hey all, have got a friend that wants to sell a pair of 285 deg cams for an XE. he doesnt know how much there worth and im considering buying them off him.

only problem is, is that theyve been sat around for a while and have got a fair bit of surface rust on them. will they clean up ok to be re-used again? also what do you reckon i should offer for them?

thanks for any help.

Depends how rusty they are. If its light you should get away with some very fine wet/dry and some oil to clean them up.

Whats your engine spec btw? Will need pocketed pistons iirc

well i doubt id be using them as yet, id just hold onto them incase i ever need them as im sure i can get them cheap.

the engine they came out of didnt have pocketed pistons...

might need uprated springs tho.

pocketed pistons would be recomended if not you have to retard the timing so you dont bend valves iirc

I thought they are fine on the standard verniers, but if you run aftermarket ones you can't use them in the advanced position?

Srs-1 had 285 pipers in his xe

you mean std pulleys! you can use them with standard pistons but pocketed would be better.

i fail to see why he needs pocketed pistons.

there is nothing metioned about lift etc, so how would you know it needs different pistons?

i'n running 280 schrick cams witk stock pistons, stock head, stock pully's.

because the longer the valve open the less time it is closed before the piston comes up, pocketed pistons will give you the extra cleareance. also most cams above 288 will have a little more lift.

Yeh but if the timing is left the same they should be ok due to being less than 288, any more than that and they have a chance of touching. However i personally wouldnt take the chance....:thumb:
