View Full Version : 1.6 16v Nova
Hi all my names Dayle and im new to the site so Hello!
Well about a month ago i bought this for the Mrs as a project. A nova was her first car and she always wanted a GSI.
Its a white nova fitted with a courtney c16xe although im unaware of the spec of the engine at the moment but it leaves a friends xe powerd corsa.
Car needs work and has been in the fathering laws garage for a month! Hopefully going to make a start on stripping her down this weekend and starting the work to get her road worthy again as someone has done some ok welding and some right shoddy work!
Engines sound did a compression test and 235psi across all 4 pistons but when first started from cold extremly lumpy as though its running on 3 and wants to die but she revs ok also the revs do sometimes stick on and rev to 3k on its own but the car has been stood off the road since june 2006.
Anyone any ideas on what this could be?
Sounds impressive mate get upto 15 posts and fire some pics up in here get some of the problem areas too like inner wings, battery tray etc.
Im trying to get upto 15 Posts lol. The rear arches are ok one has got surface rust but its certainly not rotted. Little plate in the boot. Floors seem solid. Its had the front chasis legs welded and the guy who has done it has made a mess. Welded 3 sides out of 4 on the plates (don't know why!) and then shultzed over it so looks bit of a mess under there at the moment to the point ill be wary of posting pictures! But hey its a project.
On the other hand battery tray isn't too bad ive seen alot worse i suppose.
:) Hopefully be able to upload some pics soon.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v253/Dayle/nova-1.jpg
Someone made a right mess and has done the welding but instead of doing a proper job they have sultzed over all the welds and it looks awful. Ive already made a start and it looks 100% better already need to get some uptodate pics

Doesnt look to bad pall sorry i couldnt come over maybe next time keep up the hard work
Car looks good pal, vents look good
not a fan of those blue rear tins tbh
Looks like youve got a bit of work on your hands there bud but will be worth it once done as 99% of novas will need some form of welding these days, id check your battery tray too as you have water drips on your floormat in the drivers side where it looks to have dripped through the holed battery tray:cry:

sell that gearnob to lol
it doesnt look to bad as others have said also source some centres for them vectra rims and reburb silver will sooo much better mate
Suprisingly the battery tray isnt that bad, it isn't holed any where anyway. Think when i take the front panel off i will remove engine and box, i did find a hole in the front chasis leg on the off side not sure what to do with that. so with the engine out ill be able to asses the damage more and see wether its wothwhile doing all the work!!!!!

Got a friend helping me out this weekend so removing the front panel and plating one of the inner wings and welding the strengthining plates up on the front chasis legs that someone has half done.
I know this car well, as it should actually be in my posession just now lol
It used to knock about my old village a few years back, was absolutely mint then and I can back up the fact that it is running quite a big spec. The inlet is standard but has been worked. It's a very quick car.
Was very tidy back then, sitting on speedlines, until it had a bit of a prang, was poorly fixed, and sold on, then sat in the boys garden doing nothing for ages.
Thats the point I bought it. Paid for it. Then discovered it was gone when I went round to collect it. He'd been offered more money by someone else and sold it to them as well.
Wasn't best pleased!
So can I have my car back please ;)
Tasty inlet where did you get that from???
looks kool fella :)
love the vents :)

i love the bonnet too nice touch first dibs if it comes up for sale lol
Inlet manifold was a ebay special. It was built by a company called velos motorsport who closed in 2004. I just had it bead blasted and powdercoated. hopfully add a few extra ponys.
after a quick glance over the inlet.
What are you going to be doing about all the vacums?
There are take offs under the inlet for 2 vacums (threaded holes) still not familiar with the C16xe so not sure what vacum's they have. I take it one for the servo. (the x16xe runs a map sensor which im sure the C16XE doesn't as it runs an air flow meter) can anyone shed any light on this?
Stripped the inside out this weekend and started to make some plates for welding. Some places have really gone and some places that should have haven't. Notice the yellow balls everywhere someones had a bb gun in the car also the mrs found some fruity flavour jonnys under the carpets, best before jan 2000 lol
Progress has stopped again now as there has been a major gas leak under the house and transco currently are digging the garage floor up!

