some bellend has bid on them?
Given that they've snapped at the end of the sleeve how are you going to weld and re-sleeve them to make them useable again

And the other half can be slid down the side of your seat ready to smash the skull of any potential car thieves :)

ok, basic engineering lesson.....
cutting 2 hardened shafts, then sliding a mild steel sleeve over the 2 bits & welding is possibly the worst way humanly possible of joining the 2 shafts together.
if the 2 halves were cut to length, and the cut ends vee'd (like a pencil) then the whole lot held in a rotating jig and welded properly, then ground back & balanced, then it would be ok.

thats all well, but im guessing they have put the join in the middle of the sleve, so wy has it snapped on the outside of the join.
is this because there was alot of heat in there, making it more brittle...

martin, basically, any part of what was done to those shafts was one almighty bodge. they most likely welded the 2 halves together then slid the sleeve on. so it will have weakened the whole section.

nope. muzzy has the best answer, sorry matt

The large sleeve in the middle creates a geometric stress concentration at the join, the larger diameter bit doesn't twist at all so it passes all of the stress from this area into the nearest weaker point, it's pretty much the same as those little V's in chocolate bar wrappers that make them easy to tear. Also if it wasn't heat treated after welding the material at that point will be hardened which makes it more brittle and more likely to snap than twist.

Did a snapped, rusty set of suspect quality shafts really deserve a 4 page thread?

Yes, why not?
Not like png is slowing down the internetzzzlol
lol. If said eBay bidder is so savvy that he is bidding on them for scrap or just for the short spare then why bid days in advance? Muppet.
My last eBay victory came ONE second before the bell.
L14MNP, my point was to make sure that anyone i know doesn't buy such shoddy stuff & then try to fit it. there are a lot of people who just don't get the technical grounding that others do. knowing what is not worth buying is going to help

I have seen hollow conversion shafts before, there meant to twist, and twist (spring) back etc, but im not sure they would work to well..

Fairly standard motorsport practice, the inner 1/2 of the shaft contributes around 1/4 to the strength, ARBs are generally hollow for the same reason :thumb:

Ah, well Ive no idea if they were used, as Neil who had isachunt nova 2.0 8v had them, and fitted that into a corsa.

SO is there such a thing as a set of HIGH quality snapped shafts? lol
I don't think I said there was, however I bet there is.
Everything has it's breaking point if you take the p!ss. lol

Lets give you a rally car with some trick carbon driveshaft and some bombproof conrods and find out lol
No, I was pointing out Limps description as being 'suspect quality' and 'snapped'.
I was just wondering why the quality was an issue when they were in two pieces lol
Hmm. Could buy them and use as physical bansticks at shows.
