I have a 1.2ST 1983 engine.... I have a problem i cant fix.
Story so far..
I had a water leak from the inlet mainfold on the alternator side, i also had a few dropplets of water in the carb. I stripped the engine and have changed the following :-
Rocker gasket
Head gasket
inlet mainfold gasket
Exhaust gasket
thermostate and gasket
new fan beltI have put the engine back together, everything tighten to the correct spec, started it up and run lovely...after about 7mins the water bottle started rise and boil over. I let the engine cool down checked the oil and after removing the oil filler cap i found it had white creamy stuff over the inside of the cap, i had this before with the orignal water leak.
So my question is can anyone explain what has happen or what i need to do next, replace what part.
Thanks in advance
It is possible that the cylinder head or block has a crack internally, if possible take it somewhere to get the cooling system pressure tested.
did you also remove the temp sensor from on the top of the manifold & bleed the system??
did you use new bolts too?
Water pump.

Agree, I would imagine this is the case, or the head has overheated violently at some stage and is now warped to the point it wont make a proper seal on the HG.

i would say cracked head or warped head
When you took the head off, did water drop into the oil and vice versa? This is probably my guess. Change the oil, and flush the coolant thourougly. Take it for a good run, and then re assess.

Dont waste any more money on the 1.2, put a 1.3 in it.
Assuming the HG change was done well, I fear a screwed head or even crack block around a water gallery.
this is one of the most original early mk1 novas about, it deserves keeping original.
??
Leak could have been diagnosed wrong, and the water problem could be the pump not working correctly.

its a funny quirk of nature, but water always leaks downwards..... even in australia..

thanks lads for your help...i must admit when i took the old head gasket off all the holes of the gasket where filled with dry rusted looking stuff.
There was no water left in the system after i drained it following the manual.
Could the themostat be at fault? its a brand new one but i tried the test as described in the hanynes manual and i couldnt see it move.
the stat needs to be in proper boiling water to get the proper effect.

The thermostat wont have anything to do with the oil mixing with the water, and if it's pressurising like feck when you run it, i doubt its residual water mixed in from the HG change.
TBH you need to strip the head off it again and inspect it thoroughly for blockages, as well as the block. and if that comes up negative the head will need to be crack and warp tested.
