My mate does the welding so I'll let him know as I tried and failed big time (although neither of us are welders by trade just do what we can with the kit he has). The inlet manifold I got off flame on corsa sport £138 delivered he has alot of good feedback on them too.

And before I forget thanks go to Gareth_C for his help and his girlfriend for her patience as I'm useless and need him to hold my hand while I do things :cry:lol

Good start, straight to work. Some nice additions to the engine there.

Not being harsh or owt but i would seriously consider grinding that welding off (it shouldnt take much lol) and starting again. You need more heat, and dont just run the weld straight pown the seam, move it side to side across the seam so the puddle gets into both panels. As that is now,it is providing no strength or benefit whatsoever.

wouldnt say i was perfect but i can weld canny. put it this was most of the arriva busses around are held together with my welding skills ha ha. dont mind coming over one weekend and doing it for you. but if your happy with the welding thats on fair play its your car.

Are you offering your services as such a connoisseur on welding lol I may not be the best welder but it has been holding my valver together for 4 yrs now and it was miles worse than that but I def agree about welding being practice makes perfect so if he wants to cut it out ill weld again pmsl

Pulled my finger out today and got a little bit done on her, pushed the wires back through-ish removed the soundproofing on the bulkhead, removed the steering rack, got more sanding/rust removing and welding done (also found more rust http://bttos.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_cry.gif), no pics yet will have some tomorrow. I'm glad to report Gareth's welding has improved though (and I didn't attempt any lol ) also received a parcel this morning which was a Nova GSi flywheel, I thought these things were supposed to be lighter than Corsa GSi ones, it nearly broke my wrist lol it will be taken to be made lighter and balanced though.

Will hopefully be going back over in the morning if my beatch (Gareth_C) isn't preoccupied, will come back with pics if I remember the camera :thumb:

Funny you say that Alex, I've had the engine for about a year maybe longer and had the pistons/rods/inlet for a while too. As you know playing with cars is not cheap and I don't earn a great deal to start with at the moment so its done bit by bit :(

May be for sale soon due to taking up too much space (so I'm told), if it goes up for sale it will include the GSi interior, twin reverse euro lights and what ever other spare bits I can find to throw in with it (bottom arms, some plastic bits other odds and sods).

Watch this space.

Its not thats its taking up too much space as such I could do with the space but as long as your actually doing something on the car its not an issue really there is plenty that can be done without spending money.
BTW how many people would help you as much as i have letting you use a garage for free for months help you as and when I can and try and spur you on to get the car done for your current MOT running out. Put a poll up asking people see if im fair or not with what i have said :thumb: :thumb:
Come over any night this week (or ill pick you up) and you can put the interior in and ill finish the welding and we will get it done, No complaints

Nice work, much left to stitch weld now? You not welding around the bottom of the rack mounting thinggy also?

Yeah that will be welded, didn't manage to get any work done on it today, a problem occurred else where leaving no time :(

As for the rest of the stitch welding, Gareth redone round one of the strut tops where I made a mistake (I did a bit around the steering rack mount, see if you can spot it lol ) but I think most of it is done, got to weld a panel in the battery tray and figure out the best way to sort the rear inner arch as I beleive there is no panels left and they're not cheap anyway.

Small update today, this took about two hours and Gareth whinged every minute of it lol we also picked up Danny SP (who managed to get dog turd EVERYWHERE after stepping in a tiny bit lol )

Gareth finished around the steering rack mount

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd220/lostboy_014/SDC10509.jpg

Then him and Danny made a plate up for the battery tray while I sanded down the hole where the loom comes through, which was then blanked off, plate

Update without pics though as I forgot the camera again. Me and Gareth picked Danny SP up at about midday and went to get some welding wire and proper welding gloves, sandpaper smooth and rough, body filler, and three tins of primer (2 hi build and 1 red oxide)

Gareth finished welding the plate in the battery tray which I then filed down with the power file top and bottom (on hi power it just put holes in the car and on low power looked like pigeon poo and left snots on the underside under the dash bit, but its done)

Then some body filler was applied around the pass side strut top to hide the welding and make things look a bit smoother, it needs more on it but I can see the big difference already, also going to apply it down the welds along the chassis legs.

