Ok I have once again decided i want to go down the turbo route, said i wasn't bothered and its only taken me about 5 month to change my mind so I bought our youngen nova shell off him which was running a xe on bike carbs.

This one isnt going to be done a quick as the 3.2 turbo was as i have other things to be doing to like changing some parts on the 3.2 and getting the astra GTE ready for test etc.

But here's a couple of pics of it, I have bought some parts already which i'll sort pics out for!

The shell is going to be repainted in bright red with a new bonnet and some fabricated front arches (1" wider) the engine has already been removed and we sorted the bay out ready for a new engine.

I'm just going to slowly build up the power bit by bit, ths is a test to see how much power and 1/4 mile time i can get from a standard turbo, i'll run 10psi to start then keep changing bits on the engine and modify the standard turbo then when i think i can't go no more i'll start turning up the boost.....nitrous will be added but after i'm running higher boost :thumb:
The gearbox is getting a queer plated diff in that should see plenty of traction ;) paddle clutch and equal length shafts

The gearbox was stripped, standard diff removed, clean (cheers to gareth c for the unreal cleaning fluid) so its ready for the bell housing to be sent off to be modified to seat the new special diff thats on order.

The tyre well has also been cut out to fit a flat plate and probably centre exit 3" exhaust system but i didn't get a pic of that, should be more pics tomorrow night.

david dixon
25-06-10, 12:04 AM
Well i have got a little further with my turbo project in between working on the v6 nova.

The tyre well cut out has been welded up and seam sealed then tetrosealed along with 90% of the rear half of the floor, i have left the chassis to do last of all, i can at least get the gsi tank back on now.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/novarearfloor.jpg

The tank has been cleaned and sprayed in white stone guard ready to paint but i'm not sure what colour yet but i'll have to be quick as i want it on.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/gsitank.jpg

The f28 box is complete and ready to fit the new diff in soon as the bearing turn up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/f28mod1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/f28mod.jpg

i have a feeling this diff is going to destroy some cv's sooner or later but i'm not bothered as long as it does its job on the strip
90% locking plated diff.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/90plateddiff.jpg

next job was to clean up my home made tie rod lower kit to lower down from the f28 box, this was fitted to my old nova turbo so i thought i would clean them up and use them again, they were also coated in stone guard ready to paint

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/6speedtiebars.jpg

just had the pump delivered and ready to fit soon as i get some braided 12mm fuel lines to match the pump connections (305ltr/hr pump).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/305ltrpump.jpg

I'll update more soon as i can.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/novaredarms.jpg

I am waiting on some diff bearing and need to find a new crown wheel for the f28 diff then i can get that back together, alos need some 12mm fuel hose then i can get the tank on and the lines all made up

Well i had time to do a little on the nova today in between working on my astra gte v6.
I refitted the fuel tank after it had dried from a lick of paint (thanks to adam for the fuel pipe) i just need some more 12mm hose for the new fuel pump then i can get that fitted too, I also got the new copper 12mm under body fuel pipe fitted so also need a bit 12mm hight pressure hose to connect to the fuel rail from the copper pipe.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/novaturbotank.jpg

After doing that i painted the servo and refitted when it was dry.
Then i moved on to the interior, i fitted the white faced boost guage along with the white faced oil pressure and volt meter guages form a calibra then finished off with a set of white banded nova SRI clocks, the only 2 that need finishing off are the calibra guages but i'll wait until the engine is in.
I drill a hole on the pod so i can fit a fan switch so i can over ride the standard fan switch if i feel the need.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/novaturbodash.jpg

I still have a good few parts to buy yet, poly carb windows, 12mm fuel connection filter, fuel lab adjustable pressure regulator with 12mm connectors, 3" stainless steel bends, straights and silencers to make my system but still unsure what to do about a downpipe yet, maybe 3" too!
I need a set of front coilovers (probably avo with 400+lb springs) adjustable top mounts, electronic speedo system as my f28 can no longer run a driven speedo because the casing had to be altered to fit the plated diff inside.
There's probably loads more but can't remember yet.

David.

that red tank looks sweet with all the black around it. no problem about the hoses, sure you will find a use for them.

Ok i have a small update,

The underside car of the car is complete apart from fitting the pump and a meter of braided line. its all been tetrosealed after it was all cleaned off.

