i bought the nova like this today, its the standard xe clutch and a beetle clutch plate i think, the front is space framed and it has ford cortina front hubs

well i scraped the idea of the beetle gearbox and i am now going to use a vectra subframe, so out came the grinder and out came the beetle axel  here is the vectra subframe just sitting in place, does anyone know if a redtop engine will bolt on to the vectra engine mount?

Urghhh …I'm at a loss ~ why go over to this less desirable setup?

Is it purely because the beetle gearbox isn't up to the job? If so I've seen single seaters running that configuration so there MUST be a box strong enough.

Look at all that extra weight before you weld it all on :(

jonn
10-05-10, 09:52 PM
i know its more weight and it will take alot of work to set it up but once its finished its finished the opel gearbox should last a long time and if it breaks i have 2 more of them. i had problems aswell with the beetle back brakes, their wasnt enough room to fit the brakes inside the drums because the suspension mounts were in the way. now i will have rear discs

jonn
11-05-10, 10:12 PM
i fitted the suspension and wheels to get everything in place to start making the frame for the subframe to mount to. i need to move the subframe back about 2" so the wheel is not as close to the bottom of the arches

i have to say that i agree, the set up you are going for will make the car a rear engined car rather than mid engined. you may want to do a little more research before you go too far with the mods.

The Simps
24-05-10, 10:13 PM
As with above comments I'd go with the beetle or audi box.

jonn
24-05-10, 10:55 PM
i know the beelte gearbox and engine would be the easyist way to do it, but as i said before i had problems with rear brakes and beetle gearboxes are going to be harder to find, the other reason i am to use the subframe is that i have 2 vectras for parts, i liked the idea of the beetle gearbox but i have my mind made up and i am going to use the subframe

Might be worth dropping Chip a PM on migweb. He's got a mid engined nova using mk4 astra struts. He's had lots of problems running the macpherson strut so maybe a few PMs etc might stop you making the same mistakes.

All brave what you're doing tho. Good to see something different.

i would be tempted to weld verticle pieces to the subframe mounts to make them alot stronger, it seems they could bend up as they are at the mo

i am using them mounts for the subframe just to get car rolling. then i can move it into the other shead and get welding and strengthening with the big c02 welder and start making the inner arches to hold the strut

Im sure the beetle gearbox can take loads of power.
I read in a mini magazine a few years back, about a guy who had a beetle with a v8 with over 500 bhp im sure the gearbox was standard it was used for hillclimb.

Depending on what beetle box it is, Most of them would self distruct with an xe. My mate has a tuned 1303s and it has a GT box due to everything else from the 1300cc box to the 1303s box not being strong enough! As long as this subframe set up is done well it will be better than the bettle box. Plus the Gearing on the beetle box's are w**k. Looks good work mate! keep the updates!

i am already racing a 1.6 16v nova, this my second car to build and i am only turning 17 next month!

is this going to be autograss mate or road legal . ps dont mean to cause any chew mate but wont that plate on the wishbone set up foul on the drive shaft ? maby not as close in real as in pic but looks very close

jonn
11-09-10, 08:48 AM
it will be used for autograss and mabey track days in the future if the suspension works ok, the plate looks very close to the drive shaft in the picture but it is about 30-40mm away from it

ste porter
12-09-10, 01:52 AM
that rear wish bone setup is actualy alot clever than what people realise infact you have just solved a massive engineering problem that alot of people have suffered in the past with these types of build and you havent even realised it!

chip spent a fortune trying to get his head round the problem of mid mounted engfines using front wheel drive subframes.

problem is most people run track rods and mount them to the chassis to set the track of the rear wheels when they do it as a result as the suspension travels up and down it causes the wheel to toe in or out and causes whats known as bump steer. This can be very nasty in the wrong situations when you least exspect it

that setup you have there completly eliminates it the only adverse efect though from that is the camber situation its non adjustable and as a result lower it goes the more camber you will get

thats said though it could be made adjustable via slotting the holes.

well done

jonn
12-09-10, 08:27 AM
thanks mate :thumb: as you said the only disadvange is the camber will change a bit when its lowered but i can put in the slots if i need to change it,

looks well so whats the info on fitting the isuzu td flywheel to the xe what clutch etc etc surely the info will help a lot of conversions

jonn
27-10-10, 07:52 PM
their is a small bit of work involved in fitting the flywheel,
only 6 of the 8 holes lined up so i had to do a small bit of filing to get the other 2 holes to line up.

