an aftermarket gauge wouldnt solve your problem anyway, it would still require an earth from your coil. check for a wire from coil to back of rev counter or run a new one, see if it works then

What engine do you have, what clocks do you have, is it the original engine for the car, more info is needed!

Coil wire has to go on the neg side, Depending on the coil it depends where its marked.

If its a 1.2 or with the same coil, it should be the one nearest the bulkhead at the bottom.

Umm that would say to me bottom left, its not its bottom right as you look at the plug from the back, on a 1.2 carb its the only one that doesnt have a wire going into it!

edit, your right, just checked.

Bottom right would be the right one, iirc shouldnt have a wire on it eather.

As you look at the coil in that pic you want the wire running from the bottom right tab, thats your rev counter feed, and you look to have a burned out strip on the back of your clocks unless its just light reflection there, as you look at the back of your clocks, tap the feed for your rev counter into the top left pin iirc, if this doesnt get it working then your best bet is to try a new set of clocks/rev counter.

Sure mine had something on the back you could slide a spade type crimp on.