Here are some parts i have been buying.
Fuel regulator and oil filled guage.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/fuelreg.jpg

Then some silly priced AN fittings and braided line to match (still more fitting to turn up yet.)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/anfittingsandpipe.jpg

Then 14 mikalor boost hoses to fit over the 2.5" silicone connectors

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/mikalor.jpg

A 3" stainless steel kkk downpipe with 2 lambda bosses, 1 for lambda and 1 for a wideband kit

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/3inchdownpipe.jpg

Then a 3" tial pipe to weld on to the stainless system when the parts turn up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/3inchtailpipe.jpg

The car is going for painting in a couple of weeks with a few new panels so i will take pics as thats coming along too.
There is also progress on the engine but i'll update that later on.

David.

David.

david dixon
03-10-10, 07:34 PM
ok i have found a little time to get my engine together between working on other things.

Firstly i fitted the oil spray jets into the modified bearing seats

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/oiljets2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/oiljets.jpg

Then i prepped the block ready to fit the new main bearings (original copper lined mahle's) so fitted those in then before refitting the crank i used a little lube on the bearing faces.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/c20letbottomend2.jpg

Then i refitted the crankshaft, fitted and top half of the bearings, lubed the faces and refitted the main end caps,
next was the fitting of the steel con-rods with mahle copper lined bearings along with the standard forged mahle pistons with a new set of mahle piston rings (the crank and bores were bang on with the engine only having done 76k),
then i fitted a Z20LET oil pump for higher oil pressures along with a modified oil pickup pipe, i used a sealed baffle oil pan instead of the usual 2 gaskets.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/c20letbottomend1.jpg

Once the main parts were done i moved on to fit a ARP head stud kit and a cometic 2mm steel head gasket and a new water pump.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/c20letbottomend.jpg

with the bottom end about done it was time to move on to the head which has been pressure tested, cleaned and skimmed and new stem seals, i had the gas flowed job checked and the valve seats moddified then the valves lapped in. i have have a pair of xe cams to fit, a vernier inlet pulley and the thermostat housings along with a cool running thermostat.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/gasflowedheadinlet.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/gasflowedheadexhaust.jpg

after the head is complete there will only be the sump, crank case breather pipe, cam cover to modify, timing back plate, pulley and belt to fit ( apart from manifolds etc)

well here's a little update, the car is now down to a shell as we start to prep it for some paint, doors, wings, tail gate and windows are out, i have a fibreglass gate to go back on it which needs some prep to be flat, we are also going to modify the front wings so they are flared out a bit.
the paint has been rubbed down dints filled and flattened back plus the rear wheel arch repairs are about complete so it wont be long beofre the primer is on!
Not bad for 3 night work.

well there's a little bit more of a update here, the body work is about there, the main bit is to finish off the rear arches then its about ready for primer which i'm hoping will be complete by tomorrow tea time then it can be flattend and painted sunday....

We are going to cut and pull out the wings then weld a section in to make them wide enough for the tyres i'm wanting, i'll post a pic once we get them sorted.

also needed a bonnet due to the amount of dents in mine so got one for £25 off a mate (Cheers Danny)....

david dixon
09-10-10, 01:32 AM
no bother mate, still work to do tomorrow!

david dixon
09-10-10, 11:06 PM
Well there's been a big step today, we got all the bodging done, flattening it back and rubbing down, drilled the new bonnet for the pins etc...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/newnovapaint4.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/newnovapaint5.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/newnovapaint6.jpg

once that was all finished it was time to get a few good layers of primer on it so we had plenty to rub back to make it as flat as we can tomorrow before the paint goes on, we mixed some of the gloss coat with the primer to give a base colour for the red as its thin and very bright red (but doing so it came out pink ha ha)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/newnovapaint.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/newnovapaint3.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/newnovapaint2.jpg

so hopefully all being well the car will be rubbed flat and have a good coating of the top coat tomorrow then it'll be ready to mask the outside up to do the rear floor inside then we can flatten all the paint back and give it a polish later.

Cheers.

david dixon
10-10-10, 10:54 PM
well we got to work on it about dinner time today and started rubbing down that lovely pink primer, it took us a good while to rub it back making sure it was flat, we sprayed a bit black paint over so we could see any flat spots while we were rubbing it down, then we used to the air line to blow off all the dust, rubbed more off with a damp cloth the blow it off again then used a magic cloth (what we call them) they grab loose dust and collect it.
it got to about 8 then we decided it was time to get the paint on....

