Lol, its worth a go

on a serious note though, whos had keyhole surgery before on their knee in particular. I have a rogue bit of bone floating around my knee somewhere and they are planning on removing it.

How long roughly do you wait for the surgery?
Does it hurt?
Does it hurt after?
How long before i can walk normally again and drive?
And most important of all, how long before i can play football again? The season is only 3 months away lol!

Cheers

I had proper surgery on a snapped ligament, only reason I couldn't have keyhole was the severity of the damage around the knee. Overall it was a year before I could play football again, they told me if I had less damage I could have had keyhole which would have meant 3-5 months before I could play properly again.

It didn't hurt after I had my surgery, well nothing worse than a cut knee and the pain before hand was so insane nothing was sore after that lol

I would think going by what they told me that you could be walking fairly soon afterwards, they told me to try putting weight on my knee after about 2 months.

I had it done about 4 years ago, same problem as you, lots of debris floating around. They planning on doing an arthroscopy?

To answer your questions:

How long? Private healthcare FTW I got to pick my surgery date
Does it hurt? Its a general anaesthetic so no.
Does it hurt after? Fook yes. Once the pain killers wear off its probably *the* most painful thing I've ever had done. I have a very high pain tolerance but it hurt, though compared to the amount of pain my knee caiused every day I consider it worth while lol
How long before you can walk/drive? Depends on what they have to do, some people are walking straight away and driving after a few days/week. Mine was particularly bad, I couldn't walk for two weeks and didn't drive for 6 weeks as I just couldn't bend my knee enough.
Football? Again depends on how bad your knee is and why you have debris floating around. I certainly can't play football ever again, I can't run much on a hard surface or it causes pain.

All in all my knee is waaaaaaaaaay better than it was before the op. For you the answers will depend on what they find when they look in your knee. I had MRI scans and all sorts done before hand and the surgeon said he was surprised at how bad it actually was when he got a proper look. Hopefully you'll have slightly better news :)

I had a snapped cruciate ligament & bucket handle tear of my cartlidge around the bottom of my knee cap repaired through keyhole surgery (done playing footy). Waited about three weeks after the first consultation with the surgeon and that was with the NHS.

It hurt like **** to be honest, like i imagine being stabbed to feel like! Sleeping was nearly impossible for about 3 weeks after. I was off crutches after about 6 weeks and then drove again after maybe 8-10 weeks. It took me 18 months before i could play footy again although i'm playing loads again and everything is fine but i had to do loads of physio plus lots of training off my own back to get the strength back. Worst part was rebuilding my hamstring as they stripped this and used it as the new cruciate ligament. It took months and months of constantly training to get the strength back and i must have pulled it about twenty times by trying too hard which was a further setback.

I seem to recall you work on the railway? As i do i and had to see a specialist railway doctor and be passed fit to work back on site again, which was about 6 months after the op. HTH.

Ah yes, muscle wastage is a major problem to get over. Kind of catch 22, you favour the other leg due to the pain and lack of strength which then makes the leg weaker. It's very hard to get the strength back and 'trust' your knee to take the weight again.

sod playing football until you are fit enough..... you have the rest of your life to plan for not the start of the season....

all surgery takes a good couple of months to get over, before you even think about starting to get fit again, then start off slowly, cos it will take a couple more to get reasonably fit.

forgot to put that in thanks mowgli

it took me just over two months to start getting back into my boxing, just have to look at it,is it worth making it heal quicker by taking it easy,or going through pain by playing football, making it twice the normal time for it to start getting better

As Roth said i had mine done in January, cartilage removed from my right knee, general anasthetic and i was away with the fairies whilst they did what they did, i hobbled out of the day surgery unit and i had two weeks off from work, i was driving again by the end of it, and the pain issue is all variable due to the different injuries so noone can give you an accurate prediction of how much you will incur, but i still have twinges and cannot fully crouch down (which is a pain cleaning wheels as im a valeter) but you should be fairly mobile after a few days and the rule of thumb is you can drive as soon as you can safely and effectively perform an emergency stop with no pain or discomfort, hope this helps bud:thumb:

They also want to do this, theyve found some more damage,

bone, cartilage and ligament.

How are you now Spud, do you think you could play football?

I can run/fast jog and could probably quite happily kick a ball but if i twist or move or jerk my knee in the worng way i knows about it, usually due to a massive click and a short stab of pain in the knee lol

I can kneel down on both knees now and crouch down for very short periods, i cant see it getting much better than this though really, im assuming youre meaning playing football as in like a proper team type of thing, not sure how id fare at that one but you can always give it a go aslong as you start out steady and see how you go i suppose?

Might sound abit backwards and stupid, but excersise and focus on building the knee up BEFORE the op. It will help afterwards.

I used to ride MX and a few mates have had knee ops. Par for the course with MX unfortunatly. Build up prior to operation will help.

one of my exes had keyhole surgery on his knee for floating debris, he was in and out in the same day but in alot of pain, his knee was bandaged up like a nuns body and he was on crutches for about 6 weeks before he was allowed to start putting weight on it bit by bit, he had it done about this time of year and he missed the rest of the year for football lol

Right MRI on the knee on Friday, too see what further damage I've done lol

I am also convinced I have torn some muscles in my shoulder, who has done this before, and did it hurt to move your arm above your head etc... Front of it towards the outside?

I am not going to the doctors, cause its a complete waste of time. The bloke doesnt know his **** from his elbow! I have some prescription Anti Inflammatories here, and various other prescription drugs that I have acquired lol.

Lol im back off work for a week now as favouring my right knee due to my injury/op, has now taken its toll on my left knee, stretched/sprained the ligaments in my left knee now, been given a week off work some more ibuprofen and instructions to stay off it.

Hmmm, week on the beer for the pain methinks!

spud, your quack is clueless.... lying still & doing feck all is about as much use as praying to your ancestors to cure it.... light work & regular movement is the key.

i was in a fracture clinic & got told by a doctor that my xrays showed my knee was sorted & i could be discharged... my missus was a nurse in the same dept, so i asked her to get the head man out to see me, as i hadn't had an xray since the night of my smash, a month before...... just how many people would have hobbled out the door thinking they were cured......

I have something similar in my ankle due to ripping the muscle. When it's cold, boy do I know about it! Do you have this problem in the cold Spudly?? Like slight stiffness and exceptionally loud cracks on occasion, without moving your knee the wrong way?