And between that and Gareth and Danny putting Gareth's engine back together, taking a break and dropping Danny back home it took up most of the day, although getting around Middlesbrough was fun as there was some street parade going on.

Although I'm sure I've missed something.

AlexW

Putting filler on the bay seems will just crack? Hence why benns has plates iirc.

Good effort anyway bud.

Today was a semi productive day, after helping Danny SP with his car I got some work done on mine, all was going well til the sound proofing caught fire, thank **** its a slow burner eh

So there we were, Gareth welding away at the battery panel plate and I'm watching for fires couple of little ones and some sparks here and there quickly extinguished (or so I thought, hard to tell with brazing goggles on in low light) Gareth and Danny were hungry and it was my turn to pay so we got pizza and sat in the house and ate it, came back out and opened the garage to be met with alot of smoke, bad times, ripped most of the sound proofing out but it had spread quite far so had to use an extinguisher.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd220/lostboy_014/SDC10519.jpg

Cant see any damage and I doubt there is except maybe to the paint but the carpet will hide that, gonna have to sweep the dust up to find out more and thankfully it didn't catch the interior that is just plonked in as I had just bought some panel wipe and thinners and Gareth's Nova is in the garage next to mine, its fair to say I was quite annoyed/upset by this

You'd be impressed if I'd took pics of how well its come on so far shame I forgot the camera will take it in the morning though.

Gotta say a big thanks to Gareth and Danny again for all the help and forcing me into working instead of supervising lol who would have thought it could be so much fun, except all the cuts I acquired today :(

Danny, I got thinners and bodge on my phone lol it ****ing STINKS :(

Edit: Dave I see where you mean now, I had the power file with 60 grit paper all over there so it shouldn't be rust but I'll check that out in the morning.

Its is old boy but I was reading somewhere that you can get a lacquer or you can get the paint mixed different so that you could put a lacquer coat on it just so it didnt go sun faded. someone at the paint shop should clarify it. :thumb:

You can put 2k lacquer over direct gloss. Make the finish really deep and nice. (what Dave means is direct gloss and what would be base and clear)

I've got suspension sorted, nothing fancy just some TA-Technix coil over front shocks and springs rear I think just to get me going for now, getting them off a mate on friday, I also have an engine sorted I think, all depends if I can get down to it and bring it back up but its just a standard 1.6 16v (another XEL) not bad for £125 including all the running gear :d not that I need it lol

Small update time, me and Gareth made some plates up for the inner wings and Gareth welded them on then fitted the front panel for me :d he does a good job that lad considering the front panel was bent to hell in transit :( I didn't really get much time for pictures as Gareth needed a hand with his now and then and I was attempting some sanding again which I'll be honest, I didn't do a good job today.

Anyway I've got some suspension, unfortunately nothing spectacular just tome TA Technix, I've also been and bought new bottom ball joints, track rod ends and one wheel bearing as they only had one in, will get the other soon hopefully then get them pressed into the hubs. Couple of pictures for now of how its sitting and the suspension kit I got

I use a sundstrom mask with inter changable filters For painting it use 3 filters. There's a fabric filter first then a dust particle filter then the gas particle filter does the job like :thumb:

Bit of an update, no pictures as I keep forgetting my camera :mad:lol

Gave the brake servo, blanking plate for the opposite and wiper motor bracket a fresh coat of black paint the other day and left them to dry, fitted the servo and blanking plate today (not fitting wiper motor yet as need to repaint the scuttle tray) and I'm liking the look of the black on blue, also fitted the pedals and was going to fit the dash but I've managed to loose a few parts including the pin that goes on the back of the servo  hunted all over the garages but they've vanished :(

I ordered some top mounts and bearings off ebay so waiting for them to arrive so I can get the car rolling once I get the bearings pressed into the hubs, also sourced a bargain of an engine, going to pick that up on saturday hopefully :d.

Not alot has happened today, Gareth did the front brake lines for me, not something I've done before and expensive kit I couldn't afford to replace if I broke anything, but it looked easy enough to do.

I went to fit the clocks but noticed the steering column is pointing at the door lol will sort that out tomorrow and hopefully finish most/all of the interior, I also messed with a few other bits and bobs but nothing interesting, here's a picture anyway.