Here's while we were rubbing down

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/novaredpaint3.jpg

and in the boot, seam sealed the platted in tyre-well

I did say it was the brightest red i could find but i think i'm going to need shades in the sunlight, my phone's camera isn't showing it very well.
only the doors to fit and sort out the fibreglass tailgate to be fitted and painted then leave it to go hard and flatten back and polish, shoudl be well shiney after its all done!

Well things have changed in the last couple of weeks, from what was going to be a standard~ish engine is now going to be looking around 400bhp+ on a DD r/r i would have thought.
I have bought chris suttons nortech manifold, Precision 6262 turbo, 44mm tial wastgate, screamer pipe, v-band clamps, boost pipes, top hat, intercooler etc so the standard turbo is being binned... its looking like the head is coming back off as i want to do a couple of changes.
anyway her's the pics of the bits even though i'm sure you've all seen them before.

06-11-10, 10:55 PM
Well i had a little time spare today so i cracked on for a couple of hours.
it was time for the 6 speed box to go back together with the new plated diff.
I also chucked a bare head on to a bare block to lift in to the bay ready to make some new mounts for the engine and box.
I have started on the gearbox side of the chassis today too, it will be finished tomorrow.

here is the new plated diff fitted to the box along with its new bearings
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/f28mods7.jpg

Then it was time to fit the other half of the box on, you will notice the 2 red arrows i have added to the pic...i have done this to help people out when building up a 6 speed box, the arrow pointing at the threads is where i removed a bold that holds a spring against the selector rod in the box (second arrow) this stops you fitting the other half on easily, this is why you hear most people saying they a pain in the **** to get back together!! they not if you remove this bolt and spring then refit after its together!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/f28mods8.jpg

i then put a little sealer around the edge of 1 side of the box to make sure there is no leaks once running, great sealer it is too, nice and thick stuff that vauxhall use themselfs (i got it from gareth c after we have put his box together using it)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/f28sealer.jpg

sorry about this bad pic, it shows the 2 parts inside the box where your linkage fits too on the outside (if you know what i mean) make sure they are in line otherwise the 2 parts of the box will never drop in place.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/f28mods6.jpg

so all done, with the 2nd half of the box dropped in place i refitted the spring and bolt so then i fitted it to the "mocked up" engine.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/mockupengine.jpg

Then i got on to drilling and tapping the rear of the box to accept the nova rear bracket. (M12 x 1.75 tap is needed)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/f28mods3.jpg

all drilled and tapped, bolts fit without a bother.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/f28mods2.jpg

so i got on to fitting the rear nova bracket
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/f28mods.jpg

with that all done i moved on to the nova engine bay......its going to need repainting anyway as the bay has been done over a year ago.
anyway i decided i wanted to go down the same route as i did the green nova turbo, i am making a box section so i can use the standard calibra 6 speed mount and rubber....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/novaf28mod.jpg

all will be clear tomorrow!!

david dixon
07-11-10, 06:57 PM
well not much to update today, i didn't get as much time on it as i thought i would.
anyway last night i met up with chris on got his front mount intercooler off him.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/intercooler.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/intercooler2.jpg

so today i cut the lugs off the front panel that holds the bottom of the nova grill in place, i had to do this to fit the intercooler pipes past the alloy radiator.

i also got the car in the air, stripped off the tie bars, wheels etc then fitted a inlet manifold and cam cover to the engine before pushing it under the front end of the car ready to be lifted up into the bay so we can make the 6 speed mount but i want to slightly reposition the engine's sitting angle but i'll photo that once its done!
we managed to make some of the plates which will make up the box section for the calibra rubber to bolt into.

