimmest ic i could get. And it sits nicely in the gap.

this looks like it means buisiness lol will be even better with the let!! but the black cesaro's definately look much better than th eorange astra wheels!! some nice bits youve bought aswell matey!!
cheers wudgey (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/member.php?u=16728) :thumb:
liking the bumper cut out, something mines having/got.
keep up the work fella
Cheers brucer
Bumper needs to be trimmed a little more because of the boost pipes, wish I bought one with smaller intake/exit
yeh, there isnt much room behind a gte bumper, i had to trim everything off to make it flat.
Not an update but just sharing my thoughts on what wheel and tyre combo I should go for.
Currently I have a set of Cesaros with 195/50 Toyo T1R tyres, but these rub on the rear arches.
I also have the comps that were on Linch's loon without tyres.
I'm thinking of selling both sets and buy some Pro race 3s in gloss black (ET45 7J) with KUMHO KU31s but not sure what profile to go for, 195/45 or 185/55?
Not sure if I should get 195s again just in case they rub and 55 is the lowest profile for 185 so going to look like balloons
Help me decide!
Another thought, what about 185/55 on the rear and 195/45 on the front?
http://i52.tinypic.com/2lm9cif.jpg
Been messing about with the Nova today.
Took old suspension off
http://www.pngclub.com/forum/[IMG]http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc250/Mieran2010/Nova%20L/Image020.jpghttp://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc250/Mieran2010/Nova%20L/Image020.jpg
A bit low lol
Then put coilovers on. Passenger side doesn't catch but it does on the drivers side so going to get the hammer out next time
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc250/Mieran2010/Nova%20L/Image021.jpg
Also came across a big problem when my mate marc went to put the bottom pulley on... It catches on the chassis!
It was the same one used on my XE, the only thing changed since then is I'm using f18 instead of f20, would that be the reason why engine is not sitting the same as before?
The engine will move alot on the mounts, loosen off the bolts and you might find the engine will move over to wards the n/s, which will give you more clearance.
Has the pic in the sides above been repainted? Paint looks very flat and nice.
I think I now know why pulley was catching, it was fitted the other way round lol
And the whole car was resprayed last year Benn :thumb:

Looking good mate.
David.
Cheers david :thumb:
Btw I forgot to mention, these coilovers are not the short bodied ones and I was a bit worried they might not be low enough, I tried them on the lowest setting and it was stupidly low , then raised it about 70mm and its about right now
so in other words there is no need for short bodied version
You raised 70mm from the lowest setting, or the car is sitting -70mm now? Very tempted by some in the new year if funds allow..
That mega low pic above is without any suspension, GAZ on lowest setting is just a bit higher, so low its not drivable because tyre is jammed on the arch
I didn't take a pic of after raising it up, I will next time I'm at the unit :thumb:
It's a case of piston movment tho... Hence the shorter bodies.. Glad you got the pulley sorted...
dj_wudgey
22-12-10, 08:37 PM
coilovers look good fella did look cool with no suspesion on though lol
True, the pic of them fitted shows it fully wound down and as you can see its almost on the bump stops
but now 70mm higher there is plenty of suspension travel :)
dj_wudgey
22-12-10, 08:52 PM
yea will handle better with more travel for the track but my sr will almost be on the bumpstops to look good at shows as thats what she's for lol!!!

can you explain to me. in the rear of my opel corsa A/nova mk1. . i want to get coilovers. ok. but i have the springs on the rear suspension unit and have (sock absorbers?) then under the arch?... can i get coilovers and if so does any1 have pics?.. or do i just get uprated socks and jusdt change the standard spring to lowering spring?.. cheers.
Yes you can have coilover like the front will have, but they arn't cheap.
Or you can fit a uprated shocks and lowering springs which is a bit cheaper.
Breather mod done.
Rocker cover was very clean inside, even under the plate so I think its had regular oil changes. :)

****ing sick of this ******* now, no room for anything ffs
Wish I never took the XE out!
No room for the rad, well there is a bit but that fan sensor at the bottom is in the way of boost pipe
Done about 10 hours on it in the last 2 days, cut the slam panel for afm to turbo pipe and few other little bits
Slam panel cut and painted, still a very tight fit lol
Rocker cover refitted and used some new bolts, those red ones were crap. Also fitted my 3" top hat.
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc250/Mieran2010/Nova%20L/slam1.jpg
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc250/Mieran2010/Nova%20L/slam2.jpg
Inside the car fitted boost gauge, wideband gauge, no pics yet.
While I was there I tried on one of the tigra wheels on the back, they seem to be catching on the GAZ coilovers, anyone have this problem with 195 tyres?
i didnt have any problems with 195-45-15's with Gaz coilovers at any height
The rad can be moved forward abit well thats what i have done
Where do I get a bonnet stay like that?
I hope your fittin bonnet pins, that severly weakened the slam panel
Why cut the slam panel like that ? :(
Iirc mist people get the turbo inlet pipe modded so not to weaken the slam panel
Yeah its weak, I should have not removed that centre brace tbh
What are you doing about ic clearance? (notice you've not cut the front panel at all)
Doing that means you can move the rad forward a bit.
The IC will sit outside the bumper, rad will come as forward as possible and centralised to make room for boost pipes on both sides
Got the Nova cranking today but wouldn't start because fuel pump wasn't getting any power, left it and will be back on tuesday with diagrams etc and will try find the problem :)
The IC will sit outside the bumper, rad will come as forward as possible and centralised to make room for boost pipes on both sides
Ah col cool.
I did a quick mock up today actually to show how its going to sit.
Yes I know its not very pretty and I'm not 100% happy with it too BUT look on the bright side it gets maximum air flow and not tucked in behind the bumper so will have cool charge temperatures.
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc250/Mieran2010/Nova%20L/icon.jpg
You'll be amazed how much air mine gets sitting right in the "mouth"
Not a fan on it sticking out but will get max air flow like that.

Did you not think about cutting a big hole out and mounting it further back so its flush inside the bumper instead of sitting outside the bumper, and maybe put some mesh over it or something.
The cutout on the bumper looks smart though.
I wanted to keep cutting things to a minimum.
Only reason I cut the top slam panel is because I had to and there was no room at all for the turbo to afm pipe.
Got it started today!
Forgot to take a video though lol
Nova is pretty much done now, just couple little things to sort out. Sorry for no updates in between lol

looks awesome mate,we going to see this at york?
I'm not taking the Nova to York again, entry road is horrible to drive on and my brace caught a few times! Might run it at the pod when I go to PVS.
On the drive back from York clutch went so going to fit:
- Tran-X plate diff
- Helix paddle clutch
- Millers 80/90 oil
- ARP flywheel bolts

Paddle clutch is ace mate, cant fault them..
Cars looking very nice, any plan to fit a grill?
And dam that lower brace is very close to the road, i would try to make one that mounts up over the exhaust system etc.
Scott
Cheer Scott :thumb: Btw, what paddle clutch do you use and are you running standard pressure plate or uprated?
And only pic I can find with grille on, still waiting for my mate to send me the ones he took the other day.

Mine is the Helix tri paddle from Mardi Gras motorsport (http://www.mardigras.co.uk/) mate, standard pressure plate etc, but then im only running 185bhp NA dont forget.
Edit: i can dig out the receipt for it, with part No's etc, but if your running f28 it might be different anyway?
Scott
I think its the same one I'm getting, part number: 78-4627?
I'm running F18 with flat flywheel
