What's the main difference between early and late 20XE/C20XE oil pumps?

Replacing my early one with a better condition late one, I see the front backing plate mount will need spacing out slightly, but is everything else okay? That big lump on top not get in the way of anything?

This thread implies there is modifications to do: http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=134544&highlight=early+late+pump

Cheers!

On the late typpe pump it just has a bracket that holds an extra pulley tentioner for the timing belt.

This needs removing to run an early type backplate/belt cover?

I wouldnt imagine it gets in the way of anything? its only for an extra pulley to bolt onto.. heres apic of mine, it mite help in someway.

I don't think the early backplate has a hole for it though?!

iain, are you fitting a replacement gear kit or just putting a later pump on cos the gear is better in it???

Fitting a second hand late-type pump as the housing and gears are in better condition.

I guess if it fouls it's perfectly ok to just grind off the additional lug?!
