Tried looking for 'Cat D Write Off' threads but the search yielded nothing...

What's the crack with Cat D write off's then?

I understand this means the car has had some form of light body repair work or it has been stolen and recovered but apart from this are there any other serious issues associated with Cat D's i.e insurance cover?

Has anyone had experience with a Cat D car? Go for it or Avoid?

I'm going to look at a local car tomorrow that is a Cat D which has had a 'full ispection' carried out by the dealer and from the pic's it looks to be in superb condition at what seems to be a pretty reasonable price. Not sure exactly what the damage has been with it but that's what I'll looking to find out tomorrow.

Cheers.

my first nova was a cat D, it needed a lock set. imo theres nothing wrong with buying a cat d aslong as you know what the damage was/is, and there usually worth less after they have been repaird.

if memory serves correct...cat d is classed as "beyond economical repair" which i think is a % of the cars value...

such as nova crashes, headlight and indicator broken, cars value £100 to fix it is £80 it will be a write off.

had a few cat c's and cat d's that ive bought and fixed and sold. there is no rules regarding damage and class, so a cat c may need less than a cat d sometimes. basic rule of thumb is, anything over £500 is a cat c less is a d. ( i used to be an insurance assesor) tho i have seen a corrsa c sri be classed a s a cat c with a snapped headlight bracket, and a merc slk be a cat b for a dented wing....

Fairdoo's, doesn't sound too serious then.

I know the car will be worth less when I come to sell but I won't of paid top dollar for it in the first place so there's no real financial risk. I need to find out exactly what it's history is first though I guess.

Cat D's dont need VIC checks.

Ive owned loads, what exactly do you want to know??

EDIT: Cat D can be anything from from stolen recovery, to minimal damage (not necessarily bodywork!) even repossesions can be put on a Cat D if the debtor cant track down the vehicle when they try an repo it.

when i bought my nova it was/is a cat d the guy i bought it off dealt in insurance write off's he said he'd not even touched it (which i believe) it had been bumped from behind all he did was just put it through a VIC check,it passed and he sold it.you can't even tell unless you look at the boot floor and you see the tiny crease's.

Ive had both C's & D's. Bought to strip & sell, an also bought to repair.

If your not bothered about driving a motor that you know has been in a shunt, or stolen recovered, then its potentially an easy way to get your hands on some top notch machinery for a decent price if your not scared of a little elbow grease & leg work.

To add, anyone else see the Cat C repaired Escort Cosworth Lux sell on eBay the other night for £6350?