the ring gear on the isuzu flywheel would not match the xe starter so i took off the ring gear and had to take a small bit off of the flywheel on the lathe then i fitted the xe ring gear

i used a x16xe clutch and flywheel

just a pointer...if i were you, i'd seriously look at mounting the rad in further, if you are planning autograss with it, then there will be impact, and that rad will be knackered........

and if you don't run the alternator, but just keep a good charge on the battery, it is worth 5hp.

jonn
03-11-10, 08:09 PM
i have to make up guards to put around the radiator to protect it. it would of been handy to keep the rad in the back but i think the temperature would be to high and not much air can get in and keep the rad cool

i got the rear of the cage finished today and i have the door bars and harness bar ready to fit

Yeah & that'll be the last thing you want 10 years down the line when it's twice the horse power ~ BODY STRENGTH, BALANCE & SAFTEY.

Cut that tubing out now & get the hole drill on every internal panel because everyone knows it's all about 400 HP drag slag turbos & fcuk all useability.

Jonn, the following of the thread seems to have lost momentum, but thankfully the build hasn't. Looking fantastic. One thing though, has the Galvanising left the inside of the inlet rough? Might be worth polishing it and giving it an even coat of paint instead, to aid air flow.

/\ Elaborate please Mr Stuart.

Stuart
18-05-11, 09:21 PM
if the air flow is too laminar (smooth walls) then it wont mix properly in the combustion chamber, so a bit of a rough surface will breakup the boundary layer causing the air to be a bit turbulent and mix properly :)

Dod
18-05-11, 09:28 PM
Ah, so the particals bounce about and head off indiffferent directions and so mix whereas if it was smooth they'd just drop straight in.

Today I am more smarterier than yesterday.

Awesome, nice work so far. Are you finishing the exterior off with a nice respray or anything like that once it's up and running?

jonn
10-06-11, 10:09 PM
thanks, i am thinking of respraying it white when its ready.

right i got a fuel pump tonight piped it all up and i got the engine fired up after a few seconds the engine was not started in about two and a half years and their was no smoke from it.

their is a slight miss fire so i am going to get new plugs for it tomorrow and pipe up a radiator for the time being so i can let the engine heat up to running temperature and see if it is runnung lean or rich.

i have to order another cable to connect the laptop to the ecu so i can download the c20xe map on to it. this should cure the miss fire,

i will get a few pictures tomorrow and try and get a video up

jonn
11-06-11, 08:43 PM
i spent most of the day fitting the pipes for the radiator. i started it a few times to see if i could find out why it was miss firing. i found out that two of the plug leads were mixed up so when i started it again it was like a new engine, the engine revved twice as good and the noise of it! a good few flames came out of the exhaust! i will definitely get a video up of it tomorrow, i dont want to upset the neighbours to much.

have some bad news with the engine... last sunday i started the nova and it was running fine, then on monday i went to start it and it did not go to well. the engine was turning over for a second then it locked up and the engine did not start. i had to use a socket and rachet to turn the engine back and when i turned the engine by hand it stopped a certain point.

so today i took the head off and there is very small damage to no.1 piston and the valve guide is broken, but more bad news..... the engine is still locking up. when i compare piston no.1 with no.4 piston no.1 is about 3mm lower so it must be a bent con rod or something nasty.

its going to cost a good few euro to fix it and put it back together so i am going to have to leave it for a month or two and try and work away with the rest of the car. the engine was the only thing that was fully complete and cost me a good bit

I never seen that one before!

I know the brake under high revs etc, but not bend on them selves etc, must of already been slightly bent/stressed before you had it to do it on start up then.

I personally would replace the lot to be on the extra safe side, no point in keeping something that been under strain/stress already, as you might have to replace it in the end if it's weakened etc, could just replace with second hand goos items some how?

Scott

Bit of a weird one that, like Scotty says, it must already been weakened because (afaik) you've not really had it under any load before...

How did the piston get damaged there?

jonn

i am not sure what happened i just went to start it then bang. i think the piston got damaed when it went to come back down and it hit off the crank

it hydraulic-ed. either loads of fuel in the chamber or water. the piston had nowhere to go & the weakest thing bent.. the rod.

jonn
02-08-11, 06:58 PM
it must of been the fuel that caused it then because the head gasket looked to good. i had the fuel pump switch off so the switch itself must be faulty or got stuck. at least now i can give it a good rebuild and fit the apr rpd bolts.

