Has it been proven ever, a genuine 400bhp?

Rick Draper
07-06-10, 11:17 PM
Nic Barnes did it iirc.

Whats the life expectancy of a 400bhp LET though?

Rich
07-06-10, 11:37 PM
depends if its used or sat in a garage?

Is there a life expectancy of a LET though?

Nic Barnes did it iirc.

His seems very reliable too, 518bhp iirc.

more to the point, cost?

my bet is about 5k but i'm just plucking that figure out of the air.

Any engine built properly will last, it's when corners are cut things go wrong usually.

But yes, as far as I can tell for a high spec LET with all the right bits you're looking at 4-5k+ as mowgli said.

5k is very cheap imo.

1k for turbo
2k on top end
2.5-3k bottom end
1k management
then all the other bollox

yes it can be reliable aslong as its built properly, the problem is with vauxhalls its usually done on the cheap, whihc gives the engine and cars a bad name to some extent.

it will cost more than £5000 i can assure you

if i had 5-6k to spend on an engine, i'd just go & buy a much faster car...........

Hmmm - a much faster car for 6k would be a struggle tbh - is there much out there with a power to weight of over 350 b/ton for £6k? (assuming you had around 300 from the LET)

djbrowney
08-06-10, 08:26 AM
yes but for how long burgo ???

anything in standard form at 500bhp is not going to last long is ti ???

this has always been my argument, find me something that can goes as quick for sensible money

plus nothing better than being quicker in an old nova lol

if i had 10k to use, id be buying a cheap audi rs2 to plunder. easy to get 600bhp, and 4wd aswell. and 5cyl noise. mmmmmmmm

on a serious note, imho anyone who spends more than 5k on a motor needs their head examined....

yes will go on forever ish, fair enough its going to be a tad trickier to fit to a nova but thats part of the fun

there you go, spend the spare 2k on management

But that wouldnt fit in a nova would it buddy, the rebuill part i have bough is all top notch stuff, not the chinese **** lol if your build a nova fwd to go fast its needs to be vauxhall engine. so im my case i went for the let ;)

it's a vauxhall website, **** what will work at a cheaper cost people are here working with vauxhalls not the ****e above !!!

Sloth
08-06-10, 09:18 AM
/\ best tell most of the site to leave... not everyone has vauxhalls on here....

djbrowney
08-06-10, 09:29 AM
Cool cool buddy, the thread as kinda ended up asked how much a let should cost and people just saying use something else, what use is that lol

mowgli
08-06-10, 09:34 AM
so, to re-cap.... the std manifold is fine for 400hp, but everything else needs modifying.

which is why building a 400hp let is more of a labour of love or an exercise in engineering, rather than a recipe for reliable motoring.

Stuart

With ALL engine tuning its the magic triangle of cost-power-reliability

You can 'usually' have two of them and sacrifice the other, although in rare cases (usually big big money) you can get one high and the other two low lol

so its Power and reliability but large cost
Cheap, power but little reliability
reliable and cheap but not much more power

Sloth
08-06-10, 09:43 AM
so, what is needed for 400bhp from a let? anyone care to start a list?

Rick Draper
08-06-10, 09:45 AM

FPMSL Not a chance, far cheaper than that these days.

just text a mate who works for graham goode, his reply was, uber low c/r, a train turbo, and huge everything else. or a cossie motor...... made me lol

djbrowney
08-06-10, 09:52 AM
IMO when I have built my engine, the more money you spend the better the reliablity I should get, so maybe the question shoul be how reliable do you want it to be :)

Sloth
08-06-10, 09:54 AM
its vaux, its not reliable. for example chips let from his nova, it seemed to have a huge spec list, then grenaded.....

MattBrown
08-06-10, 09:54 AM
I dont see what 400bhp will do though?

Rick, when you had yours it was well over 400 wasn't it? Spin in 6th sort of thing?

Spekky said his can spin in 5th lol

Hasn't turbogav on mig achieved 400bhp figures using a std xe bottom end and a MAHOOOSIVE turbo?

djbrowney
08-06-10, 09:58 AM
Turbo gav made 450 ish on a standard let buddy it was only for about 1000 rev bec it spooled so late lol awsome road car, not so good on the strip !

Sloth

simps i can highly reccommend browneys cake, its uber tasty..... lol ;)

edit: oh its all gone gay....

1* std let
1* WON kit

WIN (ish) lol

i lol'd:d

Rick Draper
08-06-10, 10:53 AM
You could see 400bhp on a £3k budget, if that.

djbrowney
08-06-10, 10:54 AM
Won kit here matt lol your not gonna see 400 bhp from a standard ecu and a chip set I'm affraid buddy

Sloth
08-06-10, 10:55 AM
/\ does that inc buying a let?

Rick Draper
08-06-10, 12:06 PM
Nope but i would start with a XE anyway.

M4/Emerald ecu,
750cc injectors,
Omega or Mahle pistons,
Cheap rods,
Sprayers,
Mild porting on the head,
Cometic gasket,
T4 turbo,
XE cams,
200SX Manifold,
Ebay FMIC.

djbrowney
08-06-10, 12:24 PM
As above but i woul just at a set of head stuffs and a diff is a must :)
