all i keep hearing is trouble with these 1.8t engines, look at bazil's thread......
are they really that bad???? tbh if the complete electrical system can be swapped & any different manifolds etc, it should be fine, do you have the old engine?

Its people putting K&N style cone filters on them that kill them, same with BMW's. The NEED to run on Fully synth, basic service interval is 9k miles if driven "averagly", if your Larry Leadfoot obviously service it sooner. There is a known problem on the early engines with faulty coil packs. Oil caked air filters kill the air flow sensor ricky tick.
oh, and the fact that all vag engines have toffee water pumps too

yh the engine is still in the car but there is water in the oil

Untrue actually, its because people put the wrong oil in without knowing ;) common problem.
The 1.8T will take 400bhp+ peice of pish, just if its badly looked after then premature death is afoot :( altho they are prone to oil sludgness build up in the pick up pipe aswell. But thats easily fixed by any DIY mechy owner.
wrong oils mean more friction and higher temps in the water which weakens the plastic blades and they break, or did you read water as oil? lol

one of our workers has skoda octavias & changes them regularly, and they all get dealer serviced & they have all had pump failures.
john H serviced my touran & he stuck a pump in to go with the cambelt..........
i go from experience only on VAG stuff

Mike FAIL lol thought it said Oil Pump lol
On the subject of Audi Oil Pumps tho, see here (http://www.audi-forums.com/b6-forum/44086-i-8-t-oil-pressure-light.html).

an engine gets up to temperature & stays there. thats what the cooling system does......... having some plinky plastic impellor on a metal shaft and making it spin at several thousand rpm is going to kill it!!! oh, and cold coolant is thicker than hot coolant..

The 1.8T is fine if looked after and serviced properly.
Mines on 110k and never missed a beat.
They can run on semi-synthetic or fully synthetic oil.
Replacement engines aren't cheap so pays to keep them in good working order.

I thought they were pretty strong, however knowing VAG, there will be subtle differences between models.
So long as you have your engine to hand to donate external parts & cross reference any differences.
A mate is using an early A4 20vT to put in a mk1 Golf build with a Rotrex. Its thrown up a few block issues though, but he chose this engine as it has superior head ports apparently.
Make sure you get the right engine code. if it's got oil in the coolant (or vice versa) Surely it only needs the gasket/oil cooler doing?
There are many differences in the 1.8t from start to finish and across the brand (seat/audi/vw/seat)

Does it run? got oil pressure?
my s3 is the 210 bhp apy engine i dont know about internals but the inlet and exhaust manifolds and turbo looked different to my mates 1.8T 20v 150bhp seat? maybe joe richarson can help as he works for audi.

Alot of people throw any old dump valve on them too, cos the it sounds mint cos it's a turbo init!
They need a recirculating bov, others are harmful to the engine. My mates goes well, 116k on the clock, still going strong. Farking expensive to repair/service though.