Anyways as you can see the boot floor is pretty nackerd.
Will report back later in week/weekend

Small update again. Got the car up on a spit now. Removing the underseal and cutting the rear floor out where it has gone and the rear inner arches. Also about a foot of the back chasis legs have gone on the N/S and about 7" on the Off side. Its soo much easier working around with this though! Need someone good at welding now lol.

Well old exhaust removed, fuel tank and rear beam. Started to remove the underseal with the heat gun and a scraper!
Started to make some plates up for the rear arches as they have gone on the inner arches/boot floor. also the N/S chasis leg about a foot has gone so cutting that out and making up some new chasis leg to weld in. The o/s one is ok turned out to be patchy underseal and surface rust which is good!
Anyways some new goodies arrived this week.
Magnex exhaust bought off here.

and a full poly bush kit to freshen up the suspension.

Hoping to start welding the rear end up this weekend then things should hopefully start coming together as the Mrs can't wait to get out in it!

But more done. Sort of got all the N/S underside ready to be welded up this weekend but not having luck finding anyone to do it. I have friends who can weld but getting hold of them to do it is like finding hens teeth.
So if anyones free to give me a hand as i have never done any welding before but have the mig and gas etc would be much appreciated!!
Well seeing as a friend let me down this weekend again with the welding i set out to have ago myself. Its not great but for a first try i don't think its too bad!!!

Coming along nicely but have you welded your lass to the car lol
im firing 15 posts, aint easy without sounding completely pointless, just like this one
Yes but spamming your way to 15 posts, like you have done, will get you in trouble.

Underseald with dinitro and also used a dinitrol chasis rail oil injected in the sills and chasis rails.
at the weekend the new tank will be doing on new fuel hoses and the beam that has been rebuilt (new bushes new bearings brakes shoes etc and painted black(
Whats the chasis rail oil like?
Really good mate, similar consistancy to the underseal but instead of black its brown and made from different chemicals. The dinitrol stuff is really good the MOD use it on the vehicles. They give you a drill bit and plugs and a nozzle that sprays 360 degrees but ive found alternative holes to use rather than drill unecesary holes!

Liking this a lot, the inlet manifold looks great!
Well after coming home after a week on holiday i got alot done today and the fatherin law did some work in the week. All the welding under the engine bay has now been done and the new front panel is now all welded in place. Wings and bonet fitted nicely and everything lined up so all good!

Well bit more done yesterday. The front panel is fully welded up now and we welded 8 plates under the engine bay and did some seam welding so its looking ALOT better than it did.
New discs also arrived and new wheel bearings. Also stripped down all the suspension components cleaned and re-painted so got a great deal done.

Top work dayle, looks spot on :thumb:
Cheers guys, slowly starting to see a + to the project as it slowly starts to come together! Hopefully engine will be back in within the next week. Just need to get all the new gaskets and seals.
Not much more to report on this but got a bit more paining done but with the weather being soo cold it hasnt really been great going in the garage and the mrs lost her job so thought id have a bit of a break from the car. Anyways she has a job again now and few bits have come.
Santa came early today with a nice new stainless steel manifold.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v253/Dayle/Manifold.jpg?t=1293133406
Also waiting for a new front brake set aluminium 4 pots and racing rotors.
Me and the mrs have been having a chat as its her car and were thinking of a weekend only car (which means i can build a proper 1600 next year)
Also just after xmas i should have a DTA S40 and a custom loom made and hoping to get the car fully sprayed in the new year!
watch that exhaust manifold if your running anything under 60mm lowered
Mine used to scrape the floor on braking, You would be better off with a 4-2-1 for the c16xe aswell.
I know the one that was on was a 4-1 mildsteel BTB one and one of the bottom primary's is about half the diamiter than it should be due to the previous owner looking like her rallied it over every speed bump going :-( i should try get the oxyacetaline on it and heat it up see if i can push the dint out.
The car isn't as low as it was when i bought it now.
Cheers for the advice though mate.
yea i ended up getting the sbd 4-2-1 in the end was loads better than the ebay jobby
Should of gone for a 4-2-1, powerwise mostly.
Crack on though :)

