OK, fresh off the back of my victory over Mowgli winning shed of the show at the nats with my shamefull swappage scheme Nova, I am seeting myself a wee task of tarting up the old girl for Billing & see how much of a change i can perform on her.

The aim is to spend literally nothing with the exception of a few service items it will need like wheel bearings & maybe a 5 speed gearbox to screw even more economy & cruising speed out of her.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Nova%20pictures/005.jpg

She isnt very photogenic.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/TAshowpics/national2010/PNGnats2010089.jpg

So aside from making it run a bit smoother, engine is fine now, I plan on getting the paint looking a bit loved again, filling & smoothing out the dents to the wing & rear quarters & maybe see what can be done with the bumpers. Novarally (colin) didnt appreciate my lack of serious fundage for some Red GTE items over the weekend, we'll see.

I quite like the look of that, a bit of a tidy up and it will look really good. The grille is a nice touch as it is a fine change from the usual.

Looks can be deceiving. lol

Me & Martin swapped our cars, hence an amusing thread title. So many people at the nats took the p*ss for swapping it.

Other plans include putting in a decent ICE setup to annoy admin with at shows... :p

It's fine, just a laughing point I think. Paint is matt Red tho, maybe past the point of saving. It just did 300 miles this weekend on less than £40 of juice without missing a beat.

Trust me, my old one was miles worse than yours Craig, fair enough i did mop mine with G3 then G10 and hand polished it afterwards but you can do it by hand aswell with the same/similar results....

rub strips off, sell the grill to fund some other bits bit of a polish up, some paint on the bumpers and your laughing!

I did something similar a few years back

spent about £150, got donated a few bits and ended up with this

glad you've decided to something with it mate, is looking at a bit sorry for itself.

IMO,

come round mine and get the GTE bumpers and grill,
rub them down and paint the in U-pol mid gray,
take off rub strips and flair decals,
fit your Irmscher twin spokes,
get plain number plates,
g3 the paint work, sort dents,

would make the world of difference and not cost alot.

tbh its only the rear bumper which is flaking paint IIRC, it had a newer front bumper, because i hated the flaky paint lol.

Not waxed it yet. Going to keep polishing it every night with Autoglym or MEGS until I get bored. Tonight was the 1st go at polishing it. Its had stage 1 Megs paint cleaner the last couple nights.

Looking forward to waxing it, then it might not be such a ball ache. As everynight it seems to fade again & needs a rinse & chamois off before going at it again. High maintainance!

I will crack on with the ICE wiring this week. Really wish I was going to PV tbh but I cant get time off from work. Isnt that what sub-bass is for? PVS.
[edit] The eagle eyed will notice I removed the irmscher reg plate surrounds. They can go on fleabay.

They suck! The car looks so much cleaner without them IMO. lol

As for the paint, I'll leave any more polishing until closer to Billing weekend, its just fading right under my nose anyway.....

I've just spent the last hour or so swapping some Luxe doorcards from my old mk2 into it. I gave them to Jack & he passed them back after not using them, so proper slut.ty parts! lol
Pics later. The cards match the SR seats a bit better than the tweed & are a more comforting velour instead of techno tweed & grey plasic, the door pockets are bigger & better on the mk2 items aswell. I found a pair of stainless sill trims with SR logo's in the shed form a £100 SR I broke years ago. Still using & finding bits off of it, they will tidy up the scuffed sills nicely.

My main aim this afternoon was to run the stereo cabling & give it a hoover out & clean whilst the seats & carpets were out, but I couldnt find my ICE fuse & distribution block I want to run, so then neglected to drill the hole for the cable in the bulkhead as I may end up running thinner power cable if I cant find the fuse, so that nailed that task. :(

Tyre shine?

For me the 3 spokes are a nice wheel, but with grey tyres they look crap!

craig green

Aye, they'll get tyre shine.

Grubby windows & dirty tyres can spoil the cleanest of cars..

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/project%20SPV/005-1.jpg

I found an inline fuse & seperate 2 way distribution block for the ICE on the bay, no bids so chucked one in with 1hr to go (was going out), but got outbid. Gutted would have been a cheap solution for the cabling Ahwell.

