When I went up the strip on my first run I had the car at just over 1000rpm and I was slow getting off the line. This was also my first ever run, so I didn't realise how quickly the lights changed from Amber to green. On my second run I held it at 2500rpm and I managed to get a much better start and it felt like the car was catapulted off the line.
When changing gears, it might be best to get to a rolling road before hand to see where your peak power is. Theres not much to be gained from bouncing off the rev limitier before changing gears. Because of the engine mods that I have I'm able to take the car to well over 7000rpm. I found myself changing gear at around 6500-7000rpm whilst going up the strip.
I might have been able to push the car more, but I'm not sure what I would gain from doing this, if anything.
Get to the strip nice and early and see how it goes, try differnt things throughout the day, you'll soon find a technique that you'll be happy with. Don't feel like you have to get the most out of your car on your first day at the strip. The last thing you want to do is blow your engine up on your first run :|

Best place to change gear isn't at the redline. Try to find where maximum powere and torque is. You want to change when you hit max power and then you should find you will drop to where max torque is? Just thought of that from looking in the haynes and max power is 6000 something where torque is 5000 something. If you rev the nutts off it you will notice that the engines starts to loos power.
When i set off on the race bike i hold it at 6000rpm! And change at 12000ish!!
