project A series this will be picked up next week sometime, (still need to officially sort the trailer etc)
plans at first is to do the structural welding asap, get it mot'd etc and drive it as a running restorationm always wanted one so i thought sod it with some of the funds from the tracker sale. got chatting to john with a stall at billing and went to high wycombe on monday to see the beast and she was in better condition than i was expecting for a car built in 1971-2, it has not been on the road for 21 years!

already got hold of this ultra rare piece of manta history, broadspeed front spoiler!! original kit not a FB copy from germany

brand spanking new chassis rails and sill plates, saves a lot of hassle in fabrication

no work today as the old boy had to have an operation so amongst all sorts of jobs i decided to be a tart and make a new key for the A,

start with raw ally block and fashion opel lighting strike by hand and polish the nuts out of it......

more goodies for the build now picked up an axle, 1030 volvo 240, not sure on the ratios will have to some measuring. will hopefully be more up to the job than the standard jobbie, it has already been stripped and started to 4 link, bu this may go in favour of the manta spring cups ,live axlle, as i dont want to mess too much with the manta floor pan

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/DSC00381.jpg?t=1251576215

the chosen powerplant, got this for good money and its all there, turbo is sound, oil good, looks pretty honest, will give it a go over though for peace of mind, right nightmare trying to move it from a relatives where it was dropped off to my garage with gastric flu and the squits lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/DSC00382.jpg?t=1251576506

still need to sort gearbox, i can have an omega 2 ltr box for 40 quid, but not sure, ive not heard of anyone trashing omega boxes

well i couldnt resist, went and took the flywheel off and robbed the flywheel and clutch from xe bottom end i need to get rid of...

saabf/wheel off...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/DSC00385.jpg?t=1251649547

do the bolt holes match......no in a word. not far out but dont line up and the centre hole of the xe flyhweel is too large, but the xe clutch friction plate is a spot on match, so maybe will work that way if splines are the same on the r28 box or is it vaux turbo friction plate i need to use??
the saab f/wheel is afir bit thicker than the xe one so juts out more but not sure if enough for r28 as johnny has said i may have a issue there.

also looking at the wiring loom on the lump looks pretty hassle free as it has its own loom rather than being incorporated into full car loom, which i have anyway even the abs ecu etc.

cool LET friction plate then it is, but im surethe saab one will mate up, we shall see this evening.

another new bit sourced FMIC, courtesy of Anthony on here, should be arriving soon

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v486/Anthony16V/DSCF2609.jpg

righty picked this beaut up to move the manta to my workshop, also wouldnt mind hiring it out to peeps on here, if that dont work out then flog it on again.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/DSC00390.jpg?t=1252346234

aso sorted the shifter on the omega box, combination of omega parts and manta original, bit of cutting....welding...

got half a day on her today, quie time consuming stuff restoration, and this before i even get modifying, still very rewarding...

got panels back from blasters too, bonnet and boot will need lots of work to get them flsat again, aswith the heat generated from the blasting made them ripple a fair bit,at least they are rust free!

i have finished to repair work to one wing now, which requires filling etc when on car for paint, made a start on drivers side but is more rotten but shouldnt take as long.

also a new pair of sills have arrived from germany to make life easier im just going to replace as a whole rather than try to use fro patching etc.

got some box steel today aswell for fabricating the rollover jig so ic an safely work on the underside, im not welding on my back again too risky and messy

righty picked up the new timing bits chains, sprockets, guides etc, all new so can build the engine up over the weekend, also gav has come up trumps with the manifold bits which will hopefully be with me for the weekend too so can start mocking up.

been working on the inlet too, put some studs in to get some port matching done and open up slightly and smooth out casting marks

some goodies...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/BfUMJQB2kKGrHqMH-CUErgKLYMVTBLClNNp.jpg?t=1259700710

i have purchased stack adapter to space the turbo off the manifold ive completed (will do pics soon) and enable external wastegate which has been sorted from the wonderful man at JADE motorsport, i was going to use a t25 style turbo but got the bargain turbo so need to adapt it, works out pretty handy in the end. ill have to probably lop off the 38mm wastegate flange from the adapter and weld it on the long face so it projects away from the engine then run tubing to suitable position near turbo and give ebough room for downpipe.

flange for 3" downpipe and exhaust system, im going to gatehr the parts for that gradually

pics of progress, got another afternoon in today got most of the rear valance rebuilt, had to strip it right back and make a new inner and outer! also cut the spare wheel well out as it was holed but dont like the look either, gave me chance start work on other side of car too, the beginnings of the rear corner boxing taking shape, so a good base to weld to, really pleased with the outcome

20 quid well happy, ive got it all stripped down (took over an hour!! bloody outer cv's!!) and have started lopping it up and considering my plans as to how it it will mounted, im pretty settled on using the beam and its inner brackets in between the manat original chassis rails and set into the floor with sheet metal floor also seamed in to give it good solid mounting, then the outer brackets on the beam will be utilised ontot the original manta chassi rails, i need to be really careful with it so as not introduce some ridiculous camber angle as all the trailing arm mounts are at angle and not a flat plain, more of that once ive got it there abouts, i was sitting on my little blue chair for nearly 2 hours trying to work out how to mount it as its not as straight forward as i was hoping as i want a tidy looking job too.