Here are some pics of the front seats I got a couple months ago. Rears need 60/40 brackets. The seats are utterly mint & are my fave factory, sporting Nova seats of all. These will be going into my turbo build when its complete.

Yeah the cards are far more pleasing on the eye when your in the driving seat. The doors sound so much more solid to close now aswell, oddly. Mk2 win I guess.

I noticed the old seat belt conveniently covering the drivers bolster in the pic. I'll shoot another of the drivers bolster for proof.

No, its no different to a GSi or SRi setup, cloth colours aside.

Thanks for the comments guys, the seats are indeed lush. Shame the drivers is getting a bit grubby with stains from the leaky sunroof, nothing a wet vac wont sort.

I have all the carpets & seats out, the ICE cabling is being laid under the carpet accross the foor pan. I have drilled & grommeted the firewall for the +ve cable to run into the battery tray.

Obviously I have hoovered out the floor area. I'm 3p up & my hands are black!!

Thank god I dont have that intermittent dash speaker to put up with anymore. I've just been out tweaking the crossover & HU settings. All is well listening to Danny Byrd's Hospital mix. :)

In light of me not bothering to suffer driving the 1.2 all the way to Billing, this project is semi failed, however I have got some plans afoot to keep on tidying up the old girl. After changing the NSf wheel bearing, the car no longer sounds like it has a swarm of angry bees in what I thought was the gearbox (thanks Jack for the description). It feels a million times smoother now & the to be fair the hub & bearing were rough as fook when I removed it.

Plans are for a pikey style home respray maybe with new wings & tailgate in the factory colour & some banded steels perhaps.

lets hope I keep the motivation anyway!

John

Yes John PM me about banding or whatever. I didnt realise you had any.

No 1600 in this one. I have another shell for that if it ever happens. I have been dreaming of other cars (Honda Prelude maybe) but I think I'll make something nice of this on the cheap & keep it. It is a pretty good Nova as it happens, I'm starting to realise. That knackered wheel bearing really made everything upfront feel shot to bits. Such a smooth drive now.

OK. This afternoon's mincing.
I went around to my folks as they have a large drive with mains elec nearby etc & they were away at Anglesey for a track day/weekend. So I was able to crack on without disturbance.

The plan was to fill the dent(s) in the rear quarters. I tackled the shallow one on the off side which was on the car when I got it.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/project%20SPV/001.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/project%20SPV/002.jpg

Getting the area down to bare metal. Took too long with my palm sander & prolly the wrong grade abrasives (120 grit). Maybe just not suited to car work I dunno.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/project%20SPV/009.jpg

I also figured that whilst here I'll try a couple rust patches on the door as no doubt it shouldnt take too much longer mixing filler & sanding it all together.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/project%20SPV/016.jpg

It's been a while since I mixed any filler & I think I got the hardener ratio a bit wrong & it took ages to 'go off'. I carried on though & began sanding. Again fookin hard work with the wrong materials & a small sander.
I put on a second layer of filler which went off in a few mins & sanded that back. Thats as far as I got as I spent most of the afternoon doing it. I'm not all that happy so far, but it still needs more filler so it's not finished. I think I just expected to maybe have one side done & I havent completed it yet. Hay ho.

I have sprayed a quick rough coat of red over the bare metal etc & it looks awfull & has highlighted where more filler needs to go.

lol @ taking 4 hours to do what a bodyshop would do in 30 mins....

Against the guidance in the filler instructions then, but yeah your prolly right. Like I say, it was hard work doing the sanding, it seemed so slow going.

MK999
18-07-10, 06:42 PM
You want it thin enough that it's quick/easy to sand back but thick enough to actually have the freedom to do that, putting it in too thick and sanding it back by hand is definitely not fun lol

Benn
18-07-10, 07:33 PM
Does it say do it thinly then?

You need to fill the dent, not semi fill it. So filling it a little over give you enough to sand it back and get it flat.

craig green
18-07-10, 07:43 PM
Ahh I figured build it up. It does say not to 'over fill' it though.

Maybe I'll get the deeper dent right on the other side.

err an afternoon so far. Would have been quicker with some coarser grade sanding pads as it took far too long getting to bare metal.

