Not a fan, never ever will be a fan.

Imo, it goes against everything a true car enthusiast should want, i mean we spend shed loads on rustproofing and changing panels, hell look at all the people who go to Duick when he comes over to buy gen panels to keep their cars as mint and rust free as possible, so why the hell should we want to encourage it to rot and rust?

And to my understanding, true rat is a barn find, left exactly as it is, with only the brakes and running gear replaced or serviced, so if you make your car rat then in my understanding youre doing it wrong?

This is only what i understand of it, ive never looked into it fully as it pains me to see what in my eyes is a perfectly good car made to look crap or even ruined!

And can we please take note this is not a place for people to slag either trend off, be it rat 'haters' as the guys on ratlook have so kindly branded those who dont agree with it, nor the the shiny 'haters' (to use that term again) ive seen the thread Liam linked from ratlook and saw some very childish comments from most of the members, but on the flip side i also saw a lot of childish comments by a lot of people on here in Kaylls thread aswell so were all to blame, but lets not let this one go off topic and start a massive argument between the sites, it will be removed if this is the case!

Let something slip into rat and its kinda cool(ish)...

IMO, rat look is spending all your money on engine/performance, possibly wheels, and either not bothering or not having time/money to spend on the looks of the car. Hence them looking tatty, or "ratty". Sure, it needs to be solid, but its very much a make do and mend style of repair.

The modern fad seems to go against that ^ as people are spending time and effort to purposefully make newer cars look old and tatty, and in most cases the engine and performance isn't all that great.

I guess my car falls into some form of rat category? It has all the money spent on the functional things, performance (210bhp is plenty for the moment :d) etc, and repairs are just done to a standard to work. I wouldn't refer to it as rat though, I'm just lazy. lol

Ahhh I dunno. I suppose I just "don't get it".

Mattman
19-03-10, 11:09 AM
Don't get it? especially the current 'modern' rat scene. Would rather a nice polished, clean, unrusted motor myself. But as most have said each to their own. I just wouldn't IMO ruin a perfectly good car.

Angus Closier
19-03-10, 11:11 AM
I can see if somthing is found in that state (barn find/origional etc) but forcing your car to be somthing most people hate at mot time? Iv never been a fan of rust and would never want a RAT car.....I feel its just a scene thats easy to do and you dont have to show any sort of tallent or skill.

When I hear 'Rat' this is what immediately comes to my mind.

http://photos.cokertire.com/data/503/1939-rat-rod-pickup.jpg
http://images.thecarconnection.com/med/1932-ford-rat-rod_100170259_m.jpg

These are cars from the 30's, 40's and 50's (normally). Like it was said, the above cars bodywork is 'as is' no mods done no paint just how it was and cars like this are no show but all go.

However, at the end of the day, people have their own tastes and ideas and opinions. If people choose to go for an artificial/replicated rat look (as from what I've seen sometimes it's perfectly clean cars made to look tatty) then that's down to them, each to their own.

That is all.

Everything looks better with a paint job. No question.

'Natural' rats can be respected a bit though, usually it's some 40+ year old vehicle that has led a varied life etc.

Bulk ordering 'retro' stickers from eBay and setting about the bonnet of your 12 dr sh!t box with the wet n dry is nothing short of pathetic. Then rake through the AdTrader for a used Paddy Hopkirk, coil a rusty chain around it, add a sh!t BMX fit for the tip and a Porsche Cookie Cutter that won't fit you cars PCD and you really are the king of cool...

If you're gonna follow a trend how's about following one that doesn't make you look like a t!t and ruin cars (some good) in the process?

LMAO @ all of the new terminology too. I prefer tw4t rat. You know who you are. lol

all valid comments. i personally like rat, no matter what it be, simply because its different, to an extent. now, if someone on here dragged an A reg merit out of a scrappy after 10 years sitting, got it mot'd and taxed then kudos, a true rat nova.
i shall have to dig up some pics i have from the summernats hot rod meet, of some true ratters....

keep it coming guys. i do think its safe to say, its here to stay mind...

I don't think it is any more. Ok its not massive, but then thats because its only a minority of people who are.... willing to do this to their cars. But then, what I would consider to be concours cars (Nick J, Keith Robinson, Benn etc) aren't all that common either.

L14MNP
19-03-10, 12:33 PM
Every style and trend no matter how played out will always remain to a degree now IMO thanks to the internet keeping various like minded enthusiasts together.

However, most modern 'ratters' are just sheep, so they will move on to the next 'cool' thing as soon as Fast Car gives them the green light.

Prove me wrong. :d

I like cars that are inbetween, not mint but not forced ratted.

I hate it when you see some cars stored in garages looking like they left the factory, because it clearly shows its not used and is more of an orniment.

But on the other hand I don't think the rat look is anything new. I used to drive around sheds when I first passed my test as I'm sure most of us did.

At the end of the day its only a nova, if it was a mk2 escort then the shotgun would be coming out lol

Nova_Tek
19-03-10, 12:45 PM
I think what people are tryna say is that this type of look isn't true rat as it's forced (taking a good car and making it look knackered) where as the proper rat look is cars found in that state, and just big V8's strapped to them so they're quick.

Sloth
19-03-10, 12:49 PM

I don't either, but then I never was a great fan of any Fords. Bar the Mustang, and I don't even like those all that much lol

My first car was a shed, but a polished shed that was in good nick lol

I see what you mean though. Although I didn't ever see people purposefully attacking their cars with sandpaper!

The cynic in me wants to think its because they are too lazy to clean up a tatty looking car. Example, baxter has patched up the rusty bits on his 5dr; instead of putting in the effort there to fix it and look good he could have just rubbed half the car down with a grinder and left it.

Ermmm an impressive motorsport pedigree, respected by some of the best in the business, 40 odd years of aftermarket parts developemnt (inc mk1) and a heavy dose of OSF tax, not to mention them looking awesome. They can (easily) be made to own. No-one sane can doubt that.

i understand that, but surely its easier and cheaper to go faster in a cossie for example? i'll bet my rusty drawers that if you put an xe nova and a pinto'd mk2 against each other the nova would abuse it like a ho.:)

Daytime MOT? lol 99% of MOTs will be done before 5pm, does this mean none of them need working bulbs?

you can 'only' get a daylight mot if the lights are removed from the vehicle. Technically them being painted over isnt enough.
It MUST have working and visible indicators.
MUST have reflectors
Dont need stop lamps if the front AND rear position light units are missing.

so in short that corsa has no chance of an MOT unless he only fits indicators and strips the lights off.

Sloth, that pickup SHOULD technically have an SVA as it should be Q-plated. But then, so should 75% of the cars on here lol

See i want to know.

When did Rat look for from some rusty bits on a golf.. To a corsa that is just sh*t. That's been painted badly with can/brush or fingers and crap stuck all over it? The bath room mirrors? The random other make badges stuck on it and stuff?

That's not rat look, its just 10 pounds of sh*t in a 5pound bucket.
