View Full Version : Nova with subaru gear, any one done it ?

After a chat and bit of a laugh me and a mate was talking about how if we had a Subaru shell we could basically build another one up with all the spares he has, then my mind went off on one with maybe a crazy idea,
nova running on Subaru running gear and engine, i have seen cossie and even calibra threads with nova slapped on top
any one think its worth looking into ? problems and anything else.....

it has crossed my mind but i dont think anyone has done it. with calibra conversion its easier as you just add the transfer box to the gearbox and send a shaft down and do some mods to the back to hold a rear diff and such, but the cossie was the old lob the top off the cossie and whack a nova ontop, but with a subaru Getting a flat four in is going to something special!
Edit: just read my comment and realised how easy i made the calibra and cossie one sound. They arnt easy, so the subaru one is going to be a get the proper equipment out job or your going to kill yourself.
Any engine can be used with a little ingenuity. ;) Although why you'd pick a scooby lump is beyond me.

was an idea to be a bit different, 4x4 and the scooby rumble and some stuff are there waiting, my nova needs fair bit of cutting and welding/new front end anyway so its time to think do i go same as plenty of others and not be much different (wide-arched stripped out track) or something a little extra about it.

Gay. All that effort & it'd probably do equal lap times to a diff'd, smallblock :d Nova on slicks anyway.

I'd say give it a shot seen as you have all the stuff there. Personally, I'd rather keep the Impreza stuff in and on the Impreza.

Yes i can read and i read it as you intended. I apreciate that you didnt realise how easy you made it sound but the reason i have reacted the way i did is because i dont feel that you realy fully understand exactly whats required to make it work.
i didnt mean it to come across as bitchy as it proberly did mate but i see threads like these atleast once a month and i usualy ignore them rather than get plauged with questions that i have already anwsered a million times already. It does get my back up some times when people say you can put this in that or fit that to this or another faivorite is will a such and such fit a such and such
The anwser is yes how much work is envolved is another question anything is possable when it comes to building cars your only limits are budget skills dedication and imagination
back on topic if you want to have a go mate go for it dont let anybody tell you it cant be done be be warned do your research and make sure you fully understand exactly what your about to let yourself in for have a look at my thread in my link if you want an idea of the exstent of work that would be required
tbh he's perfectly correct in what he's said, given the limited mods you need to do the front end, engine mounting, wiring, etc, it is easier with calibra parts, same as scaling the eiger is easier than the everest. He doesn't actually state that it's easy.

apart from the actual engine mountings very similar structural work would be required wheather your fitting calibra evo or pulsar running gear doesnt matter how you sugar coat it and or what you use
completly re structuring the bulk head relocating and modifing steering components and engineering a new forward floor rear subframe assembaly and so on and. for your average person or general fitter this sort of work isnt easy
the only reason i considered taking it on isnt because of my mechanical knowledge its because im a welder fabricator and structural engineer by trade it takes abit more than chop that here put that there when you start taking in to acount acting forces stress points ect
and dont take offence but by saying that only limited mods would be required for the front end shows exactly what i have said about people commenting who realy havent exsperienced it first hand as it realy isnt simple at all.
in all fairness it would have been easier to use something like a permenent 4x4 setup such as a pulsar engine and running gear but thats not what mine was about
i havnt ment to try and get anyones back up over this but it realy bugs me when people comment and realy have no idea how much work is envolved or more to the point dont necessarily fully understand the ins and outs of it and realise theres abit more to it than just make some mouts fab a tunnel fit a rear end and thats it

I too think your reacting the wrong way, just because someone says its easier to do a calibra 4x4 it doesn't mean its going to be easy at all, its just easier compared to whatever your comparing it to
is it easier to fit a calibra 4x4 setup than an impreza setup? because based on that question alone someones argument will be invalid
any prat can stick an engine into a bay, just ebay search projects, to actually fit a complete running gear in takes a hell of a lot of hours of though before the grinder comes out. and fitting the engine & box & making it run is only the start.... actually getting drive to all 4 wheels, and then making it handle is the hard bit, then once you get it all in, then there is the matter of making it all safe, tidy & legal enough to get it mot'd or allowed to go on a track......
it could be done, but it won't be easy, as ste's thread shows....