good project you got going here matey!! will be easier to get sorted having it on a jig!! hope your getting rid off that steering wheel though lol
Yeah to be honest if i didn't have the jig it would have been scrapped it needed that much sorting on the rear chasis legs and boot floor. Anyways its all sorted now.
Steering wheel is defo going i hate it!
Scoorge how long ago was it on ebay?
Engine bay is fully painted we bought the same colour as the new Vauxhall VXR's

Front panel prepped for painting. enzyme Inhibitator horrible colour stuff but i swear by it. Primer over the top of that then paint with celulose then a high quality thinners for the top coat.

Inlet manifold. Well i fitted this to the engine and it turned out the c16xe throttle body hits the cam cover ever so slightly when the throttle cables in place so im on the look out for a x16xe one now as this clears.

Bay looks tidy, are the VXRs not just glacier white or are they different?
Are you still looking for a X16XE throttle body? I do have one.
Yes i am mate. How much do you want for it with postage :)
Bay looks tidy, are the VXRs not just glacier white or are they different?
Olympic white i think it is. I just wanted the brightest white i could get.

also what wheels you planning on running?
The wheels that are on it i think are 15" ones from a Vectra which i quite like but i need to find some center caps as it didn't come with any. As for colour i don't know yet black or anthracite i can't decide.
Well not updated for a while but this is where we are upto.

very nice dayle coming on well.
just bit of advice put the raditor in first before the engine mate life alot easy as i found out the hard way with my x16xe.
Yeah I found this to be a pain when I was taking the engine out!!! The large fan was one of the main issues so I've gone for a slimmer but larger overall surface area rad and a slimline fan thats mounted on the outside. :)

look really nice mate but i think it need a set window surrounds and the black viny on then B pillar to brake it up a bit
Love freshly painted cars. Especially white ones ;)
What do you mean by window surrounds?
I think i will get some black vinyl for the B pillars was talking to the mrs about this last nite.

window surround give the rear window more of a straight angle in the corners like on mine
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d96/craig_johnson_/DSC00873.jpg
Ahh right, i quite like them, thinking of some coloured strips for the grove in the front and back bumper but not sure what colour yet?
I also need some plates for mounting the wing mirrors to the doors if anyone has any lying around?
Danny s-p
11-04-11, 01:46 PM
i have set black window surrounds mate and the bumper strips id say black or red
Thinking red, as the engine block and the inlet manifold is red. Is there anything in particaular that people use for the bumper strips?
Its looking good mate, although I don't like clear rear lights they kinda suit the colour. Personally I'd still have standard or euro reverse/fog but its not my car. Good work mate :thumb:
I don't know wether i like the lights either to be honest. I thought that yesterday but they do go with white but the car's being built for the Mrs so its her choice i did just mention the window surrounds but she likes it as it is.
Are you still breaking a GSI? i need the plastic bits that fasten the mirrors to the doors if you have any?
Yeah it does look good mate, this is the first car I've seen with clear rears that I haven't instantly though "doesn't suit" as its kinda does.
Edit: GSi bits, err, I have some mirrors here so yeah I have them bits.
If your willing to sell could you sort me a price posted? The car used to have DTM mirrors which are horrid so i bought some GSI ones but they don't come with the plastic mouldings to fasten them to the car!

Well engine is now in. Didn't mange to get the brakes done in the end as we spend a hour trying to get the engine streight and it turned out it was just a optical illusion,

Looks good, The engines don't necessarily look straight/level, I had a similar comment when I fitted my baby xe.
Shame about the TB, What you going to do about it?
I know. The throttle body side of the engine looked closer to the front panel than the other end but after a bit of head scratching etc the tape measure came out and unbelievably it measured 8 inches from the inside of the front panel to the centre of the spark plug both sides of the engine so panic over.
As for the throttle body. I need 2 flanges and a piece of pipe in the middle welding together, I don’t really want to cut the inlet manifold up!

