Another quick question.

AFAIK there are 3 types of F20. Which model/s did the longer 5th gear ratio F20's come from?

1, f20's what? No need for the '.
2, never heard there are 3, i've had cav and Astra ones and they've all been the same.

Thought there were 3 types all with the same 1-4 ratios but different 5th speed (so I've been reading over the years).

Was just wondering as the slightly longer 5th gear would be good for motorway driving, less noise, increased mpg and all that.

What sort of revs does the common F20 do at say 70mph?

Stuart

F18 WR for the high end 5th

I've never heard that and looking at what Stu's said there is but isn't as they have the same gears,

And about 3.5-4ish k.

So I'm looking for a 3.55 FD to get the slightly longer 5th.

I don't get how you get 3 final drives...

before the 0 is 1-5 the 0 is 6th (ie non existent) and the numbers to the right of the 0 are the FD's

As said there are 3 different F20's, the FD's are as Stuart said :

3.72 / 3.55 / 3.42

3.55 is the most common one, i've got one of the other's in the garage, but can't remember which one it is tbh, iirc you can tell by the rings on the gears..anyone know?

Mazz, I'm after the 3.55 you willing to sell it?

I still do get it.

The first two you list are the same number wise tho, so there's no difference in them.

I've got either a 3.42 or 3.72 from my old box, the 3.55 is in the car now! They are the most common ones, PM Iainel - iirc he had a few damaged F20's

Benn

Tek, how do you know the box you have hasn't got that all ready?

Nova_Tek

I haven't got a box. Looking for one and I'd preferably go for the slightly longer 5th. If the 3.55 final drive are the slightly longer ones then that's what I'll go for.

Benn

Ah ok, wont 3.72 be longer?

Nova_Tek
13-04-10, 10:45 PM
It will be but I don't want it to be super long, but again not too close as I've suffered with high revs on the motorway in the NOva with it's F10 lol Just want it in the middle.

5th is different in all 3 F20's

iirc someone on mig fitted the f18wr 5th into an f20. just do that.

Benn

Then i really don't get what you've put up there at all.

its a sample from a facking massive spreadsheet. this wont translate properly into text.

but the left most number after the gearbox name is 1st, then 2nd then 3rd then 4th then 5th then there is a column for 6th which is 0 in this case and then its the Final drives.

easy

Benn

But why is 5th and the final different? Surely they are the same gear?

I'm on my second F20 and this one is out of an SR 130, can't tell the difference

No.

if you took the FD out you would still be able to select 5th gear, but you wont go anywhere.

Perhaps a look at howstuffworks or wikipedia will help.
(think of it like a RWD car that has its gearbox upfront so 5th is in there it spins the prop shaft and turns the diff. the FD is in the diff)

Ah ok i get it a lil more.. Cheers.
