Did you install all the driver and software bollocks that came with it? That should give you printer diagnostics stuff and tell you which cart is empty.
we have a printer ink shop in our town, and they do really cheap refills

Open the lid. Press the ink button and the carriage will move across. It'll stop next to a little bit that sticks out and points to the empty cartridge. Press the ink button again. If it stops on more than one cartridge, they're also empty. Once its pointed to the empty ones it'll move to the position where you can change them.
£12 each is a lot for an epson cartridge, which model is it?

I can't get it on the cheap, but we sell ours fairly cheaply. I'll see how much they are for that model at work tomorrow.