Great progress! engine looks smart with that inlet on it. keep up the good work.
I'm sure I read somewhere about using a Sierra throttle body on these or is that for a 2.0?
Quite a bit more done yesterday. I started to make my adaptor to mount the throttle body to the inlet.

Coming along nicely, liking the idea of modding the existing throttlebody mount to fit your inlet.
Coming along nicely, liking the idea of modding the existing throttlebody mount to fit your inlet.
Cheers.
Yes i used one of the old adaptors that was attached to the standard manifold then piece of intercooler hosing then discovered i had a spare throttle body lieing around. I have not cut the front off the throttle body so i now have 2 flanges and a piece of pipe. Didn't fancy welding streight to the throttle body incase it warped it or damaged it in some way. Means i can change the throttle body too if needed.

Nice progress, I have to mention it though. That inlet plenum ideally wants a taper in size at the 4th cylinder end. To help get the correct airflow into the furthest runner. Just look at other plenums & you should see what I mean.
Yeah, I know what you mean mate, but sadly Velos never did that. But |I understand that it should be like a wedge shape. going smaller the oposite end of the throttle body.
Awesome project so far.
Be looking forward to seeing the finished article!
Small progress update and i am now finally beggining to see the light at the end of the tunnel!!!
I have painted a black pinstripe on both front and rear bumpers really finishes them off i think.
Breaks are now finished, just waiting for the fittings to pipe them up to arrive.
Repainted the strut brace and also the cam cover which has finished the bay off even added to laquer.
Wheels have been removed and are being repainted black and i have also re-fitted the lights and mesh in the grill.

What you doing Sunday? Fancy a rasp out in one :d I need to pick up mk1nova_rich up for a blast so could detour over your neck of the woods ;)
Pm me details of your postcode, obviously if your available lol
That would be kool! But in the afternoon me and the Mrs are going over to Manchester, she has booked an appartment and tickets to go watching dancing on ice live :wtf:, maybe ok i suppose lol.
When i bought the car the lad took me out in it and it seemed to go quite well for what it was, but I've fully rebuilt the engine since and obviously now it has the tube which is meant to make bit of a difference and its running a DTA s40.
Reason why i bought the nova is she wanted another one as her first car was a 1.0 nova which she loved and she always wanted a faster one and i didn't want her to have another rs turbo after the grief with the last one getting stolen and never recovered.

Small update, getting there now!
acquired some centre caps for my wheels sanded all down and flatted down, primed and repainted black then a coat of lacquer. Rubbed the rim down to a polished edge to break the black up also running new 195 45 15 Uniroyal Rainsport 2's anyone used these before they any good?

Also all the breaks are finished now was having problems with the rear shoes sticking but these have all been fixed. So I will have some ATE callipers with braided hoses and brand new drilled and grooved discs for sale if anyone is interested.
Finished the exhaust off and that is all bolted up.
Loads of little jobs like cleaned the car and fitted new headlight clips etc.

Does anyone know if there should be some clips that fit to the wings so the grill clips in?
I have now started on the interior, going for black dash and trims and some new seats i have bought, my nan is re-trimming the rear bench in the same colours as the fronts.

