View Full Version : Abandoned house in road

...not IN the road obviously. That would be dumb. lol

So up the road where my parents reside is a house which clearly the owner doesn't use/live in/rent whatever. Its been pretty dilapidated for at LEAST 15 years; for about 10 years the owner hasn't lived in it, and hasn't even visited the house for 2+ years.

The front garden is overrun with gorse and other crap (I'm told the back is worse), the neighbours next to it said when they used to be able to see through the scraggy windows, they could see the ceilings were hanging down. The wooden window frames are rotten, some are missing panes of glass, the odd tile is missing off the roof etc. I'm told the guy gave up using the house after the gas/electricity/water etc were cut off.

My question is, as the guy clearly has no interest in the house - as said, he hasn't even visited the property for about 2 years, if not longer, can the council do a compulsory purchase and/or force him to sell to someone? Or renovate the house to a decent standard? As at the moment its basically looking like the walls will start to crumble if they're left much longer.

I've tried googling and CPO's are only spoken of in the context of building new properties, roads etc.

Yes they can, not sure exactly how but the same thing happened to a house a few doors down from me, only difference is that he lived there but was a drunk and had about twenty dogs, he allowed them to do thier business anywhere all over the house and for all of my childhood we referred to the house as 'the dump' then a few years back the council kicked him out and redid all of the floors and windows and made it structurally good, then sold it cheap in need of decorating/fitting out!

if the bloke owns the house or is paying a morgage they cant kick him out as its nothing to do with the council / housing assocation.

Yeah, its privately owned. Annoying, as the house is probably worth about £75k in its current state, if that... refurbed it would be worth a good £200k like the rest of them!

Its also a hell of an eyesore, and seems pointless the guy owning it and abandoning it like that.

track him down and make him an offer :) or start a new mobile phone contract with the address of the abandoned property and wait how ever many years for squatters rights lol

There is massive house built by my old house 500k build with pool inside etc, real nice stone building but the guy who owned/built it died on his farm just befor it was completed. His 2 sons now own it but has never been touched since fathers death 10 or more years ago. Seems a waste

jack there is similar situation in bridge of allan, where the house is derlect the garden hedges have grown over the footpath etc and the council say they cant do anything about it as its private property, if they receive complaints about the hedges they can only trim around the property boundry, the only course of action the nieghbours have is a civil law suit against the owner but nobody has bothered, house prices up there are in the region of £650,000, it really boils my piss to see good houses go to waste.

Right i had my info a little out but it still applies to a degree, the house was privately owned but it was given to the owners brother after he moved to australia, the brother then let it go to rack and ruin and hence it being in the state it was in.

There was the option of a CPO, or a grant to allow the necessary repairs to be carried out, this was found to be the cheaper option in the long run, aslong as the resident/owner stayed in situ for X number of months or years after the repairs were completed, it is possible but it will be a massively long and drawn out process which will be hampered by the fact you need contact with the owner, (who in this case wanted nothing to do with the house or brother) and if he has gone to ground for whatever reason then youre stuck!

theres a house 4 doors away from me, belongs to a trampish family, front garden overgrown same as the back garden, windows are pretty much black, dog crap all in the house etc, and they got given a eviction notice and was offered to move into another house where they would be inspected etc, they got given 6 months to clean the house to standards that the council was happy with, which they still havnt done. so now the council are cleaning the whole place and getting it up to standards themselfs so that the new family can move in.

Can I keep a car on the drive?

Jack

Sure, the owner wouldn't notice. You might have to attack the driveway with a chainsaw to clear some of the brambles first though!

Perfect squatting opportunity lol. IIRC you can claim ownership if you doss down for two years?

LOL

Just realised the house next to it is for rent (the adjoining house) on rightmove, here (http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-24943588.html)

Great photo skillz - they used the hedge in the front garden of the "good" house to hide the "crap" house:

Hmmm, not a bad looking house. I would like to rental this place pls sir!

tbh jack, a couple of days with a strimmer & a mini digger would have that looking pretty good, especially if done in late september to give the crap long enough to dry out for bonfire night.. then add 1x straw bale, 5gallons of red diesel, & 8 old car tyres just to get rid of them like, and the loonaque on hand for refreshments..............put mike on fireworks cos he's a dangerous sort of person & we have a new png event

Thats been done once already - many moons ago when the guy still lived there, the people in the adjoining house waited for him to go out to work one morning, then set about the place and cleared the entire front garden and half the driveway.

The guy came back from work at 5pm, didn't even bat an eyelid at his garden which had all but disappeared!

you could get about tens cars in the drive lol after the clearing.

jack, what you need to do is go & deposit a few barrows of earth in a row about 6' long & 2' wide on the lawn, then get some fake blood & spill it thru the letter box so it comes out under the door, then call the police from a phone box in your best concerned neighbour voice..... that'll stir them up a bit....
