View Full Version : c20 xe lifters changed and now wont time up ??
Ive just bought a brand new set of lifters from autovaux today and fitted them now my engine wont time up
All the marks are where they should be but it wont turn a rotation only about half by hand, you can feel it nip up and stop so what could be wrong???

are you turnong it over buy hand ??? you shouldnt be able to unless the plugs are out ???
im using a rachet on the bottom pulley mate and it should spin straight over that way but it stops dead with a knock so i know somethings wrong??

have you filled the new lifters with oil when fitting
i was told you put them in oil then pump till they charge up and go hard, the set ive bought came in a plastic package with oil on them and they were hard to start with so i presume they are already done??
should i be able to pump them before fitting them?

you sure your not turning it and smacking the valves on the pistons? make sure that the engine is either close to its timing mark or a bit before it so there all the pistons sit level and then turn the valves to the right place and then time the bottom end in

Are you relying on the timing mark on the auxillary belt bottom pully if you know what i mean? I say this because on my xe that mark was 2-3 teeth out compared to the actual mark on the crank pulley itself due to the rubber being worn.
Yes ive done that, both cams and bottom end rotate fine on there own also but soon as they are timed together with the belt and rotated they are touching each other?
If i have the engine pully mark spot on the cams will turn all the way round no probs, so once timed up it should be fine but im running out of ideas now.
Yes compton ive been using the mark on the single v pully that it was originally timed up with.
Ive just had this engine built and spent a fortune on doing so but when started it tapped so ive decided to put new genuine lifters in and its giving me a headache lol

What I would do is take the lifters out again and pump them out then re-fit them making sure they have a bit of spongeyness to them. Thats how i have always been told how to do them.

hmm this may sound like a long shot but by any chance did your engine used to be a ribbon belt type and swapped it for a v-belt type?

^ agreed, Because the timing mark is in a different place on the v belt type and the ribbon belt type. obviously its the same place its timed just its bolted on differently as the holes only fit in one position.

yes ment to be timed at just after TDC. but if you take off the alternator crank pulley on the bottom crankshaft / camshaft pulley it actually has a TDC mark on it lining it up with the oil pump
Yes compton ive been using the mark on the single v pully that it was originally timed up with.
Never time it up with this pulley, they slip on the rubber damper so the mark doesn't line up with the pointer. I have had one six teeth out before.
Take the aux pulley off and time it up with the crank pulley mark lined up with the oil pump mark.
It is running a single v pulley, so when i take the pulley off lee im looking for a mark that should line up with the oil pump, i will get the haynes out tommorow and hopefully this will save me taking all the f in lifters out again lol cheers guys will let you know how i get on tomorrow.
There is a mark on the crank pulley (behind the v pulley) and a notch out of the oil pump casing (and the black cambelt backing plate) right at the bottom where it meets the sump. Line these up when timing it up.
thanks mate :thumb: 10 times at least i had that belt on and off today !

yup take the pulley off and all will be fine
I hope I haven't done any damage by turning it back and forth with the rachet doh

Nah - unless your ratchet was a 1/2" 3 foot long bar and you were hanging off it! lol
The mark is at TDC at 6 oclock - you will see it as soon as you take off the pulley....
time it up the old fasion way, screwdriver down the spark plug holewow you actually listened and learnt something from me