Hopefully getting there now, aiming for it to be finished in 4 weeks time maybe just over and hopefully running by then, that's the next big spend having it set up.
Small update but sadly no pics yet. Spend all day Sunday on the car and it was bit of a disaster really just one of them days that really pee you off.
Firstly I made a start on the subframes for the seats these look easy to fit all the holes on the subframes lineup to the holes on the seats.
Next i started fitting the wiring loom. I must have spent about a hour looking for my box of heat shirnk, could i find it anywhere could i eckers so i had to send the Mrs to halfrauds.
Some of the wires on the loom where too small so i had to move the ecu from the original position and drill a 40mm hole through the bulkhead which I wasn't best pleased about so had to do some paint re-touching up but that's al done. Engine is all wired up now.
I finished the throttle body off and fastened all that up, doing so i got my Halfords socket set (one of the big ones) opened it the wrong way, Sockets everywhere couldn't believe it I need to write a big sign on the top of it saying this way up. must be the 100th time I have done that.
Hoping to get the rest of the engine finished at the weekend and the rad plumbed in etc. Still need to finish wiring the relays but there only a 10 minute job so in a couple of weeks time it should be start ready! Then its off to a rolling road to get them to properly map the DTA.
Does anyone know if there should be some clips that fit to the wings so the grill clips in?
If its what I'm thinking of then yes, there should be a black oblong shaped clip that slots in the little bit of the wing behind the grill.
They are the ones. Any idea part code for these? Mine seem to be missing and can't find any on ebay. If i go into Vauxhall i already no i will get a look like this :tard: over the counter.
No idea on the part number, I have one lay about in my car but just had a look and cant find it.
I Think the part number is: 903 214 25
Cheers Alex, I shall have a look into this. :)
Rolled the car out the garage today, Sadly you cant see the true shine as its full of black spray dust at the moment and is in off a good clean but as you can see it looks hell of a lot better than when first bought. Still need to fit the grill but thats removed while im fitting the oil cooler and finishing the fan wiring etc off.
Anyways what do you think.
I'm well on with the interior now too. Its all being painted black with vinyl paint.

I love this build but there are 3 things I am not keen on,.. only my opinion though. These are, tints, tail lights and lack of window surrounds..
Get some red tinting spray for the lights :), remove the window tints and fit some rear surrounds and she will be one bang tidy nova I would be proud to own!
Keep up the good work pal!
Cheers mate,
Your right I'm not keen on the three things either.
I don't like the blue tints.
I would like some window surrounds but struggling to find some cheap (we need to stop spending money on this car its costing a fortune lol and I'm never going to get anything near what's been spend back but then again that isn't why it was built).
Rear lights are like Marmite but the Mrs likes them and this car is for her so she needs to have some say!
Been a while since i posted but had a productive day today. Was hoping to have her running today, but you can't rush these things. was having issues with the wiring to the alternatior and the oil pressure sensor. it was a no go without wiring these in as the loom had been butchered by the previous owner!
Inlet manifold is sorted, was bit of a pain but i'm relatively happy with the finished result.

Phil, the wirings easy, but I've installed after market management now. The problem I ran into is the bloke who originally did the conversion bodged quite a lot of the wiring. For example soldering in different coloured wires in place, scotch locks, twisted wires with tape. So that side of things have been a pain. But we are slowly getting there now!
Connor I too agree about silver/anthracite wheels but the car is for my Mrs and she was adamant that she wanted them black. (I've never liked black wheels)
That's looking fantastic mate!
Not really posted in here for a while but to update, the engine now runs and I'm waiting to get it booked into Wayne Schofiled at Chipwizards in Rochdale as i believe he's the man to Map DTA ECU's. Engine may is almost 100% complete. Been doing alot of work on the interior this past weekend. Painted it all black and to be honest it looks pretty good!!

Aint seen one of those Velo's inlets for years.
Cheers Adam, Believe me matey if we hadn't had the spit she would have been on the scrap yard a long time ago. 14 Months I have been working on this but again it hasn't been a solid 14 Months, just when i can get up there at weekends as its in the fathering laws garage. Yeah i believe the Velos things are quite rare now. I did speak to him about it over Facebook and he would check if he had any in stock but he didn't get back in touch. He did say they were 2 prices £18 or £28 with the bearing supplied and pressed.

cool fair dos. still cant believe he's on facebook.
Small update on the car. We are getting there now, brakes are fully finished after having a night mare with the brake hoses. Interior has all been re-done and is currently being re-fitted and I have made some custom mounts for the recliners. Car has been booked in with AB Garage in Hawarden, Been told these really like DTA ECU's i did try and get in touch with Wayne Schofield but with no such luck.
Has anyone used AB Garage for mapping before??

