Not a nova i know but thought some of you may be interested in my E36 Trailer im building. My 328 sport blew its headgasket so i decided to brake it and keep the rear to build a trailor.

Ill update as work progress, heres some pics of the build so far.

Yep, unfortunatly. Once the hesdgasket goes on the 328, the engine is scrap. They have ally blocks, which screw up after over heating.

Already made my money back breaking it.

looks quality Twag,
such a shame about the 328's having alloys blocks
and just a simple gasket meaning the difference
between life and death for the car lol

If you put the rear seats in and seatbelts, would it be legal to have passangers in that while driving??
Nice project,

Cheers for the comments!

Definatly won't be carrying any passengers, I was going to put the seats in just to take some funny pictures but I've sold the interior now and cut all the brackets out now.

Hopefully going to have all the front frAme work finished by tomorrow. Then the front plate will be welded up.

TWAG

Car trailers are the way forward!

To be honest it been quite a easy build so far, dont get me wrong its a lot of work but the way ive done means we havnt come across to many problems.

The annoying thing is the most amount of money ive spent is the 7 litle botles of argon. So ive dug out the arc welder to finish the frame work off and ill be getting a contract with BOC so i can use the 160 amp snap on migwelder ive got.

i love the look of a car towing a trailer thats the same as the car towing it, if you catch my drift,

love this Plymouth prowler

well finally there's been some more progress. we've ditched the mig welding as its costing a fortune, instead we've staring using the arc welder. Its proved alot better, the welds are penetrating so much better.

This ment we could weld in the final centre tow bar and the digonals.

Couple of updates copied from e36coupe.com

Long time no update so here it goes.
Been doing bits here and there over the past week. The front is now 90% welded, the last few bits are being done tomorrow morning.
Things are all looking a litle messy at the moment, but once all the welding is done it will all be cleaned up and painted

Made a start on the c pillars, i started by filling them with expanding foam. The foam was cut back and sanded to the required shap, Then this morning i put the first 2layers of fibreglass on.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/trailer/SDC10217.jpg

Finally, i picked up a gas bottle box today, i know i looks pretty manc but it will be cleaned up, painted and trimmed to fit the trailer.

Todays work -

Welded in some angle to cap the top of the doors off and finished all the other welded.

Spent a bit of time grinding then slaped on some zinc 182 primer, needs a second coat.

Jocky wheel refitted and i done a bit more fibre glass work on the c pillars. Progress is now going to be painfully slow as im starting work on a plant shutdown at work. 10hours days 6 days a week

Next weekend should hopefully see its first run on the road. unfortunatly it wont be behind my bmw as i still havnt sorted the towbar out but atleast it will give me a chance to get to a bodyshop for some quotes

Ha that looks ace!!

Twag, you say about your welder eating bottle of gas ricky tick? You checked the regulator isnt faulty? Its just Me an Lee have only used 3 maybe 4 minature bottles of gas on the Loon to date! Makes me think your welders regulator seal might have gone or something.

TWAG
04-04-10, 09:02 AM
Well thats whats we thought, so we bought another regulator which made no difference. We even tryed another welder incase the welder had a leak.

To be honest i should of got the contract at the start. It only cost £50 for the big bottle of argon and £8 a month rental. Its a 160 snap on welder and is so much better than the litle 90amp set we where using.

Hmm thats a wierd one then??

Me & Lee are using my little 100amp Clarke thing (got it for a steal off eBay) an half a bottle of C02 lasted us 2 entire weekends of welding

TWAG

Co2 will last longer than argo, the small bottles of argon only hold 60 litres.

Hi gents, poped down the workshop after work for a couple of hours.
Spent over an hour grinding back all the welds, then trimed the front panel back so there nice and flush with the doors. Cleaned all the metal back and slaped on some more zinc paint. Things are coming on well now and ill be starting to filler and paint the front panel soon. next weekend should see the first testdrive i hope.

Well its been along time coming but today the trailer finally had its first test run..............

Thankfully it was a success! It towed really well so im well chuffed!

Unfortunatly the rear lights didnt turn up so i had to fit a lightboard for now. With the test run out the way, ill be cracking on with the painting and fitting all the trims etc.

Heres a couple of pics, obviously its far from looking its best at the mo.

i sure did get some funny looks lol.

Managed to get down the workshop for a bit tonight. Decided to make a start on the bodywork, i couldnt decide weather to pay someone to do it all get on with it myself. Ive had a few bad experiences with bodyshop recently so made the dissision just to get on with it.

After a couple of hours sanding, filling, sanding filling etc i managed to get some primer on, needs a litle more work but im happy so far.

Havnt updated for a while due to be very busy at work :(

I finally painted the trailer with cans, didnt come out all that well to behonest. The finish is good and still needs to be flated back, but the colour match isnt amazing so you can see where i blended it in on the doors. When i get back from my trip to france ill have it painted.

Fitted the M3 wheels on to my 328 at the weekend as well, they look far better than the alpina reps.

Better airflow back there, it wouldn't do as much if it was on the back of the car.

A second set of late spec lights wouldn't go a miss, looks really good, any chance you'll divulge what the cover cost?

TWAG
15-05-10, 08:45 PM
Lights will be changed in the near future. The cover cost £180.

Cheers for all the nice comments, i never thought id actually finish it to be honest. Ive previously attempted to make trailers out of a nova and a mk2 golf but boh times just gave up due to lack of time.

It's been a bit of a learing curb due to all the welding, but ive really enjoyed it. After the fishing trip, im going to crack on with the inside which will be nicely carpeted out.

Well ive just got back from my 700 mile round to france and the trailer was spot on, it averaged 80mph through 300km of bliss french motorway.

Had a great week fishing and for anyone who's into fishing, me and the missus caught 21 carp. The missus toped the week with a 54lb mirror carp and i managed a 46lb grass carp

Car and trailer looking a bit sorry for its self, but as you can see with the trailer loaded they both sit very level, Result!
