what can i do to make the trip as painless as possible ?

Buy a new water pump.

what does dodgey mean? If you mean you'r loosing water through the mounting point in the block, or through the pressure seal in the pump itself then you're going nowhere. You could try topping up the water as you go but it's a big risk.
