i think the piston rings have gone on my 1.6 16v ecotec how big of a job is it to replace the rings?

its a full stripdown job
crank and pistons out etc

i think it all depends on what u find in there
if they're worn or scored etc then prolly
it might even be advisable to do it

if the rings have busted big style mate then they will have been drawn up and down the block, causing scored bores like aragron said
the only way to cure that is to have a rebore or a "hone"
hone i think they can use standard items to replace, rebore you need to use oversized pistons etc and that.

if the bores havent been scoured badly, or developed a lip then you can simply put the car on ramps, take the head off, drop the sump of and push the pistons through the top of the block, would save having to take the hole engine out.
i think the piston rings have gone
but before you go changing them get the problem confirmed at a garage by a compression test etc
what makes you think they have gone? how many miles has the engine done?