Im impressed its a big job for your age hope it all works out for you. Its a nice bit of fabricating those rear arms how do you get them square and at the right dimensions?? A friend built a jig for his wesfield lower arms.
Also remember clenliness is the key on the engine build a slight bit of debris from the fabricating getting in the engine will waste all you hard earned money. build it in the kitchen when the olds are out ;)

Hi Jonn I'm no expert at setting up carb's but from my understanding you will get a better performance from them with some carb trumpets fitted as they will effect the engine torque.

right i have now decided to take the coilovers out of the front of my other nova and use them in the back of this, i just need to order some longer gravel inserts

jonn
04-12-11, 06:43 PM
i think i am now going to use these coilovers instead, the only problem is it needs 2 bolt holes on the bottom like a nova strut.

the plan is to get some 50mm pipe and bore it out and thread the inside of it then weld on the 2 bits of flat with the 2 bolt holes each side and screw in up on to the coilover and put a bolt through the rose joint at the bottom to keep it in place.

autoworksnovasport
16-12-11, 12:13 PM
sorry if im being stupid i dont understand what you doing with the tube?

so your coilover is threaded right to the bottom?? are you using an extra ring to lock it to the tube??

and are the shocks going at the 45degree angle or on the flat back of that metal triangle???

jonn
16-12-11, 12:48 PM
the shocks will be bolted to the flat part not the 45°
i will use lock tight and i have to drill and put a bolt across at the bottom to hold it in place.

the reason why i am using them is because it is the cheapest way, i am 18 so work off a very low budget!

this is what they really look like i still have to drill a hole for the damper adjuster aswell.

autoworksnovasport
16-12-11, 01:22 PM
so work off a very low budget!

dont we all :d

i see now you have explained how its goin together yes a bolt through the tube were the bottom of the shock eyelet will be is ok depending how far down the tube you want the coilover to sit or are you drilling several holes??? personaly i would get another lock ring (so you would have 3 rings on the bottom of the shock 2 to lock the spring and one to lock the shock in place on the tube then this would also be adjustable! And the threaded part of the tube would act as your mounting point for the shock so in theory you could cut the eyelets off the bottom and wind the shock as far in as you wanted;) just an idea its up to you

May i ask, what you haven't remove the oil pressure light switch and screwed the oil pressure sender in, in its place? As the new one you have does pressure and light..

My aftermarket one hit the block too in the standard location on the pump also, should run fine from there in the block as mine does.

i started to get the geometry setup, my biggest problem is what height to mount the top of the coilover

Today's 9 hours work
i got the subframe out and the diff welded in the box, got the engine fully finished and gearbox back on.

done a bit of cutting waste material off the subframe. you would be surprised how light the subframe actually is.

plans for tomorrow are to plug engine in fit exhaust and hope it starts!

got everything fitted to the subframe and bolted into the car.

The thing I love about this thread is its momentum, it keeps going and the progress is consistent. Its not pretty but its not ment to be, its function over form and I love the fact the diff is welded. Gives it the reel thrash feel, like its built to be used and abused. Fantastic work and well done mate.

thanks Dod good to know that people are are still interested in it, it,s certainly going to be built for abuse! i would of liked to do things different with it but have a low budget and as you said its function over form, the difference between motorsport and road cars. i cant wait to get it finished and have some fun with it.

thanks mate, i got the engine started today, it took a while to get the oil pump primed, had to fill oil filter and oil cooler with oil then pump oil in the back of the oil pump where the 19mm bolt is. once i got oil pressure i started it. its reading about 75psi when cold.

have the fuel and water tank fitted properly now. have the front brakes and hyd clutch working as well. i will have to get some brake hoses made for the back because the standard ones are a bit short. anyone know where to get some made?

quick question about the timing belt, i had the auto tensioner set perfect when i timmed the engine up but when i turn the engine the arrow moves a small bit is this normal? also the belt overhangs the adjuster by about 1mm?

Hi-Two options for brake hoses.1) Bring your short hose into a motor factors and ask if there's another hose with similar fittings but longer 2)From what I can see of your rear suspension you need a flexi hose at the inner end,the rear hub will be going up and down but not steering so could you mount your steel brake pipe near your wishbone mount, connect the flexi to it,more steel pipe connects the flexi to the caliper??
