My mate's on a multicar with his parents, it's all above board in his name and pays £105p/m and has been driving for 8 months, his went down after 2 months when his parents got another years NCB,

Try admiral they might be able to do something

He had a 1.28v Corsa and smashed it up, now has a 1.2 16v

Moneysupermarket usually come up with cheaper quotes than confused. Those are ridiculous though, my first year on a 1.4sri was 1400, you shouldn't have to pay more than that really for a 1ltr.

SRimon
06-04-10, 09:23 PM
Christ, it pays to be old.

I guess I have 9 years on you, but I remember paying £1130 on a 1.4 Nova SR at 18.

Jack
06-04-10, 09:37 PM
lol my first years insurance was £600! 11 years ago though :wtf:

You really are going to have to hit the phones and ring round, comparison websites are only for lazy people.

your no claims off the ped dont carry on to car insurance
Some companies may take it into account and give a small discount though.

My first year on a 1.0 Nova was £700. Got my GSi when I was 19 and that was only £700 as well, still paying nearly that on the bloody thing now at 28. Insurance is really harsh, especially in the North West.

Mike
06-04-10, 10:16 PM
Blimey! My SR at 17/18 was £1400 FC. The R5 about £3.5k or £3.8k something like that lol

I get mardy nowadays if insurance is more then £400 a year lol lol

Stuart
06-04-10, 10:51 PM
lol and I think £690 to insure 3 cars FC is too much lol

the job you do can effect the quote you get aswell.i remember some people saying they couldnt get quoted if they were in the motor trade.(even though i though your insurance use to be cheaper)might be worth getting a quote but this time changing the job you do to something like labourer to see if that is whats effecting your premium. definatly take your dad off aswell though if he's in the trade. i found my quotes to be more expensive by a few hundred if i put i was a student instead of my old job as a labourer.

having another person on your insurance can up the premium or bring it down depending on the company. elephant was alot cheaper for me without anyone else listed as a second driver.

also comparison websites are'nt hugely reliable, if you follow the quote up onto the actual site such as norwich union, you'l usually find the quote comes up cheaper if youd just got a quote straight from them. e.g a few times ive clicked on to the quote information screen, selected 3rd party instead, then clicked back to fully comp and the price comes up cheaper than before which was given to me by the comparison site.

Probably from offering cheap insurance to young drivers lol

They won't disappear entirely anyway, its likely they'll get sold off to another company/bank/rival.

juat for being a civil servant my quotes dropped on aveerage £600 from being a machanic. dave, i'd sell both and buy a 1.0 12v corsa, group 1 insurance. then tell em its worth £10. and agree a higher excess if you can. failing that lot, move.

Andy
08-04-10, 04:56 PM
I got told by an insurer before that the less value your car is worth, the higher the premium as they reckon "you dont give a toss about it so wont be arsed about crashing and where you park it etc" They told me that in those exact words!!! I forget who it was now lol

Think what im going to have to do, whic i really dont want to do, is "sell" my Corsa to my Dad, wait for the logbook to come through in his name, get him to buy insurance for it as him as the named driver, and then me for occasional use :(

Hopefully bring it WAY down, but we'll wait and see......

It will give you a cheaper premium, by how much? depends on the insurer and some insurer's account for this and load the policy premium the minute a young driver is added, especially if there are more than two cars in the family.

If the insurance company find out that you are the main user (fronting the policy) then they have the right to void your policy. Just a heads up if you do go ahead with your plans.

Can't remember what I was for my 1st year Dave but I'm with Admiral or Direct Line (Can't really remember)

Nova 1.2i, garaged every night, NO mods, TPFT, 1 years NCB, my policy with my Dad as the named driver and it worked out about £700

Insurace fraud? Nice one:thumb:

No-no claims

You always have to pay with cash when you fill up

You will get pulled 24/7 like the kids round here do

AlexW
09-04-10, 05:59 PM
^TBH tho how else is he going to be able to insure his car?!

Some companies will do NCB for the named driver and i fail to see how being pulled is going to affect him, whats to say that one time hes pulled over is the one night a week he uses the car?

Benn
09-04-10, 06:37 PM
I've said it loads of times, your first car needs to be old and sh*t with a small engine, that keeps the price down. Pay your money, don't drive like a dick and you'll build up NCB and your price will come down.

Its how the rest of us have done it. I know i did, My first one was £350 for 6months with a discount on the next years which was then £800, but i came out with 2 NCBes, Its been getting cheaper since.
My car was insured for the year it was in the bodyshop, as it gave me another years no clamies.

With out building up NCB you wont get any where at all. So not being the named drive means you'll get all these probs next year too.

Dave.
09-04-10, 07:41 PM
Insurace fraud? Nice one:thumb:

Actually not

I will sell the Corsa to my dad, for soemthing stupid like £5, the car will then become his, he will register it in his name, and then hell elt me use his Corsa for occasional use :p

Its only fraud if its actually registered to me, as then i should be the named driver

Benn
09-04-10, 07:45 PM
You wont build up NCBes tho so you'll always be in this boat...

AlexW
09-04-10, 07:54 PM
^No, 18 year old with a years driving experience wont pay as much as a 17 year old, with the same 0NCB.

Benn
09-04-10, 08:43 PM
No from what i found.

My dads been driving for 30+ years, he tried to get a quote on my Nova years ago. But cause he has no ncb cause he's got a company car.. The quote was the was him as it was for me.

I've never heard that "driving experience" means funk all.

Jack
09-04-10, 09:16 PM
Really? I looked for quotes a few years back for standard novas with 0NCB (as a second car to the Celica) - 1.2's were coming out around the £250-300 mark. Show me a 17 year old who can get a 1.2 in their name at £250 lol

Adam
10-04-10, 10:03 AM
Age does make a big difference, especially once you reach 21.

But just not as much difference as ncb does

16-04-10, 01:52 AM
best thing to do is just get your old man to insure it and have you as a name'd driver. but god help you if you crash and he lose's his NCB lol. or do what a mate of mine did get a zafira big family car cheaper insurance then. get a toyota sapce wagoon thing and you might get a few pennys knocked of them price's

just want to make it clear not say ing buy a toyota space wagoon thingy as i love vauxhalls to much and tbh my mate did look a bit of a pillock when he drove around in it lol. got to admit was funny

if you had £777.56 a month to throw away on insurance why would you get a 3.0 omega. i did a quote on a ferrari 23years old 3years NCB and that would of cost me £6800 a year. damn if i had that much money to throw away each month i would buy a house or a very nice car to live in :P
