I bought sum 14" gsi alloys last nite an intend to get tyres put on em today an fit them. The wheels on the car at the moment are 13" and the tyre is about 4"thick. Does the combined total of the new tyre and wheel have to be equal to the old total? would the extra inch mean i have to change anything on my car (speedo?). I dunno much about wheels an tyres, so go easy on me :p

If you put bigger wheels on then go smaller on the profile. This will keep the rolling diameter the same. An extra inch or so wont make that much difference to your speedo. I am sur people with 18" haven't had their speedo re-calibrated. Tyres for 14" wheels off a nova will be about 165/60/R14 or something like that i think.

They should be quiet cheap as nornal, about ?30 each for a decent one. If you go lower profile agin it might upset the handling and be a bumpy ride. I am not sure how wide you can go on standard 14" alloys.

You might get away with a 185/60/R14 but i would seek a second opinion before you buy some cos they might not fit on the rim and effect the handling in a bad way.

The standard tyre on a 14" sr rim is 175/65/R14

you will be best off getting 185/60's and they cost around ?25-?30 each. i used these on my sr and then sr and they work fine (gsi alloys). with 60 profile your speedo shud be more than accurate enough (not that nova speedos are at all accurate ;) )

i've foned around, an been advised by two garages to get 165/65/14. One said that the 175 would be bigger than the standard wheel an tyre, therefore worse. Car shack said they can do the 175's t-rated? for cheaper. am i just best gettin the 165?

PS what is the tread depth on new tyres?

very strange, most people i know have 185's pn gsi alloys. suppose its wotever the garage has in depending on what they tell u ;)

Depth of tread on new tyres depends on how wide they are, what make and what tread pattern etc etc. I dont think there is a set standard.

Standard size was 165/65/R14 79T - My spare was the same from when it was new.

You can pick up new tyres for about ?18, Goodyears from ?28 and the top whack are Mitchilin XT1's from about ?40

i run 185/60 14 A539 yokos, ?38 a corner but hey are soft compound so only 9000miles per set of 4  (9000miles = 2 months for me :o )

sr's came with 165's
gsi/gte came with 175's

my sgi ones were 165 65 r14's

Was gpoing to fit 185's but would have needed to get my right rear arch rolled.

Look nice n phat though from the rear.

175's are good = extra inch width makes all the diff!

Enjoy

I run 185/60/14 's on my GSI alloys and i've never had a problem with rear arch rubbing and i'm on a 60mm drop.

Although the front ones wear real quick cause of the camber!