Southie
23-07-10, 05:25 PM
mmm I've never done any body work and the prospect scares me a little especially with it having 24 year old paint and also being metallic, might send it to a bodyshop the more I think about it.

craig green
23-07-10, 05:34 PM
The fact its 24yrs old should put you off spending on it.

I've never done any body work either, played with filler onmy shorty mirrors but not on a car panel. I may have more updates after this weekend anyway as the side I started needs another skim & might get chance to attack the other side which is a bigger dent/proper battle scar.

No didnt brim it, far from it. It did stink of fuel when I went to nats with the most fuel its ever had in my ownership, but wasnt leaking. Must need new breather pipes too.

Thats waht I am kinda getting at, much of the floor pan is bare metal. I really need to do something with it ASAP if its going to last. I think one of the rear spring saddles may be hiding a hole also.

Wire wheel, red oxide & some gravi-guard required I reckon. :(

i welded the rear turrets, and didnt notice the spring mounts showing any signs of rust.

Thanks for the offer Si. Kinda the opposite of my working pattern this week. Not much earlky on & full on towards end of week/weekend..

Anyhoo.

Filler work on the rear quarters/arches continues.

I thought I was pretty much done on the near side. So after some final sanding & mincing I wanted to blow some primer over the repair to cover the bit of bare metal & seal the filler against the elements. I think this was Monday night & the wind had got right up, not ideal for spraying. So as I dont have a garage for this sort of thing all I could think of was the local multi-storey carpark (empty I might add). So I headed up there with some newspaper & my can of primer.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/project%20SPV/005-3.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/project%20SPV/007-2.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/project%20SPV/003-2.jpg

I thought it was looking pretty good, but the next day I spotted loads more imperfections now it had a uniform coat of colour on it. I can even detect the uneven surface easier with the paint on it. More sanding!!

I also moved onto the off-side repair on Tuesday evening. This was the bigger dent caused by a road rage incident between me & a van driver (thats another story).

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/project%20SPV/005-2.jpg

Anyway. I used a coarser grade of sanding pad to get through the paint much quicker this time. Once the area was bared, I put in a generous skim of filler, thanks to advice from Benn etc as I think I was a bit shy with it on the other side.

(note; the gay FLAIR decals have gone!) :)

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/project%20SPV/008-2.jpg

I've just spent the morning sanding it down & adding extra skims of filler here & there where needed. I think its nearly upto the stage of needing some Primer to once again highlight the actual surface I am playing with.

No pics ( it did happen) but she had a new fr & centre exhaust sections today. It started blowing a little last week & developed into a full blown gypsy roar on Saturday. The front pipe rusted & nearly snapped off where it enters the centre section. The remaining part of fr pipe inside the centre section was seized inside, so needed both bits. Thats a full new exhaust in last 6 months.

All quiet now, just needs a better looking tail pipe weldding onto the rear box & I'll be happy tbh. I like the semi upswept mk1 Golf style exits.

I also gave her an oil & filter change a week or so ago. Long overdue I thought, but it doesnt feel any smoother like oil changes often do, so my guess is it wasnt crying out for it. No biggie, peace of mind & all that.

Next job might be to get the alternator reconditioned as it sounds pretty dry. I've noticed on the digi-gash it only charges over 12v when revved above idle after a cold start, so it must be getting tired. New belt when that happens too. Being my daily transport though I might need a day or so booked off work to do this. I'd sooner get our battery centre to strip & fix my alt than pay for a new unit.

If I can be bothered I'll be lobbing more filler into a couple more dents at some point.

I picked up a GTE/SR grille of here last week. Still looking for 2 good mk1 wings btw!

Back box failed back in May. It's another!

I'm happy to maintain it on a budget. I rely on it for work. MOT is looming & I know it needs a bit of work for that, so I have these things in mind now. Fingers crossed, or if you see it being 'broken for spares' this time next month, you'll know why!

Its got a bit of a flat spot when you get back on the throttle, exiting corners etc (since I got it) so at some stage the carb might get stripped, likewise I think it needs a look at, check ign etc. I'm pretty sure theres a few bhp to be found. It pinks a bit etc & I wouldnt be surprised if its a bit rich, idle could be a tad lower.