After getting the engine in I spent most of today adjusting the coil overs and tightening some nuts and bolts up on the tie bars/bottom arms as I had just put them on quickly before and had to swap some of the bolts and find bits I'd misplaced lol

It needs to be on the road by april. Arriva are taking buses off round my way (probably all over the country too) so monday to saturday buses will run til about 8pm and no buses at all on sunday, I work wednesday til 6pm and saturday and sunday til 11pm. So if my car isn't on the road by then I'm pretty ****ed.

And its looks like I'm going to be ****ed, just hope not many people have put holidays in for april so if its not on the road I can book the month off.

Been and done a bit more today, rolled one rear arch so far bit hard to get at the other side due to the car being at an angle but I'll do that soon.

I attacked one of the wings with some sandpaper, got a bit of it done which took forever so out came the nitromors
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd220/lostboy_014/SDC11018.jpg

got all the old primer and paint off it but still some of the phosphate coat to come off, what a time consuming, painstaking job that is.

I'm considering removing the helper springs out the suspension too
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd220/lostboy_014/SDC11020.jpg

wwmnw

Could try something like this attachment for your wings?

In theory the helper should be fully compressed when the car is on the floor/the weight of the car is on the suspension.

I don't think the helper spring was fully compressed when the car was on the deck before I raised it.

AlexW

Its prob settled, It wont make the ride any different, Just stop the spring being lose when jacked up sometimes. Looking at where the bolt is on the top hole id say its out the wrong way so if you was to set it right, it would make it rub like funk.

A small quick update as I'm about to head out to work.

Done a couple of things recently including priming the wings, rolled one rear arch so far and fiber glassed it and have just got a strange, hefty parcel delivered no idea what it is though , any guesses?

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd220/lostboy_014/SDC11044.jpg

Cheers Alex :d I<3u

Just need an exhaust, rear bumper, headlights and rear wheel bearings (could of sworn I bought some a few months ago :wtf: more things vanishing ) then its getting painted and that's pretty much it done, although I fear the pass side rear arch is going to be a bitch as its pretty crusty

AlexW

Hokay, update tiemz, YAY! etc (While secretly I'm planning on laying under the car and letting the jack down as quick as possible lol )

OK enough emo talk, pikchers again :d

So yesterday I removed the helper springs which was a fun job, would have lost a testicle if I was stood at the side of the car while undoing it lol

As I said earlier in the thread I was having trouble with the geometry and the tyre was touching the front shock, after playing about with the track rod end and moving the hub about on the ball joint, then playing with the geometry this is how its currently sitting

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd220/lostboy_014/SDC11052.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd220/lostboy_014/SDC11054.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd220/lostboy_014/SDC11058.jpg

Still quite close hmmm, it may require more messing

I also got the drive shafts fitted which I was quite pleased about and surprised how easily the passenger side one slid in and clicked into place, the colour of them doesn't match the theme I was going for but I'm not complaining as they're one of the last things I needed to get the car drivable (not that it is yet)
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd220/lostboy_014/SDC11046.jpg

And of course, there was more painting to be done, this is where things get bad.

During the week, after working on the beast I put a pretty much full tin of primer under the engine, it sat nicely under the manifold with no reason to fall over but it did, somehow, and spilled its contents out as the lid mustn't have been on properly :cry::cry:

wwmnw
06-03-11, 05:14 PM
It was etch primer too, and my wings had bare metal spots and I had messed up big time on one with THE biggest run ever (it looked like I had poured the primer on, not sprayed it lol) but never the less I managed to scrape enough together to cover the bare spots and also get a bit painting done

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd220/lostboy_014/SDC11045.jpg

Oh it was fun sanding all the runs out of that, I stopped counting the hours after 2 lol

I then got this wing painted up, again a few runs in it but this isn't painted breeze blue, its just a base coat which is similar to breeze blue :)
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd220/lostboy_014/SDC11059.jpg

There was some paint left in the gun so I scratched the primer on the other wing with some 800 grit and fired the load over it, turned out there wasn't enough but it'll do for now
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd220/lostboy_014/SDC11061.jpg

I also got the bonnet sanded down just to pass a little time
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd220/lostboy_014/SDC11060.jpg
