After years of getting really wicked off with sitting behind a desk pushing pens around etc etc i've finally got my act in gear and have managed to get a BMW Technician Apprenticeship starting the 8th of next month at the BMW dealer i'm currently working at the minute :d Too say i'm excited is an understatement, my 3 series coupe did have to go though due to money and i'm not saying what i replaced it with even though some members on here that know what it is i'm sure will make it known haha

Well done matey, But your not a garage monkey...

You will get well pissed off with it, saying that... The BMW garages are cleaner than most offices ive ever worked in lol :P

Its always nice to learn something new, just don't get stressed your on a lower wage etc blah blah.

What are you doing over the 2 years andy?

Seems very short to go from an office monkey, to swinging the spanners.

You got previous mechanical qualifications etc?

Pay isnt bad really, just be careful with the pennies etc

Over the two years you do 28 weeks training per year at the BMW academy in Reading and 20 weeks in the dealership with a technician mentor, after the two years i'll be qualified upto NVQ level 3 and ATA accredited, then from that level i can move up the next steps to becoming a senior tech etc etc!

Nice one.

If you get a chance, specialise in electronics IMO. I'm sure you dont need telling that moderns cars are so electrical, but many tech's shy away from it due the technical issues. But you can choose stripping dashbords over oil changes..

Definitely, you will open a hell of a lot more opportunities for yourself in the future if you get specialised in electrics on cars.

Your change in direction was a good call fella.... Some of the senior and master techs are on a hell of a wage at my spot. Obviously it will take some time to get there but well worth it imo. All the best with it.

Nick.

Good for you mate it will be worth it. I also took a big step 18months ago I was working as a plant opperator for a big company in north Wales, working long hours making good money. A oppertunity came up to work with the highways department with the local authority with I aplyied and got. I took a cut in pay from 27k to 11k lol. I have since had a payrise to 15k and they pay for me to do a foundation degree in civil engineering following on to do a degree in civil engineering. But I am much happier, have more time for my self and I will get a good pention at the end of it when I retier at 65. So I wish you all the best and it will pay off in the end.
