I have an F20 box and ever since i have done the conversion on the nova it has whined like a fcuker Lol. It only happens when the clutch is in, today i thought i may aswell do something about it so i put 3/4l gearbox oil in and although it sounds slightly quieter the whine is still there. How do you know how much oil there is in the box and how much are you meant to put in?
If the gearbox is fcuked would it just whine whilst the clutch is in or does it do it whilst driving aswell?

When the clutch is in is more like a release bearing isnt it? should be a plug on the side of the box near the drive shaft on the short shaft side and they hold 1.8L of 80w :)

I thought the bearing would make more of a rattle sound? My guess is that it would of been completely empty of oil so i might get another litre and whack it in lol
Mine used to moan with the clutch out and was a screwed g/box :(
Moaning with the clutch in is the release bearing...iirc correct they hold 1.9l
whining with the clutch OUT is the release bearing, whining with it in is the input shaft bearing
And its 1.8l of ATF

Cheers for the advice. I may aswell just put more oil in just to rule that out.I may just buy another box that i know that works.
Just one of many problems lol
its actually 1.8l of sae 80w-90, atf is not designed for use with gears, whereas sae 80w-90 is.....
Ive put ATF in literally hundreds of Vaux and VW boxes for customers and never had any problems

whats the point? what you spend in oil could be spent on a box:confused:

i'm glad i'm not the only one..
atf is basically a hydraulic oil, and is thin at all temperatures
sae 80w90 is thick at low temperatures because that is what is needed when the gears are cold to lubricate & take up any slop in the gears. when the gears warm up, the tolerances get closer, and the oil gets thinner to suit.
if a gearbox is 20 years old & has wear in it, then it will make noises, mostly because the inner bearings are worn out, they can be replaced quite easily
ATF=Automatic Transmission Fluid, the clue is in the title really,
When i foned vaux up thay said ATF was standard fitment oil in all the older boxes  and everybox ive ever drained on a vaux has had ATF in it!
who did you call?
if it was some numpty at a dealership, it doesn't count....vauxhall technical wouldn't advise it either...unless they were looking up an automatic gearbox.