Cheers peeps, Can't believe that after 2 weeks I finally book into a rolling road then Chipwizards call me back the day I book with someone else. Stuck between 2 rocks on who to get map the car now!
I know Wayne Schofield is meant to be the doggs dangleys especially with mapping DTA,s but I've heard A.B Garage are good at what they doo and are good with the software at a fraction of the cost.

Looking good Dayle
If you can afford it, its worth going to Wayne at Chip Wizards in Milnrow/Rochdale
I know a few lads who have had cars mapped and they can only sing praises for wayne - Certainly knows his stuff
I know he's obsessed with getting the best he can from each engine, and won't charge an obscene amount even if he's spent Hours and hours on it
Geoff Roberts had his Mk2 Escort rally car there recently - was there from lunch time till after 9pm and geoff ended up giving him more than he asked for !!!
I think Lynchy had his rallycross car mapped by him as well :)

Not long been back from the rolling road. Was quite an eventful day and can reccomend Aide at AB Garage in Hawarden. Really nice bloke and knows his stuff especially with DTA's.
Car did well today especially because of the 30 degrees weather we had the blowers wouldn't blow enough cool air to keep the radiator cool so slowed things down a bit. We need to go back in a 1000 miles to finish the map off as she is currently limited to 1000 miles as the engine is REALLY tight. Although I think these aren't the most accurate numbers and i don't normally bother as its pub talk but it made 118bhp at the wheels at 5500rpm. When its run in a bit more its going back for the top end of the map finishing off. But the car does drive lovely as i found out before when the Mrs took it around the block and the torque is really good too.
All in all a top day and again bit thanks to AB Garage.

Not posted in here for a while but car's all meguiars'd up for summer and now running a LC-1 on the DTA S40 currently see's about 45MPG now on a run which is better than the 28MPG we originally had. Had a local lad re-map the tootling around traffic fueling it was 30% too rich in some places.

so the first place that mapped it hadnt done such a good job?
Did you ever get that mechanical cambelt kit from bowyer?
No mate I gave up in the end lol.
Yes they had done a good job... of the top end above 50% throttle it was spot on and the lambda removed a max of 5% fuel and about 85% throttle it removed and added none. It was all the bottom end that was to ****e especially starting cold in a morning but that's sorted now fires first time even down to 0 degree's. Suppose they can't do everything in 5 hours or so. The lad who finished it off had the car for 3 days and payment was 2 packs of tobacco and a crate of John Smiths! WINNER.

ahh, so the first session was a bit of a lesson in mapping on a budget, but it worked out for the better in the end.
Cool. Prooves once again that binning that o.e inlet on these gets the engine where it should be. Looks like the Velos 'torque tube?' inlet they used to do.

Looking good Dayle, the engine bay looks nice and clean :) similar spec to my engine which is also very torquey
Yes its a Velos torque tube. Another thing I did discover after the first mapping session was there was a rattle somewhere in the engine and under further investigation someone at some point had tried to removed the screws from the throttle body butterfly.... and had caused the butterfly to move slightly as it wasn't tight. I don't think that would have helped! Yep the engine is quite torque to be fair pulls quite well for what it is. Still the rev limits only set to 6800 as the standard injectors on the C16XE won't flow enough for any more revs... and it runs a standard FPR but its OK for Katie.
mk1nova_rich
07-06-12, 04:21 PM
Mine is limited to 7220rpm on standard injectors and FPR. Still wants to keep going as well :d
Its just what the bloke who mapped the car said. We tried to put the fuel in the ECU that the engine would need and it spat its dummy out saying the injectors couldn't supply enough fuel at given fuel pressure. Would have been nice to put it to 7200RPM, I'll have to invest in a uprated FPR.
