I getting rid of the Golf this weekend, and my plan is to go for a BMW 328i sport.

Seem quite readily available, and ALOT of car for the money.

I am aware of the pre 98 engines etc and the balljoint/lower arm issues.

Any other useful info would be greatly appreciated!

(I saw one for sale on here recently . . . . )

**SHAMELESS PLUG**

Buy mine! It's not a sport (no LSD and not got the black headlining) but is a full M3 rep

there a lovely car and a good torqi engine, but they do give a lot of trouble, i had one before and headgasket went, they are very prone to this, they like to crack heads also, expansion bottles often crack, bushings in the back also give trouble, abs units too, unless you can get a real good clean example i wouldnt go for one

I'd have 1 as a next car but don't they drink fuel for fun!

My Golf is returning 16mpg extra urban at the moment, so it cant be any worse!

Regularly see over 30mpg on mine, calculated from mileage and gallons consumed.

I've had one.

Loved it! No real problems, ABS tripped out, costing £££ to replace.

As for LSD.

It was only ever an option, however most of the earlier 95/6/7 ones had them.

The later ones had ASC as standard, but again a LSD was an option.

Not bad on fuel, I also saw regulary over 30mpg

I have a 328 and a 325 (sadly no lsd though as its a cab and not the sport)..

Like i have said loads of times, so much car for the money and are such a nice car imo in all areas.

Re the guy who said about headgaskets/etc. He is right, the 2.8s are very well known for overheating, i have seen so many examples of this and even my old 2.8 fcuked up. Just be extra careful whilst buying and double check the system.

Do not expect decent mpg. My coupe drinks alot but i think i need a new lambda as it is really bad lol

The prices vary so much, my advice will be to pay the money for a mint shell. My two 36s are very solid and am so glad they arnt like some rust buckets iv seen.

Nickasil lining(Premature bore wear) due to our fuel over here. Try and get one which has had an engine replacement by a dealer or a low mileage example may not have been affected. If its not gone now its prob not likely to.
Overheating
Ball joints, dead easy to replace
Rear radius arm bushes go
Rear brake pipes corrode
Auto aircon control panel fook up
Alarms fook up and are a nightmare if they fail when armed
Ignition barrels/locks fall apart
Window regulator mounts break, again easy to replace
ABS faults
The list goes on plus other wear & tear items you would usually find on an old car.

if your 2.8 alloy block dies, find a 2.5 m50 iron block and put all the 2.8 internals into it. uber bulletproof 2.8 = win!

AFAIK the overheating is only an issue if the plastic pump impeller has never been changed for a more reliable metal one

ive got a 1996 328 sport at the sec its a great car goes well handles well ive had non of the above problems and a few of my mates have had sports to and never had problems and you get the good bmw build quality and you can get around 30mpg

Sloth

yeah the impellor causes it, the issues is if you over heat it, the alloy block softens, so when you try to re-torque the head blots it rips the threads out.
hence the "fix" i said about. toby unna in ppc is doing this atm to a 328 coupe.

yeah somtimes when the headgasket goes when your taking the headbolts up the threads come with them, a lot of fellas just put engines in them when the head goes as it near cheaper, there a bitch to do a head on, not as much the head but the vanos is very tricky to time especially without the proper tools,
i also had the problem with the aircon panel, dear to replace also,
as for mpg, its different for everybody i reckon, if you drive it handy it shouldnt be too bad but there is a lot of power in them and hard to resist planting the boot down all the time

I brought a 328i sport a few months ago, unfortunatly last month a encountered the dreaded head gasket failure.

This is how it looked just before it blew.

And this is how it looks now :-)

Lucky they break really well. ive already made £1200 back (payed £1400 for the car) and ive kept the m3 mirrors, bumpers, sideskirts and wheels. All these bits will be going on my new 328i se. Pic below.

My advice is to take your time buying one, if you get a good one then you will be more than happy with it. I really enjoy driving mine, power and comfort all rolled into one. Im averaging 27mpg which i think is pretty good.
