Have a look at my project (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=117223)
2 options, Megajolt or distibutor.
Search for a 1.6 8v conversion by "Prey" his uses the megajot set-up.

yup as chimp said ive just sold my due to poor mpg
basically you need
carbs jetted to suit a xe
inlet manifold
more than likely an alt lowering bracket
ignition - megajolt or simple dizzy kit (dizzy, coil, amplifier) like i used
choke cable
throttle cable - you will have to get one made more than likely
fuel pump - i used a low pressure r1 pump and didnt need a fpr
and away you go

Poor excuse!!
I drove mine around a couple of weekends back, and i averaged 33mpg :) I offset it against my MK4 Golf GTTDI that does 60mpg :d
Agreed, they cant have been set up properly imo.
My mates Xe on R1 carbs is pretty decent on fuel.

I was driving sensibley on the motorway, but was giving it a blast every now and then to keep my sanity. Granted they're not as good as injection, but far more fun and better throttle response!

You don't need to lower the alternator
You can modify your own throttle cable, use a solderless nipple at the pedal or carbs.
