Hi,
I bought a new steering wheel for my GSi yesterday and i took off the horn cover and removed the nut and the little washer thing but could not get the bast**d off. I tried hammering the center part to get it off but it would not come off even with 3 lads pulling it!!!!
Is there a way of getting it off without buying the tool?????
Also I have a lot of play with the rack itself where it moves about a inch each side without moving the wheels and its nasty anyone had that probelm before?????
Please help all you gurus
Cheers

Yeah it is a bast*rd to get off. Try some releasing lubricant and just general wiggling and pulling! Keep the nut on though cos you dont want it flying off when it finally gives up. I have a set of three and two leged pulleys and couldn't get them in so went back to hitting and pulling!
It wont do the stearing rack any good hitting it with a hammer to get the wheel off, but it should get it off in the end. If your going to get a new rack then it doesn't matter if you wack it.
Not a lot of help but most people have this problem!

yeha its a poo to get off. put yer seat right back and your feet in the foot well and lift yourself off the floor by pulling on the wheel. then just rock side to side. WD 40 helps. and leave the nut on a wee bit other wise you and the wheel fly back wards.
Take it to a garage? Surely all this force can't be good on your steering coloumn?

the rack itself isnt so bad, i think 1 or 2 small nuts near the bottom and 1 nut above the ignition barrel, however you need to knock a pin out with a hammer+chisel and replace it with a screw.
you will see what i mean if u do it
a new coloumn cost me ?15 and was a shed load better
If you twat the hell out of the column it can colapse the top bearing so be carefull. Slacken off the nut and undo it a few turns. Wedge your knees under the wheel and then with a soft mallet (copper hide one is best) tap the top of the column to release it. Then as mentioned give it a wiggle

I presume ya mean the column dicko? :)
And yes it has one bolt at the bottom, one beside the air duct, and two near the ignition barrel. one of the ones near the barrel is a break nut and has the be chiselled off and replaced with a bolt.
Thats just in case you make a fuck of the column  and its not too hard to do either