I read and i laughed and thought you should use a CP9A 5/6 Rs varient Non AYC
Much stronger, would cost less to tune upto 350/350 and bought salvage they would only set you back around 5k.
But in total honesty the nova shell/chassis is not upto the torque or conering forces. Jesus it costs a fair whack to get a XE to handle properly let along some cocked up 4x4 effort.
Good luck with your project if you decide to go ahead with it then get it on track and im sure one of the "track boys" will make you cry lol.

I agree with ste on this theres a hell of alot of work involved in something like this alot more than you would first antisipate.
I own a triumph spitfire i would like to put a rover v8 in there but i need to figure out what diff to use, then what way to make the rear chassis hold suspension, diff and other parts with it bein all alighned correct.
The main reason im worried about suspension is because it has a leaf spring goin across the top of the axel, rather than havin 2 springs goin front to back. So would mean fabricating new mounts and such like to a good standard ie strenght and handling.
Iv been roughly thinkin about this for the last 6 months, drawn a few designs but the nova's taken up the time first lol.

Stags are ****e, the most porely designed engine on the earth which is why people put ford v6 or rover v8s in them.

for god's sake just use gt6 stuff, then forget the rover v8 & fit a triumph straight 6.... you even use the gt6 bonnet too.... or a ford zetec or similar. the rover v8 will be too wide for the front suspension.

i have actually looked into the subaru running gear and think that part is very viable, using the subaru engine however you simperly have no where near enough space in the front of a nova

and i knew one of the painters that was involved and they do most of them all at the same time, some taking upto 5months,

Gt6 stuff is no good. Makes the front to heavy.
Rover v8 fits straight in mate seen it been done before the only mod needed is to cut a bit of the bulkhead away so the rocker covers dont mash into it, but as i said the diff is the weak link.
Tbh im in 2 minds iv got a 2lr 8v sat in my shed that could be used or i get a v8 an use that.

i know it wont be easy or an over night thing, i want to try it as iv nothing really to loose and if i fail (and im man enough to admit its likely) at least i had the balls to try.
i know there is loads to think about and research but they has to be a start and asking if its been done, worth doing, ways of doing and problems likely to come across and helpfull topics/threads i havent yet come across that may be a good read is the start of some research, im always looking at threads like ste porters and loads of others on a few sites.
there are also some people who seem to think i mean just fit a scooby lump like you would with some sort of c20let conversion.. no i do mean the lot.
some of you may know how the scooby gear bolts together may understand a bit better and in thoery like burgo said is viable as they are depending on sizes and finding ways to fit.
i know i might have to (and dont mind) chopping most of the inside out and maybe even front end off and start again with box/tubing maybe even bits off scooby floorpan/turrets and tunnel with plenty of work, welding and strengthening.
if i go ahead with it i will try get some ideas and maybe plans/drawings up for people to say no that wont work or this way might be better.

in the end, they made them fit std. doors & it looked shyte, but john cleland made his name in it.... i saw it race once, and it was as fast as it looked, there was a stars & stripes manta 400 (chevy v8) too, they raced for an hour with a driver change, & it was fantastic racing

i know you wernt really trying to offend and i was just teasing :d. dont worry ive been through your thread and i know it isnt easy. (in the slightest) that why i put the edit in two seconds after i read my post, looking at how easy i made it sound. personally i dont think i got the patience just known the rough outlines of what would need to be done, but im a mechanic not an engineer. though maybe someday

So far i have found out its been done to civic, couple of escorts and a mk1 golf, probably loads more around who knows.
they seem to be near on full floor pan swap and rear turrets replaced with the scooby turrets.