E28 LSD diff from M535i

it ahs a speed senor pickup which will be useful for the trionic mangement and clocks etc, im hoping the 325 halfshafts will bolt straight on as there seems to a bit of conflicting info on beemer forums, ill just have to see for myself, hopefully tomorrow or definately sat. no one is getting in the way of me working on the manta saturday!!

couple of pics, not done much but coul with some ideas too as to how i could dial out the camber from the arms being created, im thinking of making new brackets for the arms with the outer one bringing the arm further away from the chassis thus bringing the top of the wheel out to counteract the neagtive camber, i will need som form of adjustment too, thinking laong the line of elongating the mounting holes and using some form of eccentric bolt, rather like vw golf front strut bolts for adjustinmg camber,

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/manta%20a%20series/100_1431.jpg?t=1266090536

ive welded on a platform here for outer bracket to sit on, 3mm plate so plenty strong!

finished the fron valance today, tacked up then fully tacked by welding in one spot then another to distribute the heat to prevent it warping too badly out of shape, gave it a good linish with a sanding pad on the grinder and then a skim of filler, also started mocking up the front airdam/splitter, trying something new with muscle car influence.

well monumental day today, engine in ready for moutns to be made etc!!!!! only spent 4 hours on her as had to screed a floor this morning, but any progress is good, so more chopping ...........

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/manta%20a%20series/DSCF1074.jpg?t=1271522432
subframe slung back on, block hangin ready

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/manta%20a%20series/DSCF1075.jpg?t=1271522531
block in, so decided to lop out more metal lol, i knew the trans tunnel would never be big enough so marked up where i wanted to cut and let the sparks fly!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/manta%20a%20series/DSCF1076.jpg?t=1271522608
more scrap!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/manta%20a%20series/DSCF1077.jpg?t=1271522643
plate for nearside engine mount, nice thick plate steel

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/manta%20a%20series/DSCF1078.jpg?t=1271522703
omega box in, where ive cut the tunnel out has suited me fine first time, im allowing a little more room for when i eventually build the bellhousing to suite a bmw box in the future

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/manta%20a%20series/DSCF1079.jpg?t=1271522793
as can be seen im going to have to make up some lowering blocks for the ARB as it fouls the box considerably, handy it being there for now to hold the box up!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/manta%20a%20series/DSCF1080.jpg?t=1271522860
fitted first time, made bolt holes slightly larger but more luck than anything

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/manta%20a%20series/DSCF1081.jpg?t=1271522917
placed the top half of the engine on to check measuremtns for bonnet clearance, its going to be tight, may have to bulge the bonnet or notch out the subfame a touch, as space is tight escpecially for the sump, which is more important than asthetics so if it is easier to just fabricate a bulge in the bonnet then so be it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/manta%20a%20series/DSCF1082-1.jpg?t=1271523059
plenty of room either side, more than i had bargained for hence the tight ramshorn turbo manifold

no pics again sorry!!

but i have now sorted the steering pretty much, have ditched the manta column in favour of a corsa manual one, as it has 2 stalks! as oposed to the lonely manta one, as im updating the wiring with a new loom and dash etc, also like the idea of some billet TVR style stalks. the corsa one bolts straight in ont he two upper mounts, need to make a bracket for the lower one, only problem i had was the extra universal joint needed supporting, solution........ bit of old trolley jack handle to extend the joint and v6 veccy stub driveshaft support bearing, had to sleeve the bearing a few times as the steering shaft was a lot smaller than the bearing opening, aslo has two bolt lugs for fixing to the bulkead. but really happy with that outcome, cheers olly for doanting the bearing.

today popped down unit after work to drop some stuff off, decided to have a bash at the TIG, ended up welding the inlet manifold end cap, i think i will get to grips with some decent welding quicker than i thought, not too bad once you get a 'fee'l for it.

On a side note, it wasn't till I was half way through reading this project and noticed where you lived... Put 2 and 2 together and relaised I've met you! I bought a c20XE rocker cover off you, remembered you talking about the A project them.

Good luck with it all!

nice nice matey whats the plans for this then??

well, it needs a another bootlid as some nob reversed a truck into it! luckily only damaged the tailgate, bit pissed off as its mint had new paint and vinyl, oh well, so thats to sort out, new rear arch paels, doors are mint still, needs a blow over on roof, doors and quarters, its ahd neww wings, bonnet blown over bumper painted etc, interior is mint, needs new suspension as its got a crappy gmax kit.
may do a small block 16v conversion, its got an 8v gte lump in it atmo, nippy but no record breaker lol

Re: project A series

got the brackets tacked up today for the trailing arms final position, so i could start looking how to mount the diff, any ideas feel free to suggest guys. think i may use 2 rails either eide of the diff from the bmw subframe to the cross piece i welded in the boot, very strong anchors then, some tabs to bolt the diff to.

Re: project A series

seeing as im not working for unforseen circumstances the next few days id thought id update, no pics still no camera!
ive done what i set out to do in the sketch, and most of the sheet metal has now been welded in too, need to fab a removable cover for the floor to access the diff mounts, pretty easy job. also a rear mount for the diff needs thinking about,

ive cutout the whole trans tunnel lol! as the engine has been mounted high and clear as has the diff so i can run the car quite low, the prop would never fit. so more wlding! love it

righty, a little progress at last, dragged myself up the unit for some 'paul' time.

lifted out the engine and subframe, diff, trailing arms and all the other crap that was in the shell. then single handed got it up on the rollover jig, tbh was pretty easy having done it several times now, and the shell weighs buggerall.
