View Full Version : Battery Charging issue
Basically left my lights on at the petrol station last night... normally fine but this time wouldn't start, just not enough to run,
I get jump started, go to pull away, I put my lights on... cut out and couldn;t restart. Finally made it home, got my Multimeter and as I take a reading of 4.5v it obviously cuts out, so i leave it overnight and go to work
I get home from work to try it expecting it to be flat as a fart... nope started 1st time showing 11.54v that dropped whilst running, fast when I put the lights on. I turned it off and it gradually returned to 11.54v again... charging whilst not running, I for the first time in my life:roll: am confused.
Back story...
New Bosch silver battery in December
Recon Alternator In Decemeber
Rad fan not working. I had taken the earth from somewhere else to keep it one before and this was fine until now
Wiring to alt looks fine
Alt belt at correct tension
Any help much appreciated, I want some beer and Tesco is far:thumb:

Earth strap on N/S inner wing OK, thats the usual cause of most issues.
Possibly alternator gone again

I'll check it tomorrow in the light, Cheers

Voltage of 11 would be ok if you said the battery was not charging but whilst running you should be seeing at least high 13's if not 14's.
Sounds like your alternator is not very healthy. I'd still check earth straps.

Yeah i used to see close to 14v. The Alternator could be borked, let's hope they do me an exchange as it's less then 6 months old
I will check earth straps before removing it though

I'd go search for the receipt mate. Most of the time recon alternaotrs are great but every so often you get a bad one.
Too tired atm, but my nova used cut out if i turn the lights on, was due to one of the earths.
Fit the X16
I can't find anything. Jump starting it and holding the multimeter on it goes from 11.80 and gradually falls about .01v/s. Might just ahve to take a hit on the Alternator
have you tried putting a earth from the block to the battery using a jump lead and see what readings you get? rules the earth bit out?

No, i'll try that in a bit cheers dude
Tried earthing to block and gearbox, never saw more then 11.57v, so that should mean it's the alt?
check the small (blue?) wire to the alt. & also, is the red light doing what it should on the dash... if it isn't lighting when the key is on, it could be that.. and after all the fun with your ign switch, are you sure its all in order???

That's a very good point, no battery light on the dash at all. I got sent the wrong barrel so still starting it on the switch. the little blue wire looks ok and so does the earth.
My mate has a spare alt of a 1.2spi Corsa B, I asked if I could borrow it to try it but his daddy won't let him as he says it wont fit... I prefer to find that out for myself but he's being a f*cknut

check the bulb in the dash
check the bulb in the dash
Seriously?
SERIOUSLY, it has happened before
SERIOUSLY, it has happened before
Crazy I shall go look
its been known for people to almost rewire their car & fit new alt, batt etc, all for the sake of a 50p bulb.
but if the bulb is ok, then it is usually the alternator, but just make sure everything is right on the ign switch for peace of mind.......
The bulb is shot, i swapped for the one 2 along that's the same size and the light comes on, so i'll go get a bulb tomorrow. It's showing 11.3v atm, not enough to start it to run it up the motor facotrs haha

drop test the battery
drop test the battery
Looks too complicated to do whilst under the influence of Herefordshire cider
ok, it doesn't mean actually drop it... it is a discharge test............
so is the bulb on or off when running?????
if it is on, then it isn't charging, as in the fan belt is off, or the alt is knackered etc.
if the light is off during normal running, but the light is on when you turn the ign on, then the battery is most suspect.

The light was on whilst running. Yeah I googled the drop test
Belts fine, not slipping or anything
ok, i think the alt is shagged, sorry.
A mate is picking this up for me as we speak

ok, i think you have some serious wiring issues.....
ok, i think you have some serious wiring issues.....
A fair few by the way things are atm
All sorted. Cleaned my earth to the chassis leg, put a new connector on the one to the slam panel. Fitted another alternator and all is good :)
