ford zetec help

my stepbrother has a focus cmax 05 reg 2.0 zetec..

when it is cold, it can crank over for ages until it starts, and then there is a horrendous smell of petrol... then it clears.. if it is warm, it starts ok..


what should i be looking for???

i'm guessing its something on the spark ignition side of things...
but i have no experience of these ford things

lol apparently its a common thing, A friends got it on the fiesta RS, i questioned it when it happened at the petrol station, and he said its quite common but there hasn't been an ECU update brought out for it!

my stepbro nows nowt about engines, but someone told him its the egr valve, but i just am not sure how that could cause it..

maybe start with cheap things like correctly gapped spark plugs?

has anything been done to it? it sounds like flooding, maybe check out the tps to see if its set correctly/failing, as when the one on my xe died it had the same symptons, until it died altogether and i'd get the occasional pop lol