That was about it today, more later.

david dixon
13-11-10, 04:40 PM
ok me and one of my mates got cracking with the nova today.

first thing to do was to get a start on the gearbox mount, so we liftted up the test engine and aligned the 6 speed mount to the chassis so we could drill the base plate then tack it on to the chassis
Here is the base plate with the calibra bracket and rubber tacked in.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/newmount.jpg

Here is a pic from the arch side, all this will be boxed in with 3mm steel sheet at the front and a new double skin on the rear.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/newmountarch.jpg

With that held in enough until we box it all off we decided we would cut the cross member off as it restricted manifold fitment.
we then test fitted the manifold to see what had to be done.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/manifoldtest.jpg

we could see there was going to be some work to fit the turbo so we marked it out and also trail fitted the screamer pipe (this was the first place we thought)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/screamertest.jpg

At that time we were happy that it was going to go there and extend it under the offside arch so we moved on to the nearside inner wing....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/cutinnerwing.jpg

That had to go to fit in the turbo but we are making a new arch to replace it.
with that cut we test fitted the turbo.
At first we thought of pushing the compressor exit to cooler down through the cut out and route the pipes under the front panel....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/turbofitted2.jpg

but i wasn't happy with the amount of clearence the wheel would have on full lock so we had to alter the position of the screamer pipe and compressor exit.
so this is now how its going to sit so the cooler pipes will have to be shortened and the screamer pipe is going down where the cooler pipes were going to run just closer to the front and out near the front wheel.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/turbofitted4.jpg

so next is to drop the engine and box back out and start plating everything up and make a new screamer pipe, once the nearside is finished the offside nova mount is going and being replaced with a simular mount as the gearbox has.
Both headlight holders are probably going in the bin and being replaced with some tubing, this is needed on the nearside to fit in a filter and connector once the headlight has been removed!

More updates later.

good work dave, one very very fast nova being built :)

should be a good tussle with this next year :) what power are you aiming for??? i should be seeing 450-460 in the next week or so :)

david dixon
13-11-10, 05:21 PM
Thanks mate,

I think you'll take it next year, i am only aiming around 400-450 next year.
its 2012 that it will be more power, i am thinking of changing the pistons, cams, solids next winter so i can take it somewhere around 550bhp for 2012.

will be good to have some fast nova's next year as it few and far between!

David.

13-11-10, 05:27 PM
sounds good, i wont be going any more than what this new turbo can do so if it makes 440 for theor 450 or 460 etc that is where it'll stay. i am not spending any more on a new manifolds or rads etc i have to draw a line some where, as it does alotof road miles i need tokeep its road manners as suprisingly it is very easy to drive in its current state

david dixon
13-11-10, 05:35 PM
Yeah that sounds fair enough and i can see your point there!
there sure does have to be a line drawn some where, i'm fairly sure you will see some good times with that much power too.
I do like the look of yours and to be fair yours is the reason i dont mind hanging the big cooler out the front, yours suits its look!

David.

discoinferno
13-11-10, 05:53 PM
its there because i had no where else for it to go , the way the manifold angled the turbo prevented me putting the rads behind the bumper..... but it works ,and works well

david dixon
13-11-10, 05:57 PM
thats all that matters tbh, i wont be able to get mine too close because of the manifold pipes, the alloy rad will go in (just forward of its standard place) but the cooler has a fairly thick core so its going to sit out the front a bit.

i'm sure we'll see when i get to it.

Well there are no work updates but there are some new parts, full set of gaz coilovers, alloy strut tops, equal length shafts, new cv's, RC 1000cc injectors etc

i'll post some pics in a bit but you get the idea :thumb:

Ok, Not much of a update so far but a couple of pictures of some more of my parts that i haven't uploaded yet.

First is a set of Gaz coilovers which has had a anti corosion coating, the bolts have been coated (to look factory new) and the top mounts have been powder coated.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/Gazcoilovers.jpg

I also have the rear which have been done the same and have also had uprated bushes fitted.

Then there is a some of the cv's i have so far, 2 outer big block cv's and 1 centre cv to fit our nova equal length conversion shafts together.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/novaturbocvs.jpg
Bought from Browney.

I will get a pic of the equal length shafts we supply up and pics of the rear shocks later, also i should have some more update pics of the car!

Cheers.

There's a bit of an update between working on the blue nova.

The gearbox mount is finished apart from needing a skim of bodge before the bay is repainted.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/Nova%20C20LET%20Project/rednovaboxmountmod4.jpg

Once it got to that stage a chucked a bit primer on it until its ready for the bodge and paint.

Bit of an update;

Things have changed a bit from my first idea, the engine i built was a bit of a half way house which was only to run for a year until i had a second engine with more power built.
I have since sold the long engine after building it all up as 400-450bhp was never going to be enough for me...so now i am collecting parts to start the new engine which i want built and in for the new year! if you have a bare c20let block in very good condition let me know.

Cheers.
