road tax/engine swaps?

So you have a car/chassis from the old 2 band system and an engine in the new many band system.

The engine (when in a much ehavier car) is in a lower cost tax bracket than the car/chassis is/was.... Would it be possible to pay the lower VED, or is it fixed at the two band system regardelss of putting in a cheaper to run engine?

I think its fixed Stu, as if its from the earlier band then its pre 2001 so in which case it stays in its normal tax bracket as its only engines/vehicles post 2001 where they work it out on emissions and such.
