jumped in the car to drive home last night, went to turn the key and there was a nasty bang/grinding noise. had a look at the engine and a conrod had fired through the side of the block:cry: . its an x16xe i belive and the top has had some work on it and its got a kms ecu and loom and modifed intake manifold etc so its not a bad lump. an i just replace the bottom end and thats it or have i got a whole load of problems ahead? cheers

Just buy another block. Will be the easiest thing to do.

ok, something caused it...............................conrods don't just jump out of a block to get a change of scenery.

it was either a blown headgasket, or a leaking injector that must have filled the pot, or too high a level in the sump causing it to hydraulic. check the head too & then decide what you need, personally, i'd say get a complete engine.

i really do know what caused it, ive only had the car 3 days and the engines been running fine. no wierd noises or nocks etc??? 1 thing i did notice was that before i you turn the engine over i could already hear the fuel pump? how can i check for damage to the head, i wanted to keep the head really as its had work done to it. ported, camshaft etc. the other idea i had was to drop a redtio in as i have one spare and the car was originally a redtop so all the hard work will be done write??? heres the car http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220610371426&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_797wt_1139

I say the problems with the stick on fuel filler cap, has the head been skimmed? has it had so much taken off you'd need to run higher ron of fuel?

have you got pictures? the only way there isn't a problem as such is if the conrod wasn't bolted to the crankshaft properly and over time its loosened and just happened to break on you.

did it go through the block as soon as you turned the key?

Its probably span a bearing and thrown a rod.

just bung a c20xe in and be done with it lol

or a V6! but on a serious note how is the fuel pump wired in? not on the ignition live? as said they dont just throw a rod gotta be a underlying problem somehwere and id try and find that before you bang another in :thumb:

Fuel pump primes on them of course, same as most?

Plenty of smallblock's do throw rods tho.

I think it was a crank sensor problem that caused it, that or coolant temperature sensor problems.

the engine is running on kms engine management and the top has had work done but i dont know exactly what, but can find out by receipts. will upload pics later as im not sure if the engines an x16xe or c16xe but the intake manifold bolts on top of the rocker cover. i spose the thing to do is remove the engine and inspect write? what am i looking for? cheers

but if there is no damage to the head what can go wrong?

weak rod, metal fatigue, partial seizure leading to an extreme stress on the rod? the list is endless, but smallblock 16v's do like eating themselves. personally, find another, rebuild it nicely, and go from there.

so you wouldnt advise me to just buy another block and bolt it on? ive found a low mileage engine but i would prefer to keep cost down as im skint and just get the block?

id get your head off before you buy anything, then if the heads been smacked (highly likely) you can budget for a full motor. if your running a 1.4 why not find a 1.6 and upgrade?

its already a 1.6. i found an engine for £300 so not to bad, but like you say i will strip engine and check for damage then make a decision. will post a pic of the engine in a min, maybe someone will be able to tell what mods have been done as im not familiar with these engines
