What is the main difference between the f18 and f20 gearbox, and would there be much difference between them on a redtop, Thanks in advance Matt :thumb:

Theres two f18's mate ones a cable driven clutch others a hydraulic the cabl being a diesel box and the other being the later vectra petrol box. The earlier box is a long ratio box so is a good strong choice on an XE IMO. The f20 is the normal box obviously fo an XE so is made for the engine the f20 probabilly has a higher final gear ratio allowing a higer top speed but no definatly sure.

correct on 2 variations of F18s

first was cable clutch and was in cavalier and a decent box

the later was fitted to the vectra and had a hydraulic clutch set up and was most likely made of CHOCOLATE

i worked in a salvage yard for 7 yrs and we quoted on so many of these up an down the country and probabaly sold 3 - 4 per week between 2002 and 2004, then probably 1 a week

My bro has the F18 on his Mk3 Eco SRi, tis a decent box and acceleration is pretty good and works well with the engine. So far we've had no issues with the box.

With the F20 there are 3 variations IIRC the normal one the W5a and W5b. The 'b' has the longest 5th gear ratio, the 'a' with a slightly less longer 5th ratio and the 'normal' box with the lowest 5th gear ratio. The gears 1-4 are exactly the same with all the boxes.

f18's grenade if you ook at em wrong, f20's dont. also daewoo used a cable clutch f18 upto 2000 iirc.

would a older type f18 fit with all the f20's fittings ie. shafts, selector and mounts?

Yes.

I wouldnt listen to any of this F20 is stronger stuff though. All F20's came on XE's & will have been truly ragged by now. Plus I very much doubt an F18 can only handle 180lb/ft & the F20 200 etc. They are the same strength wise. Maybe the earlier F18's were better, I've never heard of that but being Vauxhall, everything was kinda going downhill circa year 2000.

380bhp nova turbo down the road on a standard f18.

They can't be that bad lol

f18's and f20's both take the strain of a tuned v6 very well.
both good boxes, early f18 is closer ratio i do beleive. but i could well be wrong.
there is a chart going around somewhere with ratios on etc
f16's are also a good choice :)

Serious? Woah!

If F20's weren't ragged all the time/gear changes made properly then they'd be strong boxes. But as Craig said a lot of them have had a rough time.

It's like people who turbo the 20NE, they use the F16cr/wr and I'm sure the extra torque would blow them to pieces if the whole 16x10= max torque figures were gospel.
