View Full Version : Engine temperature
The needle of the temperature gauge is always in the blue bit.
I first thought the gauge is not working but it is because it rises when stuck in traffic.
I'm guessing thermostat is stuck open.
What do you think?
dodgy sender, used to happen to my 1.2i, even after cleaning it up it never showed above half (had a broken stat at the time) with the 1.6 in/same clocks it worked perfectly

thermostat, wonky guage.
does it rise if you leave it ticking over for a while?
Are you running a "cool running" thermostat?

yes i would definatly say thermostat stuck open if theres even one fitted

Yeah.

No, its got the standard 92 deg one.
I'd say check the stat, as it should be getting warmer than that when driving.
Neither of mine have ive had a 1.2spi and now the XE and when im driving they never go past the top of the blue bar but when im sat idleing they creep up slowly.:wtf:
My XE with a cooler stat sits at 1/4 unless its sat idling

Those guages aren't brilliantly accurate or predictable. The best way of seeing if you have a 'lazy' or jammed stat. is to grab the hot hose (careful now ted) or alternatively you can tell from how quickly the heater gives you hot air inside the car.

I have a 1.2 1992 and mine does the same drove from Birmingham to Portsmouth this week and never went over the blue.
Took the thermostat housing off and look what I found...

No thermostat lol
when you fit the new stat, you will most like find that the head gasket is knackered too.........
I ran my 1.2 for about 3 years with a stuck stat... was always fine
if tis always cold, its stuck open. Therefore the HG should be fine.
Why is that?
you have to ask yourself, why did someone take the old one out & not replace it with a new one that would cost less than a fiver.............its always to mask a head gasket problem, the car doesn't get warm enough for the gasket to leak... its one of the oldest bodges in motoring
I know the car's history, I didn't just buy it of a randomer.
Plus there are no signs of headgasket issues.

stick a stat in it, and you'll soon find out, it was taken out for a reason
Mazz- Temps the same on my xe too. Ive got a 82deg cool stat fitted, fooking stupid things.
Why Ad? Mines seem to run fine with it in..
The engine runs fine, but its running too cold.....
It should be running warmer hence why it comes with a 92deg stat originally....
Might try the original stat then..
or an 88 degree diesel astra stat........
I got a new stat in, sits at 92 and doesn't overheat.
