I are mr hobby welder... a bad one at that lol
but want to have a better go at welding and of course need the gas.

I 'think' the welder I have is a mighty mig 150 or similar so is setup for using those stupid throw away bottles that last all of 5 mins.
Where is best to get a medium sized bottle from and refills etc?

I found this site and the disposables are tempting since they claim they have nearly double the contents of others. or the big bottles for £160ish

I assume argon/co2mix is best... but I've seen loads of different mix %ages mentiond

I plan to mostly do mild with the odd bit of stainless

halp lol

I rent a bottle through air products it comes with a regulator on the bottle and it's the half size bottle, iirc it's about £70 a year it costs me.

what kind of gas mix do I need if its mostly mild steel with occasional forrays into stainless (or would disposables be better value for occasional stainless)

i just just co2, i found co2/argon made the weld to hot and kept blowing holes in my work. i still use the small bottles and the seem to last fookin ages !!!

I use pub gas on mine, i heard Adams gas do argon with no monthly rental

Hmm, this is an interesting point.

Ive got an industrial tradesmig.

Im running argon shield IIRC, 5% argon, 95% co2, blows through at really random timeslol

Random as in when you make a run too long the build up of heat causes blow through? or random as in it blows through whenever it wants?

im with browney, i use the small "halfords" bottles and they last me a while.

the gas valves dont have to be all the way open, just so you can hear it on the end of the gun.

and stu, seriously think about how much welding you are going to do.
because i use small bottles, because i weld rarly. if i was welding big time, or had a big project car, i would be welding alot more and but a bigger bottle and have it on a welder stand etc.

I say don't even bother thinking about how much welding your going to do, i got myself a big bottle of CO2 already filled on EBay for the same price as 6-8 small bottles and with a small bottle going for 20 minutesmax a go compared to a big bottle thats still half full after six months, its a big difference, and i have abused my welder, i'm on my third 5KG roll

ok, I shall hunt down some CO2 in a big bottle :)

I guess worst case I sell it on after I'm bored making manifolds lol

using the keyword of pub gas will make life easier, basically its the carbon dioxide that's used in pubs to bubble your drinks lol

Edit, theres pub gas on the bay for £50 in Rochdale, if your going PVS maybe someone would be willing to help you out? lol

Just randomly, sometimes perfectly, but on the car (thin stuff) its great, then just blows a hole sometimeslol

I are not going to PV lol 2008 was my last year there lol

I'm sure a local pub would sort me out

Most probably, failing that ring Adams gas and ask them about the monthly rental fee, im sure there is none on certain if not all gases

If your all blowing holes your heats too hot or you havent enough gasflow, nowt to do with the gas.Mix is fine, its what i use and i havent blown holes in fukk all,and they use it at college where i used to go
i pay £6 a month bottle rental plus £27 to fill it up whenever i need to.

a lot of pub bottles now have nitrogen in them to stop people using it for welding as i found out my self !!!

Get the black bottle:p

Its not to stop people using it to weld with, its just a different mix for the less fizzy pints like draughts ets

so instead of googling a pub gas supplier, why not go to a pub, and ask them
